Xbox One S can output a 4K signal, play supported 4K video, and run HDR-compatible games—but it does not generally render games natively at 4K. If you see “4K” on a TV’s signal display, that describes the signal reaching the screen, not necessarily the game’s internal resolution. For Xbox One-era gaming aimed at native 4K, Xbox One X is the better fit.
What “4K support” means on Xbox One S
Microsoft’s 2016 Xbox One S launch messaging grouped several different capabilities under 4K and HDR: UHD Blu-ray playback, streaming video, HDR, and console output scaling. The distinctions matter because a console can send a 4K signal without rendering a game at 4K.

| Outputs a 4K signal to a compatible display | Yes, when configured for 4K UHD. |
| Renders most games natively at 3840 × 2160 | No; Microsoft distinguishes One S 4K video from 4K gaming. |
| Scales lower-resolution content for 4K output | Yes. Microsoft says non-4K content can be upscaled. |
| Supports HDR gaming | Yes, for compatible games and an HDR-capable display. |
| Plays 4K streaming video | Yes, where the app, title, account, connection, and display support it. |
| Plays 4K UHD Blu-ray discs | Yes on disc-equipped Xbox One S models; not on the All-Digital Edition. |
Microsoft’s August 2016 explanation of Xbox One S 4K and HDR says the Home screen, games, and apps can be displayed at 4K UHD when that output is selected, while lower-resolution material is upscaled. That describes the output resolution, not a promise that each game is rendered internally at 3840 × 2160. Microsoft later stated that Xbox One S supports 4K streaming and Blu-ray, but not 4K games, distinguishing it from Xbox One X’s 4K-gaming capability (Microsoft’s Xbox One S and Xbox One X comparison).
Native 4K, upscaling, and the signal your TV receives
- Native 4K rendering: The game creates its image at or near 3840 × 2160. Xbox One S is not generally a native-4K gaming console.
- Upscaling: A lower-resolution image is enlarged to fit a 4K output. It can look good, but it cannot restore all the detail of an image rendered at 4K.
- 4K output: The console sends a 3840 × 2160 signal to the television. A TV’s information panel can report that signal even when the game rendered at a lower resolution.
In a common setup, a game renders at its Xbox One S resolution and the console scales the image to 4K UHD output. If the console instead outputs 1080p, the television may do the scaling. Perceived sharpness varies with the game’s resolution and anti-aliasing, the console setting, the TV’s scaling and image processing, and whether the display is in game mode. A 4K signal alone does not identify the game’s internal resolution.

How to set Xbox One S output to 4K UHD
You need an Xbox One S, a 4K-capable display, and an HDMI connection and input that support the resolution. HDR additionally requires an HDR-capable display and compatible content. Microsoft’s Xbox One-era documented route is:
- Press the Xbox button twice to open the guide.
- Select Settings, then All settings.
- Choose Display & sound, then Video output.
- Set TV resolution to 4K UHD.
Menu labels can differ with system software, and TV manufacturers use different names for HDMI features. Microsoft’s setup guidance also recommends checking the display’s capabilities and notes that both suitable hardware and compatible content are required.

If 4K UHD is unavailable
- Check that the console is an Xbox One S, not the original Xbox One.
- Connect the console directly to the television while troubleshooting; an older receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device may not pass the required signal.
- Use an HDMI input on the TV that supports 4K, and enable its enhanced, UHD, or deep-color HDMI mode if the TV requires it.
- Review the Xbox display-detection or 4K TV details screen, and test with the television’s game mode enabled.
- Check that the TV supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR combination you are trying to use. A suitable high-speed HDMI cable matters, but replacing it will not fix a limitation elsewhere in the signal chain.
HDR gaming is separate from 4K resolution
Xbox One S supports HDR10 gaming when the game implements HDR and the connected display supports it. HDR affects brightness, contrast, and color range; it does not increase pixel count. A game can be lower-resolution and still use HDR, just as 4K video can be available without HDR.
Microsoft’s December 2016 launch-period examples of Xbox One S HDR games included Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, NBA 2K17, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XV, and World of Tanks. This is a historical list, not a current compatibility catalog; Microsoft’s 2016 HDR announcement describes those examples.

4K movies and the All-Digital Edition
A disc-equipped Xbox One S plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and can stream supported 4K video through compatible services and apps. Whether a stream is delivered in 4K depends on the specific service and title, account, network, and display. Microsoft’s Xbox One S announcement presented 4K Ultra HD video playback and streaming as media features.
The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition has no optical drive, so it cannot play physical UHD Blu-ray discs. It can still use supported digital video apps. Microsoft’s technical documentation also identifies 4K and HDR10 video playback support for Xbox One S and later hardware, while the original Xbox One is limited to 1080p video playback in that context (Microsoft’s HEVC and Xbox documentation).

How Xbox One S compares with other Xbox consoles
| Console | What to expect for gaming | 4K media and disc notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One S | Lower-resolution game rendering with 4K output scaling; HDR in supported games. Not generally native 4K gaming. | 4K streaming and UHD Blu-ray on disc-equipped models. |
| Xbox One X | Higher-performance Xbox One model; enhanced titles can target 4K, though not every game renders natively at 4K. | 4K video and UHD Blu-ray. |
| Xbox Series S | Newer-generation, digital-only console designed primarily for game rendering below 4K; supports 4K output for compatible content and display scaling. | No optical drive, so no physical UHD Blu-ray playback. |
| Xbox Series X | Newer-generation console designed for higher-resolution gaming, including native 4K targets in supported titles. | Better fit for a buyer seeking a modern Xbox with 4K-oriented gaming. |
“Xbox One X Enhanced” does not guarantee native 4K: developers can choose improvements such as higher resolution, textures, steadier performance, HDR, or other changes. Xbox One S and Xbox Series S are different generations despite the similar names. For official product information, see Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X.
Should you keep or buy an Xbox One S for a 4K TV?
It can make sense for 4K media or budget gaming
Xbox One S can suit someone who wants inexpensive Xbox One-era gaming, supported HDR games, 4K streaming, or UHD Blu-ray playback. The disc drive matters if physical movies are part of the reason for buying it. A 4K HDR TV can improve the overall setup, but the screen does not make the console render games natively at 4K.

Choose another console if native 4K gaming is the goal
For enhanced Xbox One-era games at 4K-oriented settings, consider Xbox One X, bearing in mind that used condition, warranty, storage, and availability vary. For newer software support and a longer-term console, Xbox Series X is the more appropriate 4K-oriented choice. Xbox Series S is a newer digital-only option, but it is not a native-4K replacement for Series X. Check current game support and local used-market terms before buying legacy hardware.
A 4K HDR television is worth considering if it also serves your movie viewing, other devices, or a future console. Buying a premium TV solely to turn Xbox One S games into native 4K is not a sound expectation.
