Verdict: The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched worldwide on October 16, 2025. They are not portable Xbox Series consoles. They are Windows 11 gaming PCs made by ASUS with AMD hardware and Xbox software integration, including a controller-focused Xbox Full Screen Experience, Game Pass access, cloud gaming and Remote Play.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the serious performance model, with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of memory, a 1 TB SSD and an 80 Wh battery. The white ROG Xbox Ally costs less and offers the same basic interface and display, but has a lower-power Ryzen Z2 chip, 16 GB of memory, 512 GB of storage and a 60 Wh battery. Steam Deck remains the easier choice for many Steam-first players, while discounted older Windows handhelds may offer better value.
What actually launched?
ASUS unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally family at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, 2025. Preorders opened on September 25 in the United States and selected markets, followed by worldwide retail availability on October 16, 2025. ASUS builds the hardware, AMD supplies the processors, and Xbox provides the account, software, storefront, cloud and ecosystem integration.
The accurate description is an ASUS Windows 11 gaming handheld with an Xbox-optimized front end and access to Xbox services. Neither model uses Xbox Series S or Series X hardware, nor can it generally install arbitrary Xbox console binaries locally.

The display is essentially the same, so the Ally X premium pays for performance headroom, faster and more plentiful memory, storage, battery capacity and more flexible connectivity—not a higher-resolution or OLED screen. What does “Xbox” mean on these devices?
Xbox Full Screen Experience
Both handhelds boot into Xbox Full Screen Experience, a controller-oriented interface intended to replace the Windows desktop as the normal gaming starting point. It presents Xbox, Game Pass and supported installed PC games in one library, exposes handheld performance controls and makes docked television play more console-like.

Game Pass and the Xbox PC app
Eligible purchases include three months of Xbox Game Pass in select markets. The exact tier and eligibility depend on the market and checkout terms; Xbox says the subscription continues at its regular recurring price unless canceled. Confirm the offer before buying at Xbox’s product page.
Game Pass is most useful if you already use Xbox or PC Game Pass, want a rotating catalog or play Xbox Play Anywhere titles. It is less compelling if your library is primarily on Steam, you do not want a recurring subscription or your region has different catalog and cloud availability.
Local PC games, Play Anywhere, cloud and Remote Play
Windows lets the handheld run PC versions from the Xbox app, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and Ubisoft Connect. The Xbox library can aggregate supported games, but an entry may still require a separate purchase, account login or launcher.
For an Xbox console game, ask these questions:
- Does it have a Windows PC version?
- Is it included in the buyer’s Game Pass tier?
- Is it an Xbox Play Anywhere title?
- Is cloud gaming available for that game and region?
- Can it be streamed from the owner’s Xbox console through Remote Play?
An Xbox console license does not automatically provide a Windows PC copy of every game. Play Anywhere entitlements do carry across Xbox consoles, PC and supported devices for participating titles; details are listed at Xbox Play Anywhere. Cloud gaming and Remote Play depend on subscription, network, region and service support.
Performance: the Ally X is the model for demanding games
The Ally X combines the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of shared memory and a 35 W Turbo mode. Reviews found it capable with modern AAA games, generally using 720p or 900p rendering, medium settings, AMD FSR or another upscaler and a frame-rate cap. Operating around 17–25 W can balance noise and battery; 35 W Turbo is most useful near a charger or when docked.

The standard Ally is better understood as an entry-level Windows handheld. Its Ryzen Z2 and 16 GB of memory suit indie games, older AAA releases, emulation and many PC Game Pass titles, but leave less room for demanding future releases.
Results vary with the game, resolution, preset, TDP, power state, upscaling, frame generation, drivers, BIOS, thermal conditions and shader compilation. ASUS claimed up to a 30% improvement in selected pre-release tests compared with the previous ROG Ally X; that is a manufacturer claim, not a universal retail benchmark. The Ally X’s 80 Wh battery is one-third larger than the standard Ally’s 60 Wh unit. It does not make demanding AAA gaming an all-day activity. Independent reviews reported roughly two to three hours in demanding, high-power tests and approximately five to six hours in lighter or more aggressively optimized use, with the exact game, brightness, refresh rate, TDP and resolution producing large differences. - High-wattage AAA gaming depletes either battery quickly.
- Indie games, emulation, video and low-power profiles last substantially longer.
- Cloud gaming reduces local rendering work but still depends on Wi-Fi and screen settings.
- Travelers should carry a suitable USB-C Power Delivery charger or power bank.
Screen, controls, docking and storage
Display
Both models use a 7-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz IPS touchscreen with approximately 500 nits brightness and variable refresh rate. It is fast and bright for indoor use and many outdoor situations, but it does not provide OLED contrast or black levels. Because 1080p is demanding for a handheld GPU, 720p or 900p with upscaling can produce a better experience in modern AAA games than native resolution.
Ergonomics
The contoured grips are inspired by Xbox Wireless Controller ergonomics, and reviewers generally praised the shape, full-size analog sticks and button layout for longer sessions. The Ally X weighs approximately 715 g, so comfort remains a personal trade-off rather than an objective “best” verdict. Exact trigger and wireless specifications can vary by regional SKU; check the relevant ASUS sheet. TV play and expansion
USB-C display output supports a docked monitor or TV setup. You need a compatible dock, charger, display cable and screen. Xbox says docked play is tuned for resolution, refresh rate and HDR behavior; details are on the Xbox product page.

Back up data, confirm the current ASUS service instructions and recognize that opening the device can create damage or warranty complications. A microSD card is convenient for additional storage, but it does not eliminate launcher, DRM or game-performance limitations.

Steam Deck OLED or LCD
Steam Deck offers SteamOS, a more appliance-like Steam experience and an OLED option. It is usually the better fit for a Steam-first buyer who values simplicity. Windows Game Pass PC installation, some anti-cheat systems and Xbox Play Anywhere support can differ substantially from a Windows handheld, so it is not a direct replacement for Xbox-focused users. Lenovo Legion Go and other Windows handhelds
Lenovo’s Legion Go family and devices such as MSI Claw provide alternative screens, controls, processors and port layouts. They may become compelling when discounted or when a particular hardware feature matters more than Xbox branding. They retain Windows maintenance and do not necessarily include the same Xbox-oriented front end. Lenovo’s product information is at Lenovo Legion Go.
Older ROG Ally models
A discounted 2023 ROG Ally or 2024 ROG Ally X can be the rational purchase if existing games already run acceptably on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform. The new models add Xbox Full Screen Experience integration, but the largest hardware gains are in the Ally X’s processor, memory, battery, storage and ports. Which model should you buy?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want Game Pass and the Xbox interface at the family’s lowest entry price.
- Your library is mostly indie games, older titles, emulation or moderate PC games.
- You normally play near a charger or dock.
- You do not need 1 TB of storage or 24 GB of shared memory.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You play current AAA games and want the strongest performance in this lineup.
- You value 24 GB of memory and the 80 Wh battery.
- You need two USB-C ports, including USB4, for display and peripherals.
- You want more headroom for future games and accept the $999.99 US launch price.
Choose Steam Deck or an older handheld if:
- Your priority is a simpler SteamOS appliance rather than Xbox integration.
- You want OLED display options or a lower entry cost.
- You find a substantial discount on an older ROG Ally, Legion Go or another Windows device.
- You dislike Windows updates, separate launchers, desktop dialogs and touchscreen troubleshooting.
Common questions before buying
Can I download an Xbox console game I already own?
Only when it has a supported Windows PC version or Play Anywhere entitlement. Otherwise use cloud gaming or Remote Play where available.
Can I play offline?
Sometimes. Offline behavior depends on the store, DRM, account authentication and whether first-run setup has completed. Game Pass and individual launchers can make offline access less predictable than on a dedicated console.
Will every Game Pass title appear in the interface?
No. Check whether the title has a PC version, is included in your tier and is available in your region. An Xbox console listing does not imply a native PC installation.
Does 1080p mean games run internally at 1080p?
No. Demanding games often render below 1080p and use upscaling, dynamic resolution or frame generation.

Is cloud gaming a substitute for local performance?
Only when your connection has sufficient bandwidth and low latency. It also depends on service availability, subscription entitlement and regional support.
