Its standout Purification and Corruption system makes each turn a balancing act between harming enemies, restoring health and risking damage to yourself. The trade-off is a learning curve and some early-run volatility that may frustrate players who prefer steadier progress.
What kind of game is Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles?
Developed by Little Leo Games and published by Akupara Games, Astrea is a single-player, run-based roguelike released on Steam on September 21, 2023. Instead of building a conventional card deck, you assemble and modify a pool of dice, then make tactical decisions around the faces you might roll. The official Steam description calls it a “DICE-deck-building roguelike” and highlights its dual damage system: Purification versus Corruption.
That change of format is more than a visual swap. A card game presents a hand of known options; a dice pool asks you to weigh likelihood against payoff. Your choices shape the odds, but a roll can still force you to adapt. Steam’s official listing is the source for the game’s release details and feature counts.
How do dice-building and combat work?
Build around consistency or risk
Dice can be safe, balanced or risky. As PC Gamer’s review by Dominic Tarason explains, safer dice provide more consistent, comparatively modest outcomes; riskier ones offer fewer positive faces but can pay off more strongly. Balanced dice sit between those approaches. Choosing what to add or change is therefore a chance-versus-power decision: a dependable pool may reduce bad turns, while a riskier one can create stronger opportunities at the cost of volatility.

Purification and Corruption link offense and survival
Purification can damage enemies or heal you. Corruption can damage you or heal enemies, but it can also activate abilities displayed on your health bar. That makes Corruption a tool you may deliberately accept for an ability—not simply a penalty to avoid. Push too far, however, and the risk of losing health becomes part of the cost. The tension comes from managing these effects together: the action that advances your plan may also help an enemy or leave you more vulnerable.
Oracles and run modifiers create build variety
You choose among oracles with distinct dice and playstyles, then shape a run with support sentinels and blessings. Steam’s listing advertises six oracles, more than 350 dice, 20 upgradeable support sentinels, over 170 modifying blessings, more than 20 random events and 16 difficulty levels. Those are publisher-listed totals, not independently measured counts of equally distinct or useful options; they nevertheless indicate the scale of the systems available.

What do the reviews say about Astrea?
Individual critics have responded positively to the dice-focused combat while noting uneven difficulty. PC Gamer scored the game 80/100. Tarason described it as a refreshing, tense take on deckbuilding, but cautioned that the early game can be capricious. That is a useful distinction: the central system can feel engaging precisely because outcomes are uncertain, yet early volatility may make it harder to settle into a reliable strategy.
Softpedia’s PC review rated it 8.5/10, praising the strategic variety, combat and presentation. Its reservations included difficulty spikes, limited innovation in the broader roguelite structure and a grind to unlock all heroes. Softpedia disclosed that it received a review key from the publisher. These scores and criticisms are separate editorial judgments, not a guarantee of how any particular player will respond.

Is Astrea difficult?
Expect to learn several interacting systems: dice probabilities, the consequences of Purification and Corruption, oracle-specific approaches, and run modifiers. The reviews’ comments about an erratic early game and difficulty spikes suggest that the challenge is not only about making a strong build; it can also involve coping when a roll or encounter disrupts your plan. Players who enjoy adapting to uncertainty may find that tension appealing. If you want predictable turns or a gentle, consistently paced introduction, the learning curve may be a drawback.

Is Astrea like Slay the Spire?
It shares the broad run-based structure and build-making appeal of a deckbuilder, but its combat decisions revolve around dice rather than drawing and playing cards. That shifts the emphasis toward managing odds and accepting controlled risk. If you enjoy adapting a build over successive encounters, the familiar roguelike framework may make sense; if what you value most is a hand of predictable actions, Astrea offers a meaningfully different rhythm.
