The ASUS ROG GR70 is a premium, roughly three-liter Windows 11 gaming desktop built around laptop-class hardware. Its headline configuration pairs AMD’s 16-core Ryzen 9 9955HX3D with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, not the desktop RTX 5070. That makes the GR70 most compelling as a compact, turnkey 1440p gaming PC—not as the best-value route to maximum desktop performance.

ASUS lists the GR70 at a U.S. starting price of $2,399 as of August 18, 2026, but multiple configurations exist. Confirm the exact SKU, processor, graphics chip, memory, and SSD before buying.

Quick verdict

Buy the ROG GR70 if desk space, portability, and a ready-to-use system matter more than upgradeability or maximum frames per dollar. Its unusual combination of a high-end mobile CPU, dedicated RTX graphics, Wi-Fi 7, extensive display connectivity, and user-accessible RAM and storage gives it a strong niche.

Skip it if you can accommodate a larger desktop, want a replaceable graphics card, expect native 4K gaming in demanding new releases, or are primarily seeking the most performance for approximately $2,399. A conventional desktop or carefully assembled small-form-factor PC will usually offer more modularity and a desktop-class GPU.

What is the ASUS ROG GR70?

The ROG GR70 is a standalone Windows 11 Home mini desktop. It is not a barebones computer and it is not a gaming laptop without its display. It arrives as a complete desktop system, although you still need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals.

ASUS announced it at CES 2026 as its first ROG gaming mini PC with an AMD Ryzen 9 processor. The range includes configurations with an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU or RTX 5060 Laptop GPU. It is separate from the Intel-based ROG NUC line. See ASUS’s CES announcement and the official product page.

Ryzen 9 9955HX3D: powerful, but still a mobile processor

The Ryzen 9 9955HX3D brings 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads, and 3D V-Cache to a very small desktop. ASUS lists a configurable 70W TDP for the high-end configuration and advertises up to 144MB of on-chip memory. The extra cache can benefit some CPU-limited games, while the core count is useful for compiling, streaming, rendering, and other parallel workloads.

It should not be described as a desktop Ryzen 9 9950X3D. The GR70’s processor is a mobile chip operating within a compact system’s power and cooling limits. Sustained performance depends on the configured power limit, cooling profile, memory arrangement, workload, and ambient temperature. A short boost result does not establish how the machine performs during a long render or extended gaming session.

RTX 5070 Laptop GPU: the distinction that matters

The GR70’s relevant graphics processor is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU. It is not the desktop GeForce RTX 5070. Both belong to the RTX 50 series and support shared platform features such as DLSS 4, but the mobile part has a different power, thermal, and performance envelope.

Do not apply desktop RTX 5070 benchmark results directly to this computer. Actual results depend on the laptop GPU’s configured power level, cooling, game, driver, resolution, ray-tracing settings, and use of upscaling or frame generation. ASUS product coverage identifies the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU in this system as an 8GB part. That capacity is adequate for many 1440p games, but it can become a constraint with demanding ray tracing, high-resolution textures, or future releases.

  • Advanced Cooling and 600W Gold PSU Air cooled thermal design maintains stable performance under heavy loads while the 600W 80 Plus Gold power supply delivers efficient and reliable power delivery.

The official ROG page identifies the graphics chip as a laptop GPU; consult it alongside the specification page rather than relying on a retailer title that says only “RTX 5070.”

What gaming performance should you expect?

1440p is the GR70’s most credible target. The RTX 5070 Laptop GPU should be assessed game by game, with the review or test identifying native rendering, DLSS mode, frame generation, ray tracing, and the exact driver version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 1440p: the natural resolution for this configuration and the best match for a high-refresh gaming monitor.
  • 4K: possible in selected games, particularly with reconstruction technologies and frame generation, but not equivalent to consistent native 4K performance from a high-end desktop GPU.
  • Ray tracing: viable only with realistic settings and an understanding that ray tracing can sharply increase the workload.
  • Competitive games: potentially attractive at 1440p, but actual frame rates and frame-time consistency require title-specific testing.

ASUS says the system is designed for demanding 2560 × 1440 gaming and can handle 4K titles respectably. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark result. The safest interpretation is that the GR70 is a compact 1440p gaming computer that can attempt 4K with modern rendering aids.

Size, cooling, and noise

At approximately three litres, the GR70 measures 282.4mm wide, 187.7mm deep, and 56.6mm high, and weighs 2.75kg. That is exceptionally compact for a system with a 16-core CPU and dedicated RTX graphics. The 330W power adapter is external, however, so include it when planning desk space or transporting the machine.

ASUS uses a three-fan QuietFlow cooling design and says it is intended to sustain performance while controlling noise. “Quiet” does not mean silent. The available evidence does not provide verified idle, gaming-load, rendering-load, temperature, or sustained-performance measurements.

Before buying, consider where hot air exits, leave clearance around the vents, and expect acoustic behaviour to vary with room temperature, dust, power mode, and workload. Armoury Crate provides monitoring and cooling-control features, but the exact controls can change with software versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgradeability: useful, but limited to memory and storage

The owner can access the two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 SSD slots. ASUS lists support for up to 96GB using two 48GB modules and highlights a Q-latch system intended to simplify M.2 installation.

  • Keep memory in a matched, dual-channel arrangement.
  • Confirm whether the target M.2 slot supports PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 in your exact SKU.
  • Check the M.2 2280 format, supported capacity, and heatsink clearance before purchasing a drive.
  • Do not assume that every 2TB configuration includes a PCIe 5.0 SSD.
  • The CPU and GPU are not presented as user-replaceable desktop components.

Opening the chassis or replacing components may have warranty implications depending on the country and the nature of the work. Check the local ASUS warranty terms before upgrading; do not assume that an upgrade automatically voids coverage.

Ports and multi-monitor support

Location Connectivity
Front/side One USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, headset/audio jack, power button, LED lighting, and ROG ARGB panel
Rear One USB4 Type-C with DisplayPort 1.4 and up to 40Gbps, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, two HDMI 2.1, two DisplayPort 2.1, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Kensington lock, and DC input
Wireless Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4

ASUS says the GR70 can support up to five displays simultaneously. That does not mean five displays can all operate at their maximum resolution and refresh rate. GPU output routing, port bandwidth, cable quality, and display modes determine what is practical. For a gaming setup, prioritise the connection and refresh rate required by the primary display rather than assuming every output is equivalent.

Price and value

ASUS’s U.S. page lists a starting price of $2,399 as of August 18, 2026. That figure is configuration-dependent and should not automatically be attributed to the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D/RTX 5070 Laptop GPU model.

The GR70’s value is primarily its integration: high-end mobile hardware, a tiny enclosure, Windows preinstallation, broad connectivity, and a relatively straightforward memory and storage upgrade path. It is not a value gaming desktop in the conventional frames-per-dollar sense. A larger tower can generally provide easier cooling, a desktop graphics card, more upgrade options, and better price efficiency.

The right comparison is therefore not simply “what is the fastest PC for $2,399?” It is “what would it cost and how much effort would it take to obtain comparable capability in a similarly small, turnkey enclosure?”

How it compares with the alternatives

ASUS ROG NUC

The ROG NUC is the closest same-brand comparison, but it generally uses Intel platforms and different graphics configurations. Compare the exact CPU, RTX Laptop GPU tier, chassis volume, cooling, upgrade options, and regional price rather than assuming the product names imply equivalent performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gaming laptop

A gaming laptop may contain similar mobile CPU and GPU hardware while also including a display, keyboard, battery, and speakers. The GR70 makes more sense when you already own a monitor and peripherals or want a permanent desktop setup without laptop ergonomics.

DIY small-form-factor desktop

A DIY SFF build can offer a replaceable desktop CPU and GPU, potentially better performance per dollar, and a longer upgrade path. It also brings component-selection risk, assembly work, compatibility checks, and potentially harder noise tuning.

Conventional gaming desktop

A compact tower or mid-tower generally delivers better thermals, easier repairs, and more graphics-card choices. Its disadvantage is the space it occupies—the feature for which the GR70 commands its premium.

Who should buy the ROG GR70?

  • You need a powerful gaming PC in a very small footprint.
  • You primarily target 1440p gaming.
  • You want a turnkey system rather than an SFF assembly project.
  • You value a strong CPU for streaming, compiling, rendering, or content work.
  • You need several display outputs, fast networking, and modern USB connectivity.
  • You accept paying a premium for compactness and integrated design.

Who should skip it?

  • You want the highest frames per dollar.
  • You specifically require a desktop RTX 5070 rather than an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU.
  • You want to replace the graphics card later.
  • You regularly play new AAA games at native 4K with high ray tracing settings.
  • You require guaranteed silence during sustained workloads.
  • You can fit a larger desktop or build a DIY SFF system.
  • The exact GR70 configuration costs close to a substantially faster desktop in your market.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the complete model number, not just “ROG GR70.”
  • Confirm that “RTX 5070” means RTX 5070 Laptop GPU.
  • Check whether the system has 16GB or 32GB and whether it is installed as two modules.
  • Verify the CPU model: Ryzen 9 8940HX, 9955HX, or 9955HX3D.
  • Check the SSD capacity and whether the included drive is PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0.
  • Include the 330W adapter in your desk and travel calculations.
  • Review regional warranty terms before opening the chassis.
  • Confirm any Xbox Game Pass promotion separately; eligibility, plan, timing, and region vary.

Final verdict

The ASUS ROG GR70 is best understood as a premium compact gaming appliance. The Ryzen 9 9955HX3D gives it unusually strong CPU credentials for its size, while the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU makes 1440p the sensible performance target. Its small enclosure, connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, and accessible RAM and storage are genuine advantages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those advantages do not erase the compromises: a mobile rather than desktop GPU, 8GB of graphics memory, a non-upgradable core platform, an external power brick, configuration confusion, and a high starting price. Buy it for compact turnkey performance and convenience. Do not buy it expecting the best desktop performance per dollar or a fully modular gaming PC.
