The ASUS ROG Strix GL502VM remains a capable 1080p gaming laptop when bought cheaply and maintained well, but “portable” needs qualification. The commonly tested GL502VM-DB71 combines a GTX 1060 6GB, a 15.6-inch 1080p G-SYNC panel and a quad-core Core i7 in a 2.53 kg chassis; its charger brings the travel weight to roughly 3.1 kg. It is a solid used-market machine for older and esports games, not a modern high-end laptop: Pascal graphics are now in NVIDIA’s security-only support phase, and both the i7-6700HQ and i7-7700HQ fall outside Microsoft’s normally supported Windows 11 processor list.
Which GL502VM are you actually buying?
“GL502VM” identifies a family rather than one fixed specification. The original, widely reviewed configuration used an Intel Core i7-6700HQ, while GL502VMK and some GL502VMZ models use the 7th-generation Core i7-7700HQ. Memory, storage, operating system, display resolution and suffix vary by region. Check the complete model code on the bottom label or in BIOS before comparing a listing with a review. Notebookcheck’s review and ASUS’s regional product guide document this variation.
| Common configuration | Verified specification | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Core i7-6700HQ | Used in the U.S. GL502VM-DB71; later VMK models can use i7-7700HQ |
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 6GB GDDR5, 192-bit | The VM is not the GTX 1070-equipped GL502VS |
| Memory | 16GB DDR4 in the DB71 | Regional models also shipped with 8GB or 16GB |
| Storage | 1TB hard drive in the DB71 | Some variants add or substitute an SSD |
| Display | 15.6-inch, 1920×1080, 60Hz, matte, G-SYNC | A 4K option was documented for part of the family; verify the panel |
| Launch price | $1,399 | U.S. DB71 launch price in November 2016 |
The GTX 1060 distinction matters: listings that advertise a GL502VM with a GTX 1070 are confusing it with the GL502VS. Likewise, an SSD is not guaranteed; the DB71 shipped with a hard drive.
Design, size and what “portable” means
The reviewed chassis measures approximately 390 × 266 × 24 mm and weighs 2.53 kg (5.58 lb). Its 180W adapter adds about 575 g (1.27 lb), so a realistic carry load is approximately 3.1 kg (6.85 lb) before a mouse, headset or bag. That is transportable between home, school and a gaming event, but heavy beside current thin gaming notebooks. Notebookcheck’s measurements support those figures.

There is no optical drive. The chassis provides wired Ethernet, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, three USB-A ports, USB-C, an SD-card reader and a combined headset/microphone jack. The ASUS GL502VM manual documents the platform’s four-cell, 64Wh battery as an internal, non-user-removable pack.
Ports: useful selection, limited USB-C
On the tested DB71, the USB-C connector is USB 3.1 data-only, measured by Tom’s Hardware at up to 10Gb/s. It does not provide Thunderbolt 3 and cannot drive a monitor. For external displays, use the left-side HDMI 1.4 or Mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs. Do not assume that a USB-C symbol means docking or DisplayPort support on this laptop. Tom’s Hardware’s port testing confirms these limitations.
The manual lists SD and SDHC card support; it does not establish UHS-II or high-speed SDXC performance. Treat the card reader as a convenience slot rather than a modern creator-workflow interface.
Display quality: good gaming basics, dated motion performance
The common panel is a matte 15.6-inch 1920×1080 screen running at 60Hz with NVIDIA G-SYNC. Notebookcheck measured approximately 296 cd/m² average brightness, 973:1 contrast, 83% sRGB coverage and 55% AdobeRGB coverage. Those results suit gaming and general use, but they are not wide-gamut creator-display figures. Notebookcheck’s display measurements apply to its tested panel, not every family member.

Motion is the main weakness: measured black-to-white response was about 25 ms and gray-to-gray about 40 ms. G-SYNC reduces tearing and helps frame pacing, but it cannot eliminate the panel’s visible ghosting in fast scenes. ASUS documentation also indicated a 4K option for some GL502VM configurations, so confirm resolution and refresh rate in the seller’s exact specification.
Keyboard, touchpad and webcam
The reviewed keyboard has red backlighting, 1.6 mm key travel, anti-ghosting and a stated 30-key rollover limit. Dedicated functions control screen brightness, keyboard-light brightness, display switching, touchpad enable/disable, speaker mute, volume and Airplane mode. The webcam is a 720p (1.2-megapixel) unit—adequate for basic calls, but far behind current 1080p laptop cameras. ASUS’s manual describes Windows 10-era hotkeys and controls, so labels may differ after a newer operating-system installation.
1080p gaming performance in context
At launch, the GTX 1060 6GB was a strong match for a 1080p screen, and Tom’s Hardware described the DB71 as VR-ready. It remains sensible for older AAA games, competitive titles and a large back catalogue when settings are tuned. It should not be presented as a current high-end gaming GPU. NVIDIA’s Pascal support plan moved GTX 10-series cards from normal Game Ready support to critical-security-only updates beginning in October 2025, with that security phase scheduled to continue through October 2028. NVIDIA’s support notice explains the change.
That means future games may run, but new releases will no longer receive the same driver optimization attention as current architectures. Buying one in 2026 makes most sense for a low-cost used system, not for a machine expected to deliver several years of cutting-edge settings.

Battery life: acceptable away from the wall, poor for gaming
| Test | Recorded result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Notebookcheck practical Wi-Fi | About 3h 40m | Light web use under that test setup |
| Notebookcheck video | About 3h 55m | Local playback test |
| Notebookcheck idle | About 5h 15m | Wireless disabled, minimum brightness |
| Notebookcheck maximum load | About 1h 27m | Stress workload |
| Tom’s Hardware gaming | About 1h 49m | Tomb Raider benchmark, Balanced mode, 30fps battery cap, hibernation at 5% |
Those are test results, not an “up to” promise. Real unplugged gaming was under two hours in the cited measurements, and performance fell on battery: Notebookcheck observed the GPU at roughly 900MHz on battery versus approximately 1400MHz while plugged in. Plan to carry the large adapter for any serious session. Tom’s Hardware’s battery test and Notebookcheck’s results use different workloads, so they should not be merged into one universal runtime figure.
Thermals, noise and the used-laptop risk
In Notebookcheck’s combined Prime95/FurMark test, the surface reached approximately 65.3°C on top and 64.4°C underneath. The plugged-in CPU operated around 2.7–2.8GHz and the GPU around 1400MHz, indicating workable launch-sample thermals. These are controlled review measurements.
Long-term ownership is less predictable. ROG forum users have reported gaming CPU temperatures of roughly 85–93°C and hot areas above the keyboard. Those are individual reports, not a temperature reached by every unit. Dust, dried thermal compound, blocked vents, fan wear and changed power profiles can make an older GL502VM substantially hotter. ASUS warns that the underside can become hot and that obstructed vents can cause overheating. Inspect vents, listen for abnormal fan noise and budget for cleaning and repasting when buying used.

The bottom compartment gives access to memory and storage. ASUS documents both hard-drive replacement and M.2 installation. The M.2 2280 slot accepts PCIe/NVMe as well as SATA M.2 SSDs, while a conventional 2.5-inch bay remains available. Factory combinations vary from hard drive only to HDD-plus-SSD.

Windows, BIOS and driver support in 2026
Windows 10 reached end of standard support on October 14, 2025. Windows 11 installation may be technically possible with unsupported workarounds, but neither the i7-6700HQ nor i7-7700HQ appears on Microsoft’s normally supported Intel processor list. Extended Security Updates, where applicable, do not change the laptop’s processor-support status. See Microsoft’s Windows requirements, lifecycle information and supported Intel list.
ASUS separates BIOS downloads for GL502VM, GL502VMK, GL502VML and GL502VMZ. Match the file to the exact suffix printed on the machine; a family-name match is not enough. The commonly documented GL502VMK BIOS 308 is dated June 5, 2019 and lists “Improve System Stability,” but it must not be flashed onto another suffix. ASUS’s BIOS portal is the authority for the model shown on your unit. Driver downloads are chiefly legacy Windows 10 64-bit packages from 2016–2019, so a clean installation may require manually locating compatible chipset, audio, hotkey, wireless and graphics drivers at ASUS support.
What to check before buying a used GL502VM
- Read the full suffix (VM, VMK, VML or VMZ) and confirm the CPU, display and storage rather than relying on “GL502VM” in the headline.
- Verify that the GPU is a GTX 1060 6GB, not a mistaken GTX 1070/GL502VS listing.
- Check battery health, charger wattage, screen response or ghosting, dead pixels, keyboard backlight and webcam operation.
- Test every port, including HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, USB-C data, USB-A, Ethernet, SD reader and headset jack.
- Run a sustained game or stress test while monitoring temperatures; investigate sustained CPU readings in the high 80s or 90s Celsius.
- Confirm the BIOS version and avoid flashing files intended for another suffix.
- Price in an SSD, cleaning, possible repasting and the cost of a replacement 180W adapter.
Verdict
The GL502VM is still a coherent 1080p gaming platform when its price reflects its age. Its strongest points are the GTX 1060 6GB, useful upgrade access, G-SYNC on the common panel and a broad physical port selection. Its compromises are substantial carry weight, slow display response, short gaming battery life, aging thermals, uncertain configuration and an increasingly awkward Windows-and-driver future. Buy a verified, healthy example for inexpensive 1080p gaming; do not buy it on the assumption that every GL502VM has the same screen, SSD, CPU, USB-C features or long-term support.
