What a performance review can—and cannot—tell you
A benchmark describes one configuration, not every PC. Results depend on the processor and graphics card, desktop or laptop hardware, resolution, graphics settings, and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled. A test on a high-end graphics card at 4K cannot establish how a midrange system will fare at 1080p.
Start with your own setup: identify your CPU, GPU, memory, display resolution, and the graphics preset you are willing to use. Then compare those details with the reviewer’s test conditions. How to judge whether a review applies to your PC
Match hardware and settings
Look for the specific CPU and GPU models, and check whether the test used a desktop or laptop. Compare resolution, graphics preset, and ray tracing settings with what you plan to use. If the review’s settings differ, treat its results as a clue rather than a direct forecast; explain the difference to yourself instead of assuming the FPS will transfer unchanged.

Check rendering features and test conditions
- Upscaling: Note whether DLSS, FSR, or XeSS was used and which quality mode was selected.
- Frame generation: Check whether it was enabled and whether the review reports base game FPS separately from generated FPS.
- Test route: A repeatable built-in benchmark, a controlled gameplay route, and a brief impression are not equally representative. A built-in test may not capture demanding gameplay.
- Build and drivers: Look for the game patch or build date and driver version, when reported. Prefer findings retested after relevant updates.
Look beyond average FPS
An average can conceal occasional long frames that feel like stutter or add input latency. Steam’s in-game performance monitor documentation describes this limitation. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 guide defines 1% low FPS as a measure that reflects stutter; a 1% low closer to the average indicates a more consistent experience.
Use average FPS alongside 1% lows or frame-time information, and read notes about traversal stutter, shader-compilation stutter, crashes, or drops in demanding scenes. There is no universal 1% low that guarantees a game will feel good: your tolerance depends on the game, genre, display, and personal preference.

Keep generated frames separate from base performance
Frame generation can increase the displayed output rate while the game’s underlying rendered rate remains lower. Steam’s monitor can distinguish frame-generation FPS from actual game FPS. When a review gives only a generated total, do not compare it directly with another result’s base FPS; look for base-rate and latency context where available.
Decide whether to buy, wait, or skip

When reviews disagree, compare the reasons
Different results may reflect different test systems, settings, game builds, or gameplay scenes rather than a simple contradiction. Compare the following before deciding which result is more useful:

- Hardware: GPU and CPU, including desktop versus laptop.
- Visual workload: Resolution, preset, ray tracing, and scaling method.
- Rendering rate: Upscaler mode, frame generation, and whether figures are base or generated FPS.
- Consistency: Average FPS alongside 1% lows or frame-time behavior, plus reports of stutter.
- Test validity: Representative gameplay, a repeatable route, or a built-in benchmark.
- Reproducibility: Build and driver context, repeat runs, and agreement among independent reviewers.
- Your threshold: Desired smoothness, genre, tolerance for visual compromises, and how soon you want to play.
Give more weight to independent reviews that disclose their settings and reach similar conclusions on comparable hardware. Treat a strikingly strong or weak result cautiously when the build, scene, or method is unclear. Player reports can add useful detail, but ask what hardware and settings they used before generalizing from them.

Valve’s Steam refund policy generally allows a refund request within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve may consider requests outside those standard conditions, but an exception is not guaranteed. The policy is specific to Steam; other PC storefronts have their own rules, and local rights may affect a transaction. Check the live terms that apply to your purchase.

That window is a limited risk-management option, not a substitute for performance evidence: two hours may not reveal problems that appear later, and a request outside the standard conditions may not be accepted. Do not treat a Steam purchase as a guaranteed free trial.
For Early Access games, Steam describes the product as a work in progress and advises buyers to understand what they are purchasing and buy only if excited to play it in its current state. Its Early Access guidance also confirms that the Steam refund policy applies. Judge the current build on what it delivers rather than on assumed future fixes or optimization.
