The ASUS MG279Q is a 27-inch, 2560 × 1440 IPS gaming monitor with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. Its important catch: FreeSync is documented only from 35Hz to 90Hz, and only over DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort. The 144Hz maximum and the narrower variable-refresh range are separate capabilities.
What the MG279Q offers
ASUS introduced the MG279Q in 2015 with a combination that was notable at the time: QHD resolution, IPS-type viewing characteristics and a 144Hz maximum refresh rate. It is best considered as a legacy gaming monitor rather than judged by launch-era comparisons as if they were current.
| Specification | MG279Q detail |
|---|---|
| Screen and resolution | 27 inches; 2560 × 1440 (WQHD), according to ASUS |
| Pixel density | 109 pixels per inch, according to ASUS’s 2015 launch announcement |
| Maximum refresh rate | Up to 144Hz, according to ASUS |
| FreeSync range | 35–90Hz over DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort, according to the monitor manual |
| Response time | 4ms gray-to-gray, an ASUS specification rather than an independently stated measurement |
| Color coverage | 100% sRGB, according to ASUS’s 2015 launch announcement |
| Inputs and USB | DisplayPort 1.2, mini DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI/MHL ports and two USB 3.0 ports, according to ASUS |
| Stand and mounting | Height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustments; quick-release stand and VESA mounting, according to ASUS |
ASUS also advertised 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles and a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. ASUS said the QHD resolution provides up to 77% more on-screen desktop space than standard Full HD; that is a manufacturer comparison, not a guarantee of a particular workflow improvement.
144Hz, FreeSync and the connection you need
144Hz is the maximum refresh rate
The monitor is specified to refresh at up to 144Hz. That figure describes the display’s maximum refresh capability; it does not mean every connection, source device or game will operate at that rate. ASUS notes that compatible video cards are required for 144Hz and FreeSync.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FreeSync is limited to 35–90Hz
The manual specifies a FreeSync variable-refresh window of 35–90Hz. FreeSync therefore does not extend to the monitor’s full 144Hz ceiling. In his August 25, 2015 review, Tom’s Hardware reviewer Christian Eberle praised the screen’s image quality but identified the 90Hz FreeSync limit as a drawback. His assessment was that the limit was not a problem in his use, while wishing the feature reached 144Hz.
DisplayPort is required for the documented FreeSync feature
The manual lists FreeSync support over DisplayPort and mini DisplayPort only. HDMI/MHL is available for connecting a source, but the manual does not specify FreeSync support over those inputs. Before choosing a cable, check the computer or console’s available output and decide whether you need adaptive sync or simply a video signal. For the documented FreeSync path, use DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort, with any cable or adapter matched to the source output and desired resolution and refresh rate.

Image features and ergonomics
The MG279Q includes ASUS GamePlus crosshair and timer overlays, six GameVisual presets, Ultra Low Blue Light filters and flicker-free technology. Its stand supports height adjustment from 0 to 150mm, tilt from +20° to −5°, swivel from +60° to −60° and a 90-degree clockwise pivot, according to ASUS. The stand can be removed using the quick-release design, and the display supports VESA mounting.
How the 2015 review holds up
Christian Eberle’s Tom’s Hardware review, published August 25, 2015, assessed the MG279Q as a high-quality IPS screen, noting strong color accuracy and contrast in the reviewer’s testing. That is a historical review judgment, not a claim about every unit today. Its comparison with the Acer XB270HU—including a roughly $250 price difference at the time—also belongs to that 2015 market context, not to current shopping decisions.

Should you buy one used today?
Whether a particular MG279Q is worth buying depends on its asking price, condition, panel health, warranty and the alternatives currently available. Current stock, prices and warranty terms have not been established here, so the 2015 review and launch positioning cannot settle today’s value question.
