ASUS said its Ryzen Z1 ROG Ally reached 30 FPS or higher at 1080p in Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo IV when running in Turbo mode. That is a manufacturer-reported result, not an independent benchmark. ASUS also linked comparison charts for both 1080p and 720p scaled to 1080p with RSR, but its accessible article text does not give the individual per-game FPS figures.
What ASUS reported about ROG Ally performance
In an article published September 29, 2023, ASUS ROG described testing the standard Ryzen Z1 Ally against the Z1 Extreme model. Its prose makes one specific claim about the standard Z1: Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo IV were capable of at least 30 FPS at 1080p in Turbo mode. The claim applies to those two named games and that power mode; it is not a promise for every game, settings combination, or operating mode. ASUS ROG’s benchmark article does not state a test methodology in the accessible text.
ASUS linked one chart at 1080p and another for games rendered at 720p and scaled to 1080p using Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). The linked charts’ per-game values are not transcribed in the accessible article text, so exact FPS figures beyond ASUS’s 30-FPS statement cannot be established from that text.
How the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme hardware differs
The most concrete distinction is the chips’ listed CPU and graphics resources. ASUS gives the standard Ryzen Z1 six Zen 4 CPU cores, twelve threads, and four RDNA 3 graphics compute units, with support for FSR and RSR. HotHardware reported that the Z1 Extreme has eight CPU cores and twelve RDNA 3 compute units. These configurations indicate substantially more graphics resources in the Extreme, but they do not by themselves establish a fixed FPS advantage: results vary with the game, resolution, settings, and power mode.

| Configuration | CPU | Graphics | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen Z1 ROG Ally | Six Zen 4 cores; twelve threads (ASUS ROG, 2023) | Four RDNA 3 compute units; FSR and RSR support (ASUS ROG, 2023) | ASUS claimed at least 30 FPS at 1080p in Cyberpunk 2077 and Diablo IV in Turbo mode. |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme ROG Ally | Eight CPU cores (HotHardware, 2023) | Twelve RDNA 3 compute units (HotHardware, 2023) | The cited reporting identifies the configuration, but does not provide a directly comparable, independently tested result here. |
What the figures can—and cannot—tell you
FPS is not the same as smoothness
HotHardware’s September 29, 2023 report explicitly said its author had not tested a Ryzen Z1 processor. It was reporting ASUS’s benchmark rather than presenting its own Z1 test. The report also notes that average FPS does not show how consistent or smooth gameplay feels; frame pacing and dips can affect the experience even when an average looks acceptable. Treat ASUS’s result as a manufacturer claim, not independent confirmation of real-world smoothness.
Turbo performance has a battery trade-off
ASUS’s 30-FPS statement is specifically tied to Turbo mode. HotHardware cautioned that demanding AAA games can sharply reduce battery life, but did not provide a measured battery-life comparison for the two Z1 variants. Its expectations about lower-wattage performance or battery life should not be read as Z1 test results.

Resolution and upscaling matter
ASUS’s second chart used 720p rendering scaled to 1080p with RSR, rather than native 1080p rendering. That is a different rendering approach, so results from the two charts should not be treated as a like-for-like native-resolution comparison. ASUS’s article identifies the test modes but its accessible text does not supply the individual chart values.
Which ROG Ally configuration makes more sense?
ASUS’s own guidance is to consider the games you play, your desired frame rate and image-quality settings, and your budget. A practical choice follows those same factors:

- Choose around your game library. If you mainly play demanding recent 3D games, the Z1 Extreme’s larger CPU and GPU configuration is the stronger hardware starting point. For lighter, older, indie, or retro games, the standard Z1 may be sufficient, but the cited results do not establish performance for every title.
- Decide what resolution and settings you want. Native 1080p, reduced settings, and 720p scaled to 1080p with RSR are distinct trade-offs. ASUS included both native 1080p and 720p/RSR chart modes, but the missing per-game values prevent a precise comparison from the article text.
- Set a frame-rate target and account for power mode. The standard Z1’s cited 30-FPS-or-higher claim applies only to two named games in Turbo mode. If you want a higher frame rate or expect to play demanding games away from a charger, do not assume that result will carry over to other modes.
- Compare current prices, not the 2023 launch-era gap. HotHardware reported the Z1 Ally at $599, $100 less than the Z1 Extreme version, at the time of its September 2023 article. That is historical context, not current pricing or a recommendation about today’s value.
What else ASUS said had changed since launch
In its September 2023 article, ASUS also listed software and compatibility updates made since the Ally launched: controller settings and calibration, Armoury Crate and Command Center interface changes, a 30W USB-C docking compatibility update, driver updates, and other changes. Those are updates reported at that time, not a statement of the Ally’s current software status.
