Verdict: The ASUS ROG Phone 2 remains an unusually capable cheap gaming and emulation phone, but it is now legacy hardware. Its 120Hz AMOLED display, AirTriggers, 6,000mAh battery, stereo speakers, headphone jack, and Snapdragon 855 Plus are still appealing. However, battery age, outdated software, regional LTE differences, and worn charging ports make condition and compatibility more important than the impressive original specifications.
Buy one only as a low-cost secondary gaming device—or as a carefully inspected bargain. It is generally a poor choice for a primary phone handling banking, work, security-sensitive apps, or dependable long-term cellular service.

What is the ASUS ROG Phone 2?
The ASUS ROG Phone 2 is the second-generation ROG gaming smartphone. ASUS announced it on July 23, 2019, and announced U.S. availability on September 23, 2019. It was designed as a performance-first gaming phone rather than a camera-focused flagship.
ASUS promoted it as the first phone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus and described its 120Hz, 1ms, 10-bit HDR AMOLED display as a first for phones at launch. Those are historical launch claims, not evidence that it is a modern performance leader. ASUS launch announcement

Why it was an excellent gaming phone
120Hz AMOLED display
The 120Hz panel can make compatible games, scrolling, and animations feel considerably smoother than 60Hz displays. It does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. Frame rate depends on the game, graphics settings, thermals, chipset load, and software support. Higher refresh rates also consume more power.
AirTriggers
AirTriggers are touch-based shoulder controls. Players can map them to on-screen actions, which is particularly useful in shooters: aiming, firing, jumping, or reloading can be moved away from the touchscreen. They are not mechanical buttons, and their usefulness depends on calibration, game layout, and grip. They also do not replace a full controller for every genre.
Landscape-friendly charging
A second USB-C port on the side lets players charge while holding the phone horizontally without placing a cable beneath their hands. On a used unit, test both ports carefully. Intermittent charging, a loose connection, or charging only when the cable is held at an angle is a major reason to reject the phone.

Cooling, speakers, and accessories
The GameCool II vapor chamber was designed to help sustain performance during extended gaming. It cannot guarantee low temperatures or maximum performance on a six-year-old device with possible battery, thermal, or internal wear.
ASUS also offered accessories including the ROG Kunai Gamepad and TwinView Dock II. These can be valuable to enthusiasts, but only when complete and functional. Check every bumper, holder, connector, joystick, trigger, and battery before paying extra. Compatibility with later ROG phones should not be assumed. ASUS accessory information
Battery and charging in 2026
The original 6,000mAh capacity was one of the ROG Phone 2’s greatest strengths. It does not describe the capacity of a used phone today. Lithium-ion batteries age, and heavy gaming, 120Hz operation, high brightness, and cellular use increase drain.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before buying, charge the phone from a low percentage with a known-good charger, test both USB-C ports, and confirm fast charging if it is advertised. Run a demanding game or video playback session and watch for sudden percentage drops, overheating, random shutdowns, or swelling. A battery replacement may improve endurance, but repair quality and loss of original sealing are concerns.

Software support and ownership risks
ASUS officially announced the Android 10 rollout for the ROG Phone 2 on March 9, 2020. The reviewed ASUS material does not verify a later official Android version for every ROG Phone 2 variant, so sellers’ claims of guaranteed Android 11 or newer support should not be accepted without model-specific firmware evidence. ASUS Android 10 announcement
In 2026, the old Android base and uncertain security-update status can affect banking, enterprise, DRM, identity-verification, and newer gaming apps. Google Play certification and Google services may also vary with regional firmware. ASUS explains that products at end of support no longer receive official hardware and software updates, subject to parts availability and legal requirements. ASUS support policy
Custom ROMs can provide newer software, but they may break or complicate banking apps, Widevine DRM, cameras, VoLTE, accessories, OTA updates, and bootloader status. Flashing can wipe the phone and create recovery problems. Treat a “global ROM” listing as a warning until you verify what it means.
ROG Phone 2 editions and regional variants
- Strix Edition: commonly associated with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, though availability and specifications vary.
- Standard or higher-spec editions: commonly sold with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage.
- Ultimate Edition: matte black finish, 1TB storage, and Cat 20 LTE capability advertised at up to 2Gbps under suitable network conditions.
- Global, U.S., China, and Tencent-market models: may differ in LTE bands, firmware, Google services, packaging, OTA updates, and warranty coverage.
Do not choose by storage alone. Identify the exact model number, firmware region, bootloader state, Google Play certification, and supported LTE bands. “Unlocked” does not guarantee compatibility with a particular carrier.

Networks: check before you buy
The ROG Phone 2 is a 4G LTE device with multiple regional configurations. Compare the precise model’s LTE bands with your carrier, then confirm VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling if required, SIM-lock status, and blacklist status. In the United States, carrier provisioning can matter more than the advertised specifications. A phone may support mobile data yet provide unreliable voice service if VoLTE is unavailable.
Advertised figures such as “up to 2Gbps” are theoretical maximums dependent on carrier aggregation, coverage, and network conditions—not speeds you should expect routinely.
Cameras and everyday use
The 48MP main camera, 13MP ultrawide, and 24MP selfie camera were respectable for the period, but photography was not the phone’s defining feature. Newer phones generally offer better low-light processing, HDR, stabilization, video, and camera software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe large body and gamer styling can be inconvenient for portability, while the 1080p-class display is less sharp than a QHD flagship. The front speakers and headphone jack remain genuine advantages for games, movies, and wired audio.

Used ROG Phone 2 inspection checklist
Hardware
- Inspect both glass panels, camera glass, antenna covers, and the frame for cracks, looseness, or liquid damage.
- Test the AMOLED panel for burn-in, unevenness, dead touch zones, brightness changes, and multi-touch.
- Test 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz modes.
- Test AirTriggers, vibration, speakers, microphones, proximity sensor, gyroscope, accelerometer, fingerprint reader, cameras, flash, and NFC if needed.
- Test the bottom and side USB-C ports for charging, data transfer, and stable cable fit.
- Test the headphone jack and charging while a game is running.
Software and identity
- Check the exact Android version, security-patch date, firmware region, and OTA-update behavior.
- Verify Google Play certification and normal Play Store operation.
- Check bootloader status, root, custom ROMs, IMEI, blacklist status, SIM lock, and factory-reset protection.
- Ask for the exact model number rather than relying on “ROG Phone 2” in the listing title.
Who should buy it?
Consider it if you need an inexpensive secondary gaming, emulation, or media device; accept old software; and can verify battery health, ports, firmware, and carrier compatibility. A higher-storage, genuine global or appropriate regional model is preferable when the price difference is small.
Avoid it if it will be your main banking or work phone, you need 5G or long-term security updates, you prioritize cameras, or a newer supported phone costs only modestly more. Also avoid suspiciously cheap imports with unclear Tencent or converted-ROM histories.
What to use instead
A newer ASUS ROG Phone is the closest replacement for AirTriggers, gaming software, high-refresh displays, large batteries, and gaming accessories, though it costs more. A current mainstream Android phone is usually better as a primary device because of longer security support, stronger cameras, broader carrier compatibility, and easier repairs. A modern universal Bluetooth or USB-C controller can add physical controls to a newer phone and is often more practical than sourcing discontinued ROG accessories.
Do not compare alternatives using price alone. Weigh software support, chipset efficiency, battery condition, cooling, cellular bands, cameras, repairability, and the cost of a controller or replacement battery.
Final recommendation
The ROG Phone 2 is still impressive legacy gaming hardware, not a current all-purpose smartphone. Its 120Hz screen, AirTriggers, large battery, stereo speakers, headphone jack, and landscape charging remain distinctive. But a healthy battery, reliable ports, correct regional firmware, and carrier compatibility determine whether those strengths are worth anything in 2026.
