On May 21, 2022, ASUS teased China and global launches for the ROG Phone 6 series and confirmed it would use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It was a launch teaser, not the full product announcement: pricing, complete specifications and a final launch date had not yet been disclosed. ASUS unveiled the phones globally on July 5, 2022.
What ASUS announced in May 2022
ASUS signaled the international launch through its global Instagram presence and identified a Tencent Games edition for China on its Chinese Weibo account, according to GizmoChina’s May 21, 2022 report. The announcement established that the series was intended for both China and global markets and would use Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It did not amount to a full launch or confirm retail availability in every country.
At the time, ASUS had not published the complete specification sheet, pricing or a final launch schedule. The report described the device as “coming soon.” ASUS subsequently scheduled a virtual ROG Phone 6: For Those Who Dare event for July 5, 2022, at 20:00 China Standard Time (ASUS event announcement).
China Tencent edition and global model
The China version was described as a Tencent Games edition. ROG phones sold in China had historically used Tencent branding, and the May report said the edition could have different branding and slightly different software from the global model. That distinction matters to importers: the ROG Phone 6 name alone does not establish that two regional versions have the same firmware, services or network compatibility.

Before buying an imported unit, confirm its exact model number and region. Check supported LTE and 5G bands with your carrier, as ASUS warns that compatibility varies by region on its global specification page. Also establish which firmware is installed, whether Google Play and Google Mobile Services are supported, what languages and updates are available, and where warranty service applies. Carrier features such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and carrier aggregation can also depend on the exact model and local network. Verify the charger and plug standard, and do not assume Tencent-branded software can be removed.
Why Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mattered
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was Qualcomm’s flagship mobile platform for 2022. Its product brief lists CPU speeds up to 3.2 GHz, Adreno graphics, 5G and Wi-Fi 6/6E support (Qualcomm product brief). Qualcomm also claimed a 10% CPU-performance increase, 10% higher GPU clock speeds and up to 30% better CPU power efficiency compared with the preceding platform (Qualcomm’s July 2022 discussion of the platform).

Those are platform-level figures, not guarantees that a ROG Phone 6 will deliver a particular frame rate or 30% longer battery life. Real gaming results depend on the game, settings, temperature, software and cooling conditions. ASUS and GizmoChina described the phone as the world’s first gaming smartphone with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; that claim is specifically about gaming phones, not necessarily the first smartphone of any type to reach consumers with the chip.
What the final ROG Phone 6 series delivered
ASUS globally unveiled the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro on July 5, 2022, closing the loop on the May teaser (ASUS launch announcement). Both were built around Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and the GameCool 6 thermal system. ASUS described the series as supporting up to 18 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512 GB of storage; that 18 GB maximum is a series-level figure, associated with the Pro configuration, rather than the maximum for every standard ROG Phone 6.

Gaming features and their trade-offs
The ROG Phone 6’s gaming identity came from more than its processor. ASUS paired the high-refresh display with AirTrigger controls, Armoury Crate performance-management software, front-facing stereo speakers, a 6000 mAh battery and support for gaming accessories. GameCool 6 used a centered CPU layout, a vapor chamber ASUS said was 30% larger, graphite sheets it said were 85% larger, 360-degree CPU cooling and boron nitride thermal compound. ASUS also offered the AeroActive Cooler 6 as an optional active-cooling accessory (ASUS product page).

These are ASUS’s design descriptions and claims, not independent measurements of sustained performance. ASUS said the cooling system could reduce CPU temperature by up to 10°C under specified conditions; that figure should not be generalized to every game, room temperature or play session. The large chassis and accessory ecosystem suit extended gaming, but they add bulk and can make the phone less appealing to buyers seeking a compact everyday device. Gaming remains the design priority, so buyers focused on camera performance should weigh the camera hardware accordingly.

The ROG Phone 6 is a 2022 device, not a current-generation launch. Its launch-era specifications do not establish its present software-support status, current price, remaining stock, warranty coverage or condition. Check those details for the specific seller, region and unit; treat marketplace stock as potentially used, refurbished, imported or leftover inventory until confirmed. Used-device buyers should also inspect battery condition and verify that any promised accessories are compatible with the exact model. The official product page and specification page identify the device and its hardware, but do not by themselves establish a current retail offer or support commitment.
