Which one is faster for games?
ROG Ally has the higher performance ceiling
The Z1 Extreme combines eight Zen 4 CPU cores and 12 RDNA 3 compute units, and ASUS specifies operation up to 30W. Steam Deck’s Zen 2/RDNA 2 APU has eight graphics compute units. That gives the Ally a higher theoretical ceiling, particularly in games that benefit from newer CPU and GPU architecture.
Performance is not a fixed number
The real gap depends on the Ally’s power profile, the game, resolution, graphics settings, firmware and driver state. A 1080p target can consume substantially more GPU power than 800p, while a lower-wattage profile can narrow the advantage. “Faster” therefore needs a complete test description: model, wattage, resolution, preset, frame-rate target and software version.

What the difference means in practice
- Choose the Ally when you want the option to spend up to its documented 30W ceiling for demanding games or higher frame rates.
- Choose the Deck when consistent SteamOS tuning and a lower-resolution target are more important than maximum output.
- Do not apply results from an Ally Z1 to the Z1 Extreme, or from a Steam Deck LCD to the OLED, without checking the exact configuration.
Display: 1080p and 120Hz versus OLED
ROG Ally: sharper motion and more pixels
The Ally’s 7-inch 1920×1080 panel offers a higher pixel count and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is the stronger choice if you value sharper text, a high-refresh desktop and the flexibility to target higher frame rates when the hardware can deliver them.
Steam Deck OLED: larger image and OLED contrast
Steam Deck OLED uses a 7.4-inch 1280×800 OLED display. OLED pixels can switch off for very deep blacks, so dark scenes and high-contrast interfaces have a different visual character from a conventional LCD. Valve positions the OLED model around the balance of performance, ergonomics and battery life rather than maximum resolution.
Neither specification is automatically superior: the Ally favors resolution and refresh rate, while the Deck favors OLED contrast and the way its screen, SteamOS interface and game settings work together.

Battery life, charging and power profiles
Capacity is in Steam Deck’s favor
ASUS lists a 40Wh battery for the Ally. Valve lists a 50Wh battery for Steam Deck and estimates roughly 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on use. Those figures are capacity and a broad manufacturer estimate, not directly comparable runtime guarantees.
Why runtime varies so widely
- Game workload and frame-rate limit
- Screen resolution and brightness
- Ally wattage profile
- Wireless use and background software
- Operating-system and firmware efficiency
For a meaningful battery comparison, use the same game, brightness, frame-rate cap, resolution and power setting. A high-performance Ally profile can trade runtime for speed; a Deck configured for a lower frame-rate target can last longer than a demanding title would suggest.
SteamOS or Windows 11?
SteamOS is the easier console-style experience
Steam Deck is built around SteamOS and Valve’s integrated handheld interface. For a library already centered on Steam, the result is a focused flow: select a game, adjust handheld settings and return to play without managing several desktop launchers.

Windows is broader but requires more setup
The Ally runs Windows 11, so it can accommodate multiple PC launchers and services. ASUS explicitly lists Steam, EA App, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy 2.0 and Android apps. This breadth is the Ally’s key software advantage, but Windows also means dealing with desktop updates, launcher windows, account sign-ins and controls designed originally for a mouse and keyboard.
Game Pass and Epic users
If Xbox or PC Game Pass is central to your library, the Ally is the straightforward choice because ASUS documents support for both services. Epic Games Store and other launchers are likewise listed. Steam Deck is the more natural choice when most purchases are already on Steam and you prefer its handheld interface.
Controls, ergonomics and everyday handling
Steam Deck’s design emphasizes the SteamOS interface and handheld controls, including its integrated touchpads. The OLED model also pairs its larger 7.4-inch screen with the platform’s established handheld layout.

The Ally’s Windows flexibility can be valuable, but Windows desktop interactions are less inherently console-like on a small screen. Consider which activities dominate your use: browsing several launchers and services favors the Ally, while repeatedly suspending, resuming and navigating one Steam library favors the Deck.
Fan noise, suspend/resume reliability and comfort are usage- and software-dependent. Check reviews for the exact firmware and game rather than treating a result from one power profile as a permanent property of the hardware.
Storage, microSD cards and docks
Both handhelds support storage expansion through microSD, making a high-speed card a practical way to add games. Check the exact model’s card specification, the card’s UHS rating and capacity before buying; listed compatibility does not make every card equally fast or reliable.

Internal storage, card capacity, a dock and other accessories should be included when comparing total cost. Current prices, seller condition, stock and country-specific availability vary, so the Ally’s $699.99 U.S. launch price from 2023 should not be used as a current quote.
Quick Recap
Which should you buy?
Choose Steam Deck OLED if you:
- Mostly play games purchased through Steam.
- Want the least complicated handheld interface.
- Prefer OLED contrast and a larger 7.4-inch screen over 1080p resolution.
- Value the listed 50Wh battery and Valve’s broad 3–12-hour usage estimate.
- Would rather tune a console-like system than manage Windows launchers.
Choose ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if you:
- Want the highest peak-performance option between these two configurations.
- Need Windows for Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, EA App, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy 2.0 or Android apps.
- Prefer a 1080p/120Hz display.
- Are comfortable selecting power profiles and handling Windows desktop tasks.
- Play demanding games where the Z1 Extreme’s newer CPU/GPU architecture and 30W ceiling can matter.
How to compare a listing before buying
- Confirm the exact model name: Ally Z1 or Z1 Extreme, and Steam Deck LCD or OLED.
- Record the storage capacity and whether the seller is offering new, used or refurbished hardware.
- Check the regional price, warranty, return policy and included charger or dock.
- For performance claims, identify the wattage, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target, game and firmware.
- For battery claims, confirm brightness, wireless state, frame-rate cap and the test’s runtime method.
- Budget for a microSD card or other accessories only after verifying their current compatibility and price.
