ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero Review: Is This Premium AM5 Board Worth It?

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Verdict: The ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO is an enthusiast ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM5 platform whose justification rests on unusually expansive storage and high-speed I/O, not on ordinary gaming performance. It supports Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 desktop processors, offers up to five M.2 drives when its included PCIe 5.0 card is used, six SATA ports, two rear USB4 ports and a 60W-capable front USB-C connection.

That feature set is compelling for a workstation-like gaming PC with several fast NVMe drives and USB4 peripherals. It is difficult to justify if you need only one or two SSDs, standard USB connectivity and 2.5Gb Ethernet. Current retail price and stock were not established, so the buying decision should be based on your required I/O and expansion rather than a quoted price.

What the ROG Crosshair X670E Hero is

ASUS positions the ROG Crosshair X670E Hero as a premium ATX board for AMD’s AM5 socket. The board measures 30.5 cm × 24.4 cm and uses AMD’s X670 chipset. ASUS lists support for Ryzen 9000, Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 7000 desktop processor series, subject to the processor support list and the BIOS version installed on the board.

Its central selling point is not a proprietary frame-rate advantage. A graphics card and processor will perform according to their own specifications. The board instead bundles more high-bandwidth storage and connectivity than a typical AM5 model: four onboard M.2 positions, an included PCIe 5.0 M.2 expansion card, six SATA 6Gb/s ports, two rear USB4 Type-C ports and a front USB-C header with unusually high charging capability when the required auxiliary power lead is connected.

That creates a clear divide between two types of buyer:

  • Feature-focused builders who will populate several M.2 sockets, attach USB4 storage or displays, or need extensive front-panel connectivity can make practical use of the design.
  • Conventional gaming builders with one boot SSD, perhaps a second game drive and ordinary USB peripherals may pay for expansion they never use.

The rest of this review explains the limits behind each headline specification so you can decide which group you belong to.

CPU and platform compatibility

Ryzen generations supported

ASUS lists the Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 desktop series as compatible. Compatibility is not identical across those families: PCIe generations, lane widths and M.2 behavior change with the processor installed. Before assembling a system, check ASUS’s current CPU support list and the BIOS requirement for your exact chip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen 7000 processors, ASUS specifies two CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slots. They can operate as a single x16 link or as x8/x8 when both are used in the supported configuration. That is the expansion behavior most buyers associate with the board, but it should not be generalized to every AM5 processor.

With Ryzen 8700/8600 and Ryzen 8500/8300 series processors, ASUS lists different slot generations and available lane widths, and the second slot can be disabled. Those chips do not expose the same PCIe resources as Ryzen 9000 or 7000. If a multi-card or add-in-card layout matters, choose the CPU first and then verify the slot table for that processor family.

Memory support

The board has four DDR5 DIMM slots and supports AMD EXPO memory profiles. The usable speed and stable capacity depend on the processor’s integrated memory controller, the number of DIMMs installed and the specific memory kit. ASUS’s maximum overclocked figure should therefore be treated as a qualified capability, not a promise that every four-DIMM build will reach it.

For a new build, use a kit that appears on ASUS’s current memory support list when possible. Install matched modules in the recommended paired slots, enable EXPO only after the system posts reliably at default settings, and update the BIOS if the support list calls for a newer version. Mixing kits or filling all four slots can require a lower memory speed than a two-DIMM configuration.

PCIe expansion and the GPU x8 question

The specific lane-sharing rule

The most important caveat is attached to the included PCIe 5.0 M.2 card. When that card is installed in PCIEX16_2 with a supported Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 processor, ASUS states that the primary PCIEX16_1 slot operates at x8. In other words, using the expansion card in that slot changes the graphics slot from x16 to x8.

This is a deliberate lane split, not a fault. The processor’s available PCIe lanes are being divided between the graphics slot and the add-in M.2 card. A graphics card remains functional at x8, but the bandwidth is lower than x16 and the exact effect depends on the GPU, workload and other devices in the system.

Does filling every M.2 slot slow the GPU?

Do not reduce the answer to “all M.2 drives force x8.” ASUS’s documented condition specifically names the PCIe 5.0 M.2 card in PCIEX16_2 and supported Ryzen 9000/7000 processors. The four motherboard M.2 sockets have their own CPU- or chipset-connected arrangements. Consult the manual’s lane diagram for your processor and slot combination rather than assuming that adding an SSD to any socket changes the graphics link.

If maintaining a full x16 graphics connection is a priority, leave PCIEX16_2 available for other expansion and use the motherboard M.2 sockets within their stated limits. If two or more PCIe 5.0 M.2 drives are more important than maximum graphics-slot width, the included card can provide that capacity, but the x8 trade-off must be accepted before purchase.

Storage: five M.2 drives plus six SATA ports

ASUS lists five M.2 positions when the included PCIe 5.0 M.2 card is counted: M.2_1, M.2_2, the expansion card, M.2_3 and M.2_4. There are also six SATA 6Gb/s ports for 2.5-inch SSDs or hard drives. The interface available at each M.2 location depends on the CPU.

Storage location Ryzen 9000/7000 Ryzen 8000 Connection
M.2_1 PCIe 5.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x4 Motherboard socket; CPU-dependent
M.2_2 PCIe 5.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x2 Motherboard socket; CPU-dependent
Included PCIe 5.0 M.2 card PCIe 5.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x4 Installs in PCIEX16_2 and can make PCIEX16_1 run at x8
M.2_3 PCIe 4.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x4 Chipset-connected
M.2_4 PCIe 4.0 x4 PCIe 4.0 x4 Chipset-connected
Six SATA ports 6Gb/s per port 6Gb/s per port For SATA SSDs and hard drives

The table shows why the processor choice matters. A Ryzen 8000 system does not turn the first two sockets into PCIe 5.0 simply because the motherboard is labeled X670E; ASUS lists PCIe 4.0 operation for those CPU families, including a PCIe 4.0 x2 link at M.2_2. Likewise, the expansion card’s interface changes from PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 9000/7000 to PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000.

Planning a five-drive layout

  1. Use M.2_1 for the fastest system or project drive when a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 processor is installed.
  2. Assign M.2_2 according to its CPU-specific link width; on Ryzen 8000 it is listed as PCIe 4.0 x2, so do not select a drive expecting a full PCIe 5.0 x4 path there.
  3. Use M.2_3 and M.2_4 for additional PCIe 4.0 x4 drives connected through the chipset.
  4. Install the included card only after deciding whether changing the primary graphics slot to x8 is acceptable.
  5. Use the six SATA connectors for bulk storage, archival drives or existing SATA devices, checking the manual for any port-sharing notes in your exact configuration.

SSD compatibility and boot behavior can change with firmware and drive models. ASUS’s current SSD and system-configuration lists are the authoritative check before purchasing a large group of drives.

USB4, USB-C and rear I/O

The rear panel carries 12 USB ports in total:

Rear connector group Count
USB4 Type-C 2
USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C 1
USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A 8
USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C 1

The two USB4 ports are the board’s most unusual rear-I/O feature. They are useful for compatible high-speed storage, docks and other peripherals, but real throughput and display support depend on the connected device, cable, drivers and system configuration. USB4 should not be treated as an unconditional guarantee of a particular transfer rate or monitor capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Front-panel headers add more USB connections, including a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C header rated for up to 20Gbps data. Its charging specification requires careful installation:

  • With the specified six-pin PCIe power connection installed, ASUS rates the header for up to 60W USB Power Delivery and Quick Charge 4+.
  • Without that auxiliary connection, ASUS states that the header supports up to 27W.

That six-pin lead is therefore a functional requirement for the headline 60W figure, not an optional cable to omit during a normal build. Confirm that your case’s front USB-C module and cable support the desired charging mode.

Networking, audio and practical onboard features

Wired and wireless networking

Wired networking is provided by Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet. The board does not include 10GbE, a limitation specifically noted in independent coverage. A 2.5Gb link is faster than gigabit networking for compatible switches, NAS devices and internet connections, but it cannot replace a 10GbE adapter in a 10Gb production or storage network.

Wireless networking uses Wi-Fi 6E, and ASUS includes an external antenna. Bluetooth is listed as version 5.3 on the specification page, with a note that the Bluetooth version can vary with the installed Wi-Fi module. Treat the listed version as module-dependent rather than an immutable property of every revision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio and recovery controls

Other listed hardware includes SupremeFX audio, HDMI output, BIOS FlashBack and a Clear CMOS button. BIOS FlashBack can be useful when a newer processor needs firmware support before the system will boot normally; follow ASUS’s file-naming, USB-port and power instructions exactly. Clear CMOS provides a recovery path after an unstable memory profile or overclock, but it resets firmware settings, so record custom fan curves, boot order and storage settings first.

Thermals and independent review evidence

PC Gamer reported a 52°C load temperature while looping Cinebench R23. That number belongs to PC Gamer’s test system and configuration; it is not a universal temperature target for every case, CPU, cooler or ambient room. Motherboard temperature sensors also measure specific components, so identify the sensor and test conditions before comparing the figure with your own monitoring software.

Tom’s Hardware evaluated the board primarily through its feature set and value proposition. Its conclusion was conditional: buyers who specifically need multiple PCIe 5.0 M.2 connections and USB4 have a reason to consider the board, while buyers without those requirements should compare less expensive AM5 options. The review also highlighted the absence of 10GbE. That is an independent reviewer’s judgment, not a rule that applies to every builder.

Installation checklist for a high-storage build

  1. Choose the processor first. Confirm the exact Ryzen model, BIOS requirement, PCIe slot behavior and M.2 generations in ASUS’s current support material.
  2. Update firmware before populating every drive. If the board ships with an older BIOS, use BIOS FlashBack according to ASUS’s instructions, especially when installing a newer Ryzen generation.
  3. Plan graphics-slot usage. Decide whether the included M.2 card will occupy PCIEX16_2. With supported Ryzen 9000/7000 processors, that placement makes PCIEX16_1 operate at x8.
  4. Install memory as a matched kit. Start at default settings, verify stability, then enable EXPO. Four-DIMM configurations may require a lower stable speed than two-DIMM layouts.
  5. Populate M.2 sockets deliberately. Place the boot drive in the socket whose interface matches your CPU and performance goal, then account for the PCIe 4.0 chipset-connected sockets and the Ryzen 8000 limitations.
  6. Attach the front USB-C power lead. Connect the specified six-pin PCIe cable if you want up to 60W PD/QC4+; otherwise the header is rated up to 27W.
  7. Install the Wi-Fi antenna before testing wireless links. Use both antenna connectors and position the antenna clear of the case for the best signal.
  8. Validate each device in firmware. Check that every M.2 drive, SATA device, USB4 peripheral and expansion card appears before installing the operating system and applications.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

The system will not boot after enabling EXPO

Power off, clear CMOS, and boot at default memory settings. If the system is stable without EXPO, update the BIOS and test the memory kit at a lower speed or with fewer DIMMs. Confirm that the kit is listed for your processor and board; EXPO support does not guarantee every kit’s advertised profile in every configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The graphics card reports an x8 link

Check whether the included PCIe 5.0 M.2 card is installed in PCIEX16_2. On supported Ryzen 9000/7000 systems, that is the documented reason for PCIEX16_1 to operate at x8. If full x16 operation is essential, remove or relocate the add-in card only in a configuration the manual supports, then recheck the link in firmware or your operating system’s hardware information.

An M.2 drive runs below its advertised generation

Verify the CPU family and socket assignment. Ryzen 8000 systems use PCIe 4.0 for M.2_1 and M.2_2, with M.2_2 listed at x2, while M.2_3 and M.2_4 are chipset-connected PCIe 4.0 x4 positions. A PCIe 5.0 SSD will operate at the interface available from that socket and processor.

Front USB-C charging is lower than expected

Confirm that the six-pin PCIe power connection specified by ASUS is attached to the appropriate header and that the cable and device support the requested charging standard. Without that connection, the board’s stated limit is up to 27W rather than 60W.

A USB4 device does not reach expected speed or video output

Check the device, cable, firmware, driver and display requirements as a complete chain. USB4 capabilities vary by implementation, and a port label alone does not guarantee a particular storage benchmark or display mode.

Is the Crosshair X670E Hero worth its premium?

Because a current retail price and availability were not established, the sensible comparison is feature value rather than a fixed price calculation. List the capabilities you will use during the board’s service life, then compare competing AM5 boards on the same axes:

Decision axis What to verify Why it matters here
M.2 capacity and generation Number of usable sockets, PCIe generation, lane width and CPU restrictions The Hero can reach five M.2 drives, but the add-in card has a graphics-slot trade-off
USB4 and USB-C Rear USB4 count, front 20Gbps header and charging-power requirements These are among the board’s strongest differentiators
Networking 2.5GbE versus 10GbE, Wi-Fi generation and module details The Hero has 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 6E, but no 10GbE
CPU and memory support BIOS version, processor list, DIMM topology and validated kits AM5 processor families expose different PCIe and M.2 behavior
Expansion-lane layout Whether an add-in card changes the primary slot width PCIEX16_2 use with the included M.2 card can change PCIEX16_1 to x8

Buy it when

  • You need several NVMe drives and can use the five-drive layout responsibly.
  • You have USB4 storage, a dock or another high-bandwidth peripheral that benefits from two rear USB4 ports.
  • You need a high-power front USB-C connector and will install the required six-pin PCIe lead.
  • You are comfortable choosing CPU, SSD and expansion-card combinations around the documented lane map.
  • Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GbE meet your network requirements and you do not need integrated 10GbE.

Look elsewhere when

  • Your build will contain one or two SSDs and ordinary USB devices.
  • You require 10GbE without adding a separate network card.
  • You want to install a second PCIe card while keeping the graphics slot at x16 and do not want to accept the documented x8 trade-off.
  • You are selecting a Ryzen 8000 processor but expect Ryzen 9000/7000 PCIe 5.0 behavior.
  • The board’s premium would be spent on features that will remain unused.

Final verdict

The ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X670E HERO is a specialized premium AM5 platform, not a universally better gaming motherboard. Its five-drive M.2 potential, six SATA ports, dual rear USB4 connections and conditional 60W front USB-C charging make it unusually capable for storage-heavy and high-speed-I/O builds. Those same features introduce decisions about CPU generation, lane sharing and auxiliary power.

Choose it when those capabilities solve a specific requirement. If they do not, the lack of 10GbE and the PCIEX16_2 lane-sharing consequence make it harder to justify over a simpler AM5 board, regardless of how attractive the specification list looks.
