The Asus ROG G751JY-DB72 was a formidable 1080p gaming laptop for its 2014–2015 generation, pairing a GeForce GTX 980M with a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS screen. Its defining compromise is just as clear: this is a bulky desktop replacement with short battery life, not a machine suited to frequent travel. Today, its appeal depends on condition, price and whether its older hardware still meets your games’ requirements.
What the G751JY-DB72 offers
The DB72 belongs to Asus’s 17-inch ROG G751JY family. Notebookcheck’s record for this exact model lists a fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics, a 17.3-inch 1920×1080 non-glossy display and a weight of 4.8 kg (Notebookcheck, 2015). Asus’s 2014 launch material describes the family’s GTX 980M with 4GB GDDR5 and a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS panel (Asus launch announcement).
Configurations differ across the broader G751JY range, including processor, memory and storage. Do not assume that a listing for a G751JY with a similar name has the DB72’s precise components. Check the model label and the actual installed parts before buying.
How well does it game?
At launch, the GTX 980M made the G751JY a strong system for 1080p gaming. Asus specified the mobile GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory, and a Laptop Mag review tested a related G751JY configuration with GTX 980M 4GB and an i7-4720HQ (Laptop Mag review). Computer Bild characterized its performance as very high and its image quality as high in a 2015 test (Computer Bild test).

That historical praise is not a promise of performance in current games. The laptop’s age means newer, demanding titles may require lower settings or may not run acceptably; check requirements for the specific games you play. The available review evidence supports its strength for its era, not a modern frame-rate guarantee.
Is the display good?
The large matte Full HD screen is a practical fit for gaming at the machine’s native 1920×1080 resolution. Asus described the G751JY family panel as IPS, while Computer Bild measured an 11.1 ms image-change time in its 2015 test. That figure is a result from that publication’s test, not a guarantee for every G751JY screen or a substitute for checking the condition of a used panel.

How heavy is it, and what is battery life like?
It is unusually heavy by laptop standards. Notebookcheck lists 4.8 kg for the DB72; Computer Bild reported 4.2 kg for the configuration it tested, and Laptop Mag lists 8.4 pounds for its reviewed configuration. These figures refer to different records and configurations, so treat them as a range rather than a single definitive weight. The power adapter adds further bulk.
Battery life is another desktop-replacement compromise. In Laptop Mag’s 2015 tests, the reviewed G751JY configuration lasted 3 hours 17 minutes during continuous web browsing and 1 hour 36 minutes in a 1080p Metro: Last Light test. Those are results from a period review, not a prediction for an aged battery; on a used unit, remaining battery capacity may be substantially lower.

Can you upgrade its storage or RAM?
Storage
Asus advertised M.2 PCIe SSD options for the G751JY family. Laptop Mag’s reviewed configuration paired a 256GB PCIe M.2 SSD with a 1TB 7200-rpm hard drive, showing that SSD-plus-hard-drive configurations existed. A compatible SSD replacement or expansion is a reasonable upgrade to investigate, but confirm the individual machine’s available slot, connector, drive dimensions, mounting hardware and BIOS support before ordering.
Memory
Memory capacity varies by configuration; for example, Laptop Mag’s reviewed unit had 24GB. The available specifications do not establish the DB72’s exact upgrade limits or the modules installed in every unit. Check the laptop’s actual memory configuration and service documentation before purchasing RAM rather than assuming another G751JY’s configuration applies.

What are the trade-offs in daily use?
TechRadar’s 2015 verdict praised the G751 as a good performer and enjoyable to use, while listing its heft, unimpressive battery life and expense as drawbacks (TechRadar review). In Computer Bild’s 2015 evaluation, the strengths were very high gaming performance and high image quality; very high weight and moderate expansion possibilities were the principal drawbacks. The practical takeaway is a capable, large gaming system best suited to a desk, rather than a light everyday carry.
Is the G751JY-DB72 still worth buying?
It may suit someone seeking an inexpensive, large-screen used gaming laptop for older or less demanding games, provided the specific unit is in good condition and its price reflects its age. It is a poor fit if you need modern high-end gaming performance, portability, dependable unplugged use or broad upgrade flexibility. Because current stock, prices, battery condition, warranty and driver support vary, evaluate the individual listing rather than relying on its original reputation.
