Critics value its inviting atmosphere and tactile creation loop, but some find its resource cycles repetitive and its planets short on variety. Whether it is a good fit depends on how much you enjoy open-ended exploration—and whether you want to play solo or with friends.
What the review scores say
In a snapshot retrieved October 7, 2026, Metacritic’s PC overview gives Astroneer a 71/100 Metascore from 17 critic reviews, classified as “Mixed or Average.” Its user score is 7.2/10 from 364 ratings, also classified as “Mixed or Average.” The critic breakdown is 7 positive reviews (41%), 10 mixed (59%), and none negative. These figures are platform-specific, may change, and describe an aggregator rather than a universal verdict. Metacritic’s PC page displays 18 reviews, while the overview explicitly bases its score on 17; those counts are not identical. Metacritic’s Astroneer overview.
Steam’s store snapshot from the same date reports English-language reviews as “Very Positive”: 91% positive from 53,971 reviews. Its separate recent-review summary is also “Very Positive,” with 86% positive from 454 reviews in the last 30 days. These are Steam customer-review summaries, not critic scores. Their audience, platform scope, method, and time window differ from Metacritic’s, so the figures should be read side by side rather than combined or treated as equivalent. Astroneer on Steam.
What critics like about Astroneer
A gentler take on survival
The game’s survival loop is less about constant danger than about exploring, collecting, and making things. Shacknews described it as “generally therapeutic and almost never stressful” in a review dated February 5, 2019. USgamer called it “definitely on the soft side of the survival spectrum” in its February 7, 2019 review. That relaxed tone is a major part of the appeal for players who want to tinker and explore without a relentlessly punishing pace. Metacritic’s review listing.

Colorful worlds and hands-on terrain shaping
Critics also praised the presentation and exploration. The Games Machine called it “a survival space simulator that offers a rich and colourful experience based on some interesting game mechanics” in its February 5, 2019 review. USgamer highlighted the inviting look, colorful landscapes, underground caves, and resource gathering. The official Steam description captures the central hands-on activity: players “dig, collect, shape, build, and color terrain.”
Crafting, building, and cooperative play
Gathered resources feed into a creative progression loop: players make modular bases and crafting stations, then work toward systems such as automation, power plants, resource harvesters, and railway facilities. The attraction is the gradual transformation of a rough outpost into a more capable operation. Multiplayer.it’s February 6, 2019 review praised the mix of crafting, vehicles, exploration, and cooperative play. The Steam listing specifies online co-op for two to four players and also supports solo play. Steam store page.

What reviewers criticize
Resource loops can become repetitive
The central reservation is that the same gather-and-craft rhythm can lose its novelty. Wccftech’s February 11, 2019 review said the basic loop was engaging early on but that repetition eventually hurt the experience. USgamer found that there were not enough interesting discoveries on each planet, while Critical Hit cautioned that players should not expect much variety. If you need frequent new mechanics, distinct objectives, or a strong mission-led structure, the open-ended loop may feel thin.
Controls may take getting used to
Wccftech also noted complicated controls, especially with a gamepad. A Metacritic user comment from March 22, 2026 describes the PC experience as unintuitive, but that is one player’s view, not a broad measure of player opinion. The evidence supports treating control comfort as a possible friction point, not a platform-wide verdict.

Keep launch-era bug complaints in context
GameCritics’ March 5, 2019 review criticized bugs as well as repetition. That is a launch-period assessment; it does not establish that those bugs remain in the current build. The available review evidence is not enough to make a claim about present-day bug frequency or performance.
Is Astroneer worth playing solo or with friends?
Solo play suits someone who enjoys setting personal projects—expanding a base, exploring a cave, or improving a resource setup—without needing a steady stream of explicit objectives. The Steam listing confirms that solo play is supported. Its open-endedness is also the main trade-off: players who find repeated resource gathering tedious may want the structure and shared momentum of co-op.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Online co-op on the cited Steam listing supports two to four players. Friends can make exploration and construction feel more collaborative, but co-op does not remove the underlying crafting and resource cycles. It is best viewed as a way to share the sandbox, not as a fix for limited variety.
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Good fit: players who want a colorful, relaxed sandbox focused on exploration, terrain manipulation, crafting, and base building.
- Potentially frustrating: players who need frequent surprises, a highly structured campaign, or a survival game built around constant pressure.
- Try co-op if: you like building and exploring with others and can play with one to three friends online on a supported listing.
- Consider controls before committing: gamepad complexity has been noted by a critic, while an individual PC user also reported unintuitive controls; neither establishes that one platform is better.
Platform and score caveats
Metacritic’s retrieved overview lists Astroneer for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5, but the score discussed above is specifically for PC. Equivalent review coverage or current performance across those other platforms is not established by these figures. Steam’s review summary is likewise a Steam storefront measure, not a cross-platform rating. Check the store page for the platform and edition you intend to play; platform support, review aggregates, and availability can change. Metacritic · Steam.
