What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single best handheld for every player: the right choice depends on which games and ecosystem you want. For Nintendo exclusives and hybrid play, choose Nintendo Switch 2; for a Steam library and flexible PC play, choose Steam Deck OLED; for demanding PC games and Xbox/Game Pass access, consider ROG Xbox Ally X. Analogue Pocket is the cartridge-focused pick for Game Boy-family games, while PlayStation Portal suits PS5 owners who want network-based play on another screen. These are editorial recommendations based on official product features and positioning, not claims of independent hands-on testing.

Choose by game library before comparing hardware
- Want Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, or Nintendo multiplayer? Start with Switch 2. It offers the official Nintendo hybrid-console experience; use Nintendo’s compatibility resource rather than assuming every older Switch game or accessory works identically.
- Want Steam games with a more console-like interface? Start with Steam Deck OLED. It is a small PC, but SteamOS makes its primary library and controls feel more integrated than a desktop PC.
- Want Xbox/Game Pass or other Windows storefronts, especially for demanding PC games? Consider ROG Xbox Ally X. Its Windows flexibility comes with more software upkeep.
- Own original Game Boy-family cartridges? Consider Analogue Pocket. Its central advantage is playing supported cartridges, not replacing a modern console.
- Already own a PS5 and mainly want to play it elsewhere at home? Consider PlayStation Portal if your Wi-Fi is dependable. It is a streaming companion, not a portable PS5.
- Want a low-cost multi-system retro device? Treat budget Android and Linux handhelds as a separate category. Retroid, Anbernic, Miyoo, and Powkiddy devices vary by model in performance, firmware, controls, screen, support, and legal game setup; there is no defensible universal winner without checking current models and prices.
Best handhelds by use case
Nintendo Switch 2: best for Nintendo games and hybrid console play
Switch 2 is the clearest choice if Nintendo’s first-party catalog is the reason you want a handheld. Its built-in handheld-and-docked design, console-focused software, and local multiplayer make it a better fit for Nintendo households than a PC handheld. Nintendo lists a $449.99 U.S. MSRP on its product page; check the page for current availability and bundles.
Compatibility with older Switch games is not something to assume across the board. Nintendo maintains a compatibility resource, and individual games, updates, accessories, or camera requirements can affect the experience. Check a specific title before buying on the expectation that it will work.

Steam Deck OLED: best Steam and PC all-rounder
Steam Deck OLED combines a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED screen with refresh rates up to 90Hz. Valve lists peak brightness at 1,000 nits, a 50Wh battery, and an estimated 3–12 hours of play depending on content. The range is wide because a light indie game and a demanding 3D game make very different demands on the system.
Its strongest point is the relationship between SteamOS and the hardware: the interface is built for gamepad use, controls can be customized, and the system supports suspend and resume. Valve lists full-sized controls, two trackpads, gyro functionality, and four assignable rear buttons. USB-C video output lets it connect to a display, dock, and peripherals.
Steam compatibility is broad, not universal. Valve’s Deck Verified labels provide a useful first check: Verified indicates a game meets Valve’s compatibility expectations; Playable means it runs but may need user adjustments; Unsupported indicates it is not currently considered playable on Deck; and Unknown means it has not received a rating. A rating is a starting point, not a guarantee that every update, launcher, multiplayer mode, or personal setup will behave perfectly. Pay special attention to anti-cheat, third-party launchers, Windows-only components, and controller support.
- Choose it for: A Steam-first library, indie games, older PC titles, custom controls, and flexible retro software.
- Skip it if: You need every Windows launcher or anti-cheat multiplayer game to work without troubleshooting, or your priority is maximum AAA performance.
- Storage: OLED configurations use NVMe SSDs in 512GB or 1TB capacities, and all Steam Deck models support microSD expansion. The operating system and formatting mean advertised capacity is not all available for games. A microSD card is useful for indies and games that tolerate slower storage; check the exact model and warranty before considering an internal SSD replacement.
For current U.S. pricing, use Valve’s Steam Deck store; the accessible product page displayed euro pricing, which should not be converted into a U.S. estimate.

ROG Xbox Ally X: best for Windows storefront access and demanding PC games
ASUS positions the ROG Xbox Ally X as a Windows 11 handheld with Xbox full-screen functionality, broad PC storefront access, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme hardware, and an 80Wh battery. Its 7-inch 1080p touchscreen supports up to 120Hz and FreeSync Premium. That combination gives it more headroom for demanding PC games than a device chosen primarily for a simpler interface, but performance depends on the game, resolution, power mode, and settings.
The 80Wh figure is capacity, not a promise of long playtime. ASUS reports up to 9.9 hours in a light-game test and up to 2.7 hours in a heavy AAA test. Those are manufacturer results under distinct test workloads, not guaranteed outcomes; brightness, frame-rate targets, power settings, Wi-Fi, and background activity all affect runtime. High-performance play can also mean more heat, fan activity, and charging needs.
Windows opens access to Xbox, Game Pass, and other PC storefronts, but a handheld-sized touchscreen does not make every desktop dialog or launcher controller-friendly. Updates, drivers, launcher behavior, scaling, and power management can require attention. The physical design and the Windows experience are separate considerations.
- Choose it for: Windows storefronts, Game Pass access, and higher-performance PC gaming when you accept configuration work.
- Skip it if: You want a low-maintenance console interface, expect long AAA sessions away from an outlet, or need a compact budget device.
- Check before purchase: Current U.S. price, exact configuration, storage expansion, warranty terms, and the cost of any dock, case, charger, or power bank.
Analogue Pocket: best for original Game Boy-family cartridges
Analogue Pocket is a cartridge-first device built around FPGA hardware, rather than a general handheld PC running software emulators. It supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges out of the box. Optional adapters add support for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx, and Atari Lynx cartridges. Its 3.5-inch 1600×1440 LCD is designed to offer display modes inspired by original handheld screens.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That makes it compelling if you already own cartridges and want a dedicated way to play them. FPGA describes the hardware approach; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every player will prefer its image or input feel to every other setup. Analogue lists 6–10 hours of battery life. The optional Dock adds 1080p HDMI output, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz controller support, USB controllers, and listed configurations for up to four players.
- Choose it for: Supported original cartridges and a focused handheld experience.
- Skip it if: You want modern releases, broad 3D emulation, or a low-cost device that includes a large ready-to-play software library.
- Availability: Analogue’s page listed $239.99 and showed the Pocket out of stock when checked. Confirm stock before planning a purchase; adapters, the Dock, and cartridges can add to the total.
PlayStation Portal: best for PS5 streaming, not standalone play
Portal is a dedicated screen and controller for playing selected PS5 content over a network. Remote Play requires a PS5 and an internet-connected network. Sony lists 5Mbps as the minimum connection requirement and recommends at least 15Mbps for a better experience. Those figures do not guarantee smooth play: latency, Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, and the PS5’s connection all matter.
Sony also lists cloud streaming for selected PS5 games through PlayStation Plus Premium. This adds a way to stream supported games without using Remote Play from your own console, but it does not turn Portal into an offline or locally running handheld. The cloud catalog and supported titles are controlled by Sony and can change. Portal’s 8-inch 1080p LCD supports up to 60fps.
- Choose it for: Playing your PS5 elsewhere when you have a suitable network, or streaming supported cloud games with the required subscription.
- Skip it if: You do not have a PS5 and do not want the applicable cloud-streaming service, need offline gaming, or want a general-purpose handheld.
- Cost check: PlayStation Plus Premium is relevant to cloud streaming, not required for ordinary Remote Play; also verify the device’s current U.S. price.
Modern games, PC performance, and compatibility
Match the device to the software before comparing processors. Switch 2 is for official Nintendo games; Steam Deck OLED is for Steam and compatible PC software; ROG Xbox Ally X is for Windows storefront flexibility; Portal streams selected PlayStation games; and Analogue Pocket is for supported cartridges. These are different ways of accessing games, not interchangeable performance tiers.

Many budget retro handhelds may also suit older systems, but the right model depends on the system being emulated and the quality of its controls and firmware.
- Current demanding PC games: A high-end Windows handheld such as Ally X offers more performance headroom, but battery drain, heat, fan behavior, settings, and software compatibility remain part of the experience.
- Nintendo titles: No processor comparison substitutes for access to Nintendo’s official library.
- PS5 titles: Portal’s streaming experience depends primarily on the network and supported service or console, rather than local gaming hardware.
For Steam Deck, check the specific game’s Deck Verified rating and current player reports before buying if it is central to your decision. “Playable” does not mean flawless, and a game can change after an update. For Switch 2, consult Nintendo’s compatibility resource title by title.

Original cartridges
Analogue Pocket is the focused option for supported physical Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, with additional systems available through optional adapters. This route assumes you have the cartridges and want to play them; it is distinct from downloading files or running software emulators.
Official digital collections
Nintendo and PlayStation offer official digital games and collections through their platforms and services. Catalogs depend on region, storefront, and subscription status and can change, so check the current listing for the specific game rather than assuming it is included.
Emulation on a PC or retro handheld
Steam Deck OLED and capable Android or Linux handhelds can support a wider range of emulation software, configuration options, and display adjustments. Setup may involve choosing emulators, managing BIOS files where required, configuring controls, and tuning scaling or shaders. The legality of game files depends on jurisdiction and how they were obtained; owning a cartridge does not automatically establish that downloading a copyrighted ROM from an unauthorized source is lawful. Prefer official releases, homebrew, public-domain software, or files you have lawfully created where permitted.

Screen, controls, and comfort
Screen size and specification numbers are only part of handheld comfort. A larger screen can help with small text but makes a device less compact; OLED can provide rich contrast, while a high-refresh LCD can emphasize smooth motion. Brightness ratings, glare, refresh rate, and a game’s own frame rate also affect what you see. For retro games, pixel scaling and display modes may matter more than resolution alone.
- Steam Deck OLED: The 7.4-inch OLED, trackpads, gyro, rear buttons, and full-sized controls offer flexibility for mouse-like inputs and customized layouts.
- ROG Xbox Ally X: Its 7-inch 120Hz touchscreen and contoured grips are aimed at modern PC play; evaluate the Windows interface separately from the physical controls.
- PlayStation Portal: The 8-inch LCD favors a larger view of streamed games, but a higher-resolution display cannot fix network lag.
- Analogue Pocket: The small, high-density screen and display modes are geared to handheld-era games rather than large modern 3D titles.
Hand size, grip shape, stick and D-pad placement, trigger feel, weight, and session length are personal. If possible, try a device in person; specifications alone do not establish which is most comfortable for you.
Battery life, charging, and travel
Battery estimates are workload-specific. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED estimate is 3–12 hours depending on content; Analogue lists 6–10 hours. ASUS reports 9.9 hours in a light-game test and 2.7 hours in a heavy AAA test for Ally X. Those figures come from different sources and test conditions, so they are not a controlled cross-device comparison.
Demanding games, high brightness, higher frame-rate targets, Wi-Fi, and performance modes can reduce unplugged time. A larger battery can add weight without guaranteeing long AAA sessions. Before traveling, consider whether your games work offline, how the device resumes from sleep, and whether you will carry a compatible charger or power bank. For a PC handheld, check USB-C Power Delivery wattage rather than relying on a power bank’s mAh label alone.

Modern games can take tens of gigabytes or more than 100GB each. Advertised storage is not all free after the operating system and formatting, so a 512GB model will not hold 512GB of game data. Check the exact model’s storage and expansion options before purchase.
- Steam Deck: Valve lists 512GB and 1TB OLED models, NVMe SSD storage, and microSD support across Steam Deck models. A card can suit indies and retro libraries; verify game load requirements before choosing slower removable storage.
- Switch 2: Follow Nintendo’s current requirements for compatible expansion cards and storage rather than assuming a PC handheld card will work.
- Analogue Pocket: microSD is used for openFPGA cores and related files; that is separate from its primary cartridge-play capability.
- Internal upgrades: SSD replacement may require careful disassembly and can affect warranty coverage. Confirm the exact model, warranty, and manufacturer guidance before attempting it.
Switch 2 is designed for docking as well as handheld use. Steam Deck supports USB-C video output for a TV or monitor, and a dock can add convenient ports; it is an accessory rather than a requirement for handheld play. Analogue’s optional Dock offers 1080p HDMI output and controller connections. Portal is a streaming screen and does not become a docked console.
Compare the full setup you will actually use: the device plus any case, screen protector, storage card, dock, extra controller, charger, power bank, cartridge adapter, subscription, or replacement part. No accessory is mandatory unless your intended use requires it. Prices and stock vary, and several official pages do not expose a stable U.S. price in the available product information; check the relevant buying page before committing.
How to make the final choice
Give the most weight to the games you want and how much setup you will tolerate. A practical starting point is to allocate 30% of your decision to library fit, 20% to ease of use, 15% each to performance and controls, 10% to battery, and 5% each to display and storage, repairability, and accessories. Adjust those priorities: Nintendo buyers should weight exclusive games more; PC buyers should emphasize compatibility and performance; retro players should focus on cartridge support, display, controls, and legal game access; travelers should prioritize offline play, battery, weight, and sleep behavior; PS5 owners should focus on network reliability and Portal’s supported features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
- Name the games you will actually play. Sort them into Nintendo, Steam/PC, Xbox/Game Pass, PS5 streaming, or cartridge-based retro games.
- Check compatibility for must-play titles. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2 resource, Valve’s Deck Verified information, or Sony’s supported cloud catalog as appropriate.
- Set your tolerance for setup. Choose a console interface for simplicity; choose PC flexibility only if launcher, update, and configuration work are acceptable.
- Decide whether offline play matters. Portal depends on a network. For other handhelds, confirm that the individual game supports offline use and that any required first-run setup is complete.
- Calculate the setup cost. Include storage, a dock or case, charging gear, any subscription, and the games or cartridges not already in your library.
- Verify current price, stock, and regional terms. Availability and pricing change, particularly for products whose official pages do not show a stable U.S. price.
