For current flagship gaming laptops, HP’s OMEN MAX 16 (2025) and Dell’s Alienware 18 Area-51 (2025) target different buyers: the OMEN is a more compact 16-inch RTX 5090 system, while the Alienware is a much larger 18-inch desktop-replacement. Your best choice depends on chassis size, portability, display preference, software controls and the exact configuration—not the logo.
HP OMEN and Alienware: what is actually being compared?
HP’s current high-end reference is the OMEN MAX 16 (2025). Dell’s comparable flagship is the Alienware 18 Area-51 (2025). Both families can use Intel Core Ultra Series 2 HX processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50-series graphics, but they are not a controlled same-size test: one is 16 inches and the other 18 inches. The exact CPU, GPU power limit, cooling profile, memory, firmware, display and power mode can change results substantially. A brand-wide winner therefore cannot be established from these models alone (RTINGS comparison).

The Alienware figures above describe one reviewed AA18250 configuration, not every Alienware 18 SKU. OMEN specifications likewise vary by exact product code; HP’s current OMEN 16 documentation lists features such as HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C and USB 3.2 on particular models (HP specifications).
Gaming performance and cooling
OMEN MAX 16: stable performance in testing, audible fans
In a 25-run 3DMark Time Spy test, the OMEN MAX 16 maintained 99.4% frame-rate stability. Windows Central also describes its fans as loud, with a comparatively high-pitched character. That combination suggests strong sustained performance, but noise is part of the trade-off (Windows Central review).
#1 Best Overall

Alienware 18: more room, not an automatic speed guarantee
The Alienware’s 18-inch chassis provides more physical space than a 16-inch laptop, but size alone does not prove higher frame rates. GPU wattage, firmware and the selected thermal preset are decisive. The 175 W RTX 5090 in the cited AA18250 review unit is a configuration detail buyers should verify rather than assume across the range.
What the evidence supports
- Do not treat “Alienware always has better cooling” as a verified brand rule.
- Do not assume the larger Alienware is always faster than a high-end OMEN.
- Compare the exact model numbers and GPU power limits, then check independent testing of those configurations.
Displays, size and portability
Choose Alienware for a larger desktop-replacement experience
An 18-inch 2560×1600 300-Hz panel gives the Alienware 18 a spacious gaming workspace and suits a mostly stationary setup. Its 4.34 kg weight makes it a transportable desktop replacement rather than an everyday lightweight laptop (PC Gamer review).
Choose OMEN for a smaller footprint
The 16-inch OMEN MAX is physically easier to fit in a backpack or on a smaller desk. It remains a high-end RTX 5090 machine, not merely a budget alternative. A smaller chassis can still deliver stable results, although its acoustic profile may be more noticeable.
Rank #2
- Unapologetic power: Area-51 was intentionally designed to reach new performance horizons by enabling higher graphics and processor power limits.
- Game changing graphics: Step into the future of gaming and creation with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Series Laptop GPUs, powered by NVIDIA Blackwell and AI.
- Intelligent processing: Intel Core Ultra 9-275HX processors integrate CPU, built-in GPU, and NPU into a single package designed for AI acceleration and balanced performance across your favorite things to do.
- Introducing the Cryo-Chamber: Developed by our engineers, Area-51’s new Cryo-Chamber structure, located at the bottom of the laptop, focuses air to the core components where it matters the most.
- Bringing comfort to the forefront: Our new Area-51 laptops combine mystery and other-wordly design with fluid contours and soft surfaces that inspires comfortable gameplay for hours.
Battery gaming and everyday use
Alienware 18 gaming on battery is capped at 30 fps. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate, but it does not remove the underlying battery-power limit (PC Gamer review). For serious gaming, plan to use the supplied power adapter.
The Alienware’s 300-Hz mode also needs to be switched off in Alienware software for non-gaming work if you do not want the panel running continuously at its maximum refresh rate. This is a practical battery and desktop-use consideration.
Control software: OMEN Gaming Hub versus Alienware Command Center
OMEN Gaming Hub
OMEN Gaming Hub is HP’s current control application; “OMEN Command Center” is an outdated name for older software. HP distributes the current app through the Microsoft Store (HP support instructions).

- Intelligent processing: Intel Core Ultra HX processors integrate CPU, built-in GPU and NPU into a single package designed for AI acceleration and balanced performance across your favorite things to do.
- Game changing graphics: Step into the future of gaming and creation with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPUs, powered by NVIDIA Blackwell and AI.
- Advanced thermals for extended play: Our advanced cooling technology, Alienware Cryo-tech, is designed to maintain system stability even during the most demanding sessions.
- Blend into any environment: Activate Stealth Mode with F7 to turn AlienFX RGB keyboard lighting to white and switch performance to Quiet Mode for a more subtle, covert experience*. *Quiet mode lowers noise produced by your system's cooling fans when possible. While your computer's performance might be slightly impacted, this option may also reduce both CPU and GPU power consumptions.
Depending on the computer and app build, OMEN Gaming Hub combines game launching, a game store, performance overlays, hardware settings, lighting, media management and game-specific profiles. HP also documents download-speed monitoring, voltage and overclocking controls subject to chipset limits, and macro configuration for OMEN systems equipped with P1–P6 macro keys. HP does not publish one universal click-by-click menu tree for every model, so labels can differ.
Alienware Command Center 6.x
Alienware Command Center 6.x (AWCC) is Dell’s current major software generation for supported systems and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 (introduction; supported operating systems). Its main areas include Dashboard, Performance, Game Library, AlienFX and Settings.
Open Dashboard → Performance for system controls, or use a game’s Game Title page → Performance area for a title-specific setup (Dell performance guide). Performance view reports CPU, GPU, memory and C-drive usage; Thermal view reports CPU/GPU temperatures and fan speeds. Dell warns that these readings may differ from Task Manager, NVIDIA Overlay or NZXT Cam.

On laptops, AWCC presets are Battery, Quiet, Balanced, Performance, Max/Overdrive and Custom. Battery mode prioritizes charging while plugged in and reduces performance when unplugged. Preset changes can take time to apply.
AWCC overlay and recent behavior
The overlay can show the active preset, utilization, memory, C-drive usage, temperatures and fan speeds. Click the Gauge icon for performance data, the Temperature icon for thermal data, and the Pin icon to keep it visible. Press CTRL + SHIFT + Y to show or hide it (Dell overlay guide).
AWCC 6.13 adjusts performance behavior when Windows Energy Saver is enabled and adds features including new Dolby-app linking and Ubisoft Store detection. On specified Intel 200S Boost systems, a system-level performance-control option can intentionally lock all presets; that lock is not necessarily an app failure (AWCC 6.13 notes).

Verdict
For most gamers who need a powerful laptop that is easier to carry, the HP OMEN MAX 16 is the more practical choice and has demonstrated excellent repeated-test stability. Choose the Alienware 18 Area-51 instead when a huge 18-inch screen, desktop-replacement design and AWCC’s control suite matter more than weight, battery gaming or portability. Compare exact SKUs and independent tests before buying: the hardware configuration matters more than the HP or Alienware badge.
