30W Turbo

Asus ROG Ally BIOS 323 Adds 30W Turbo Support Through Compatible USB-C Docks

BIOS 323 let the original ROG Ally use 30W Turbo through compatible 65W-or-higher USB-C docks—but that is a performance power mode, not a guaranteed 30W battery-charge rate.

ASUS’s July 21, 2023 BIOS 323 update for the original 2023 ROG Ally allowed the handheld to use its 30W Turbo performance profile through compatible 65W-or-higher USB-C Power Delivery adapters and docks. It did not turn the Ally into a 30W battery charger: “30W” refers primarily to the system power limit. The update also reduced minimum brightness, preserved the GPU-memory setting during future BIOS updates, and added an ASUS-claimed plugged-in Performance-mode optimization.

What BIOS 323 changed

ASUS announced BIOS 323 on July 21, 2023, in its ROG Ally changelog. Contemporary reporting identified the firmware as version 323, while ASUS’s release notes listed four changes:

  • 30W Turbo support with a 65W-or-higher USB PD adapter or USB-C hub.
  • Plugged-in Performance mode optimization.
  • Minimum display brightness reduced from 25 nits to 10 nits.
  • The selected “Memory Assigned to GPU” value would be preserved through future BIOS updates.

This is a historical firmware milestone, not a newly released 2026 update. Current software may offer a later BIOS.

“30W charging” is not the same as 30W battery charging

The original Ally has several operating profiles: 10W Silent, 15W Performance, 25W Turbo on battery, and up to 30W Turbo when connected to AC power, as described on ASUS’s product page. The BIOS update changed whether the system could access that 30W Turbo profile through certain third-party USB-C docks and chargers.

JSAUX Docking Station for ROG Xbox Ally X (2025)/ROG Ally X/ROG Ally/Steam Deck/Legion Go/Legion Go S, 6-in-1 Dock with HDMI 4K@120Hz, Gigabit Ethernet, USB A & USB C 3.2 Gen 1, 100W Charging - HB0609
  • NOTE: When the ROG Xbox Ally / ROG Xbox Ally X is connected to the dock, part of the input power is consumed by the dock itself. Using the original 65W or lower PD charger may trigger the message “Not enough power to charge efficiently.” This does not affect gameplay, but charging speed may be slower and overall charging time may be longer. For optimal performance, a PD 100W charger is recommended
  • 6-in-1 Docking Station for Handheld: Experience enhanced gaming with 4K@120Hz HDMI output, Gigabit Ethernet, USB C PD charging, USB C 3.2 Gen 1, and dual USB A 3.2 Gen 1 ports. Enjoy crisp 4K@120Hz or 1080@240Hz HDMI output for vivid gaming visuals
  • Modular Docking Station: The JSAUX docking station provides dual functionality. Use it with the gaming console directly on the dock, or detach the base for standalone use as a stand, offering flexibility for both desktop and portable setups. The extra silicone pad ensures a perfect fit, enhances stability, prevents slipping, and improves support angles for a better gaming experience
  • DIY Customize Your Docking Station: Easily personalize your docking station by adding a custom card between the front cover and the dock. Just remove the cover, insert your card, and snap the cover back on. NOTE: Recommended card size is 3.00" x 1.13" x 0.01" (76.3mm x 28.7mm x 0.3mm). Custom cards NOT included
  • Perfect Compatibility: Compatible with ROG Xbox Ally X (2025), ROG Xbox Ally (2025), ROG Ally X, ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Legion Go, Legion Go S, Razer Edge, AYA NEO, AYA ODIN, Logitech G Cloud, and ONEXPLAYER. Supports 100W max power delivery, which is enough to charge your ROG Ally X, ROG Ally, Steam Deck LCD/OLED, or Legion Go at full speed when paired with the original charger

It did not establish that the battery itself replenishes at 30W. Battery charging rate and the APU’s system power limit are separate. A dock must first negotiate an adequate USB-C Power Delivery contract; only then can the Ally use the higher performance profile.

Why some docks stayed at 25W

ASUS said some third-party docks failed to communicate their full available power during USB-C PD negotiation. The Ally therefore played safe and capped Turbo at 25W. BIOS 323 changed the power-draw behavior so the handheld could use power the dock made available.

This was not necessarily a hardware defect in the Ally. It was a compatibility and power-contract issue involving the charger, dock, cable and connected peripherals.

SABRENT 6-Port USB-C Dock for ROG Ally X, Steam Deck, 4K HDMI (DS-RA6P)
  • WORKS WITH YOUR HANDHELD AND YOUR LAPTOP: Built for the Asus ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, Steam Deck, and Legion Go, and for any phone, tablet, or laptop with USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode. If your device's USB-C port does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode, video output will not work — check that first.
  • 4K HDMI DISPLAY OUTPUT: HDMI 2.0 port supports up to 4K@60Hz with HDCP 1.4/2.2, so gaming, work, and media all move to the big screen at full resolution.
  • 3 USB-A PORTS PLUS USB-C, ALL AT 5GBPS: Three USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 Type-A ports and one Type-C downstream port for a keyboard, mouse, controller, and external storage at the same time.
  • 95W PASS-THROUGH CHARGING, CHARGER NOT INCLUDED: The USB-C input passes up to 95W of PD 3.0 power through to your handheld so you can charge and play in Turbo Mode — but the dock ships without a power adapter. Use your handheld's own charger; a lower-wattage adapter charges more slowly and may not keep up under load.
  • A DOCK, NOT A STAND: This is a compact connectivity hub that sits on a desk or drops in a bag — it plugs into your handheld with a USB-C cable and does not cradle, hold, or prop the console up. If you want something that holds the device upright, this is not it.

What hardware is required?

The official baseline is a 65W-or-higher USB PD adapter, either connected directly or feeding a USB-C hub or dock. That rating is not a guarantee of sustained 30W Turbo, because the dock may reserve power for its own electronics, HDMI, Ethernet, USB devices or external storage.

  • A dock’s advertised input wattage is not the same as the wattage reaching the Ally.
  • Cable quality and supported PD profiles can affect negotiation.
  • Some combinations can show 30W Turbo while the battery slowly falls during demanding play.
  • A higher-wattage adapter provides more headroom, but adds cost, size and weight.

ASUS specifically warned that an insufficient charger-and-dock combination could permit 30W Turbo while slowly draining the battery. If that happens, try a higher-output adapter, a different cable or dock, or remove power-hungry peripherals.

How to check for the firmware

BIOS 323 was the version associated with the July 21, 2023 announcement. It may not be offered to every owner in 2026, and it should not be treated as the latest available firmware. ASUS’s current Armoury Crate SE documentation places firmware and driver checks in Update Center.

JSAUX 5-in-1 Docking Station for Steam Deck/ROG Ally X/Legion Go S-HB0602
  • Upgraded 5-in-1 Docking Station: Features HDMI 2.1 4K@120Hz output for ultra-smooth, crystal-clear visuals, plus 100W PD charging, dual USB A 2.0 ports, and a reliable Ethernet connection. • 4K@120Hz HDMI Output (Upgraded): Experience double the refresh rate compared to the previous 4K@60Hz version. Whether you’re battling online or watching cinematic cut-scenes, enjoy buttery-smooth gameplay and reduced screen tearing on external monitors.
  • Full-Speed 100W Charging: Supports up to 100W PD charging, easily powering your handheld in Turbo Mode. Keeps your gaming sessions uninterrupted — no need to worry about battery drain even during marathon play. Note: The ROG Ally's 30W Turbo Mode is fully supported, but a 100W charger is recommended.
  • Reliable Wired Ethernet: Enjoy a stable and consistent network connection with the built-in RJ45 port, ensuring low-latency performance for smooth online gaming and streaming.
  • Expanded Device Compatibility: Now works with Steam Deck LCD/OLED, ROG Ally / Ally X, Legion Go / Go S, and MSI Claw — making it your all-in-one solution across multiple handhelds. NOTE: Not for ROG XBOX Ally / XBOX Ally X.
  1. Connect the Ally to reliable AC power.
  2. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  3. Open Settings, then choose Update Center.
  4. Select Check for Updates.
  5. Install any offered BIOS, firmware, driver or Armoury Crate update.
  6. Keep the device connected and do not interrupt the BIOS installation.
  7. Restart when prompted, then check the available operating modes.

Labels can vary with current Armoury Crate SE versions. If a BIOS update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions rather than forcing an older package.

How to verify whether a dock now delivers useful 30W Turbo

  1. Connect the dock to a 65W-or-higher PD adapter and connect the Ally through the dock.
  2. Open Command Center and select Turbo.
  3. Confirm that the Ally reports AC-connected 30W Turbo rather than 25W Turbo.
  4. Play a demanding game for 15–30 minutes and watch the battery percentage.
  5. Repeat the test with HDMI, Ethernet, storage and USB accessories disconnected, adding them back one at a time.
  6. Compare the result with the included ASUS adapter connected directly to the Ally.

A 30W indicator alone does not prove that the battery is charging. Stable or rising battery percentage under load is the more useful result. Direct charging is also the simplest diagnostic baseline because it removes one layer of PD negotiation.

What performance improvement should you expect?

ASUS said BIOS 323 optimized plugged-in Performance mode, but its changelog supplied no FPS percentage, game-by-game results, benchmark method, temperature comparison or fan-noise measurement. Therefore, there is no defensible universal FPS increase to quote.

  • Magnetic RGB Cooling Fan: The included magnetic RGB fan is custom-designed for the ROG Ally (X), aligning precisely with its air intake for efficient cooling. It attaches securely and is easy to remove when not needed. NOTE: Due to variations in intake placement on other handheld devices, cooling efficiency may be reduced when used with non-ROG Ally models.
  • Dynamic RGB Lighting & DIY Custom Card Slot: The dock base offers 5 RGB lighting modes—Monochromatic, Breathing, Chasing, Gradient, and Stacking—while the fan features a 7-color gradient mode. Personalize your setup by adding a custom front card (3.00 x 1.13 x 0.01 inches / 76.3 x 28.7 x 0.3 mm). Just pop off the cover, insert your card, and snap it back.
  • Wide Compatibility & Turbo Mode Support: Compatible with ROG Ally X, ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Legion Go and Legion Go S. Fully supports 30W Turbo Mode on ROG Ally and Ally X. NOTE: 30W Turbo Mode requires a 100W PD charger to be plugged in (not included) and will not function without it.

Any measurable change depends on the game, resolution, frame-rate cap, drivers, thermals and whether the Ally was already receiving the intended power profile. ASUS’s own published benchmarks are manufacturer reference figures tested with specified BIOS, Armoury Crate SE, 65W PD and 30W Turbo settings; ASUS notes that results vary with configuration and newer drivers. They are not independent tests of BIOS 323.

The smaller firmware improvements

Lower minimum brightness

The panel’s minimum brightness fell from 25 nits to 10 nits, which is useful in dark rooms and can help when playing at a lower-power setting.

GPU-memory setting persistence

Future BIOS updates would preserve the selected “Memory Assigned to GPU” value instead of resetting it to default. More VRAM can help some games, but allocating more to the GPU leaves less system RAM for Windows and other applications.

What BIOS 323 did not claim to fix

The changelog did not explicitly address the ROG Ally’s separate microSD-card overheating controversy. BIOS 323 should not be presented as a confirmed fix for that issue; Tom’s Hardware’s coverage also noted its absence from the listed changes.

Choosing accessories after the update

Use a troubleshooting-first approach rather than assuming every “65W” product will work.

Accessory When it helps Important checks
Higher-wattage USB-C PD charger The battery drops while the Ally runs Turbo through a dock. Single-port output, supported PD profiles and enough headroom after dock overhead.
USB-C dock with charging passthrough You need HDMI, Ethernet or multiple USB devices at a desk. PD passthrough, power reserved for the handheld, and a practical return policy.
High-power-rated USB-C cable Turbo detection or charging is inconsistent. Power rating and build quality, not just USB data speed.
USB-C PD power bank You need longer portable sessions. Explicit output on the USB-C port, capacity, airline limits and a suitably rated cable.

Official starting points for ASUS hardware and accessories are ASUS, ROG and ASUS accessories. Current prices and compatibility vary, so verify specifications with the seller.

Bottom line

Owners of the original 2023 ROG Ally who were limited to 25W Turbo through a USB-C dock had a clear reason to install BIOS 323: it enabled 30W Turbo with compatible 65W-or-higher PD setups. The benefit is a system power mode, not a guaranteed 30W battery-charge rate. Test battery stability under load, because dock overhead and peripherals can still leave an apparently successful setup slowly losing charge.
