asuswsshellext64.dll Missing: Diagnose the ASUS Shell Extension

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

asuswsshellext64.dll is a legacy ASUS WebStorage shell-extension file, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or Explorer crashes while naming it, repair or remove the ASUS WebStorage software that installed it rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Identification What it means
File asuswsshellext64.dll
Associated software ASUS WebStorage, also called ASUS WebStorage Sync Agent
Type Explorer shell extension
64 in the name A 64-bit DLL architecture indicator
Windows component No. It is not supplied by Windows
Current version No single current version is established
Usual repair Uninstall unused WebStorage, or repair and reinstall it from ASUS

Older records place the file inside ASUS WebStorage folders such as C:Program Files (x86)ASUSASUS WebStorage rather than in C:WindowsSystem32. The file has also appeared in Explorer shell-icon-overlay registrations. Historical Microsoft reports document Explorer crashes where ASUSWSShellExt64.dll was listed as the faulting module, including an older build identified as version 1.1.0.27; that is not proof of a current version.

What asuswsshellext64.dll does

ASUS WebStorage used this DLL to add functions to Windows Explorer, such as shell integration and file-status overlays. Because Explorer loads shell extensions, a damaged or incompatible WebStorage component can affect Explorer itself even when the user is not actively opening the WebStorage application.

This is why the file may be reported when:

  • Windows starts
  • You open a folder
  • You right-click a file
  • Explorer repeatedly restarts
  • An older ASUS utility launches
  • You uninstall or update WebStorage incompletely

The file may be found on ASUS computers, but ASUS was also bundled with some computers made by other manufacturers, including Toshiba. The computer brand does not identify the file’s owner. The relevant question is whether ASUS WebStorage or WebStorage Sync Agent is installed.

First decide whether WebStorage is needed

If you no longer use ASUS WebStorage, removing the old shell extension is usually the safest and most effective fix. Restoring an obsolete DLL only preserves software you may not need.

If you still synchronize files through WebStorage, repair or reinstall the parent application instead. ASUS currently distributes newer WebStorage products, including WebStorage Sync, but its current downloads do not guarantee that this exact legacy DLL is included. For an older OEM-bundled installation, check the support downloads for your specific computer model.

Fix 1: Uninstall unused ASUS WebStorage

This is the recommended first step when the error appears after WebStorage was removed, updated, or partially damaged.

Windows 11

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for ASUS WebStorage, WebStorage Sync Agent, or a similarly named ASUS storage entry.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select the ASUS WebStorage entry.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart the computer.

If the program is not listed in Settings, open Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features. Select the ASUS WebStorage entry and choose Uninstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restarting, open several folders and check whether the message or Explorer crash has stopped. If it has, the stale or damaged shell extension was the cause.

If the uninstaller fails, restart Windows and try again. When Explorer crashes too quickly for normal use, boot Windows into Safe Mode, uninstall the ASUS entry there, and restart normally.

Microsoft’s documented Windows removal paths are described in its uninstall instructions.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall WebStorage if you still use it

A missing file can mean the installation package is incomplete, or that a dependency used by the shell extension is missing. Reinstalling the parent application replaces the application files and its registration together.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the ASUS WebStorage entry.
  3. Open its available options.
  4. If Modify, Change, or Repair appears, choose it first.
  5. Complete the repair and restart Windows.
  6. If repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the program.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Download the compatible installer from ASUS’s official WebStorage page or your computer model’s ASUS support page.
  9. Install it, then restart again.

The current ASUS WebStorage Sync support material identifies the Windows installer as WebStorageSyncAgent.exe and lists Windows 10 or later and .NET Framework 4.8 or later for the current client. Those requirements apply to the current client, not necessarily to an old copy of asuswsshellext64.dll.

If the newest client does not restore the old Explorer integration, do not search for the DLL by itself. The current product may no longer use that legacy shell extension. In that case, leave the old software removed and use the current client only if it meets your needs.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed a file from an otherwise legitimate installation. Quarantine is possible, but it does not prove that the file was safe.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections for an ASUS WebStorage path.
  5. Expand the detection to view its location and details.
  6. Restore the file only if it came from a legitimate ASUS installation and the path and publisher metadata are trustworthy.
  7. Run a full scan after reviewing the event.

Do not restore a copy found in Downloads, %TEMP%, an unexpected %AppData% folder, or C:WindowsSystem32 merely because its filename matches. Microsoft warns that allowing a malicious file can put the computer at risk. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When in doubt, keep the file quarantined, uninstall WebStorage, and reinstall the application from ASUS instead.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s location and metadata

A genuine application DLL should normally be inside the folder of the application that installed it. Historical reports have placed this file in ASUS WebStorage directories and other ASUS-related application folders, not in the Windows system directory.

To inspect a file:

  1. Right-click the error’s shortcut or the application entry if one is available.
  2. Choose Open file location.
  3. Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
  4. Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
  5. Note the complete folder path, file description, product information, and signer if present.
  6. Scan the file with Windows Security.

Public metadata has associated older records with eCareme Technologies, Inc. and newer records with ASUS Cloud Corporation. That attribution is not a current ASUS DLL manifest, so publisher text alone is not enough to establish authenticity.

If the file is in an unexpected location, do not copy it into a system folder. Remove the questionable installation and reinstall the parent ASUS software from an official source.

Fix 5: Disable the shell extension when Explorer keeps crashing

If Explorer crashes repeatedly, the shell extension may be the immediate trigger even if the file exists. Historical Microsoft cases recorded explorer.exe crashes with ASUSWSShellExt64.dll as the faulting module.

Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can show Explorer shell extensions.

  1. Download Autoruns from Microsoft Sysinternals.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive.
  3. Run the appropriate Autoruns executable as administrator.
  4. Select the Explorer tab.
  5. Search for ASUSWSShellExt64.dll, ASUS WebStorage, or WebStorage Sync.
  6. Clear the checkbox for the ASUS entry to disable it.
  7. Restart Explorer or restart Windows.
  8. Uninstall or reinstall WebStorage after Explorer is stable.

Disabling the entry is a diagnostic and temporary measure, not a replacement for removing damaged software. If Explorer becomes stable after the entry is disabled, WebStorage or its shell integration is strongly implicated.

Microsoft documents Autoruns and its Explorer entries in the Autoruns reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Missing file versus missing dependency

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Use this distinction:

  • If the file is absent from its former ASUS folder, the installation is incomplete or removed.
  • If the file exists but Windows still cannot load it, a dependency, registration, or compatibility problem may be involved.
  • If Explorer crashes and the file is named as the faulting module, the shell extension itself may be incompatible or corrupted.
  • If WebStorage was already removed, the remaining problem is probably an orphaned registration.

Reinstalling the parent ASUS package is safer than guessing which Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET component to add. There is no verified evidence that this legacy DLL specifically requires a particular Microsoft redistributable.

Windows component repair: use only for wider system problems

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party ASUS application DLL, so they are not the primary fix for this error.

Use them when Windows itself is unstable, other Windows files are also failing, or system corruption is suspected.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the affected application or Explorer.

Microsoft provides the command sequence in its System File Checker instructions.

Repeatedly running these commands without checking what changed will not replace a missing ASUS package. If manually hunting through Windows components is becoming the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling ASUS WebStorage remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Drivers and Windows Features are usually unrelated

asuswsshellext64.dll is an Explorer shell extension, not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.

Only check drivers if the computer has broader hardware or display problems:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click a device and choose Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Do not enable random Windows Features merely because an error mentions a DLL. Adding DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET without evidence can add unnecessary software and still leave the broken ASUS registration in place.

If identifying stale drivers manually means opening many device categories and guessing which version is relevant, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Drivers remain secondary here because this DLL belongs to ASUS WebStorage, not a device driver.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL by itself

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong build, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean copy may not fix the missing dependency or stale Explorer registration that caused the message.

Use ASUS’s official WebStorage download page or the ASUS support page for the exact computer model. If the software is no longer needed, uninstall it instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into System32

The file is not a Windows system component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 can create an incorrect registration and does not repair the ASUS installation.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic solution

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry points. Microsoft documents it as a registration tool, but there is no reliable public verification that every build of this shell-extension DLL supports DllRegisterServer.

Only use a vendor-provided registration command when ASUS documentation for that specific package instructs you to do so. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the parent application.

If the error remains after removal

An error that persists after WebStorage is gone usually indicates an orphaned startup item, shell-extension registration, scheduled task, or shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that ASUS WebStorage is absent from Installed apps and Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Use Autoruns as administrator.
  4. Check the Explorer, Logon, and Scheduled Tasks tabs.
  5. Disable entries that clearly reference ASUS WebStorage or the missing DLL.
  6. Restart and test again.
  7. Remove only entries you can confidently associate with the uninstalled ASUS software.

If the error began immediately after an installation, update, or removal and the cleanup steps do not help, System Restore is a fallback. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, choose a restore point from before the change, and follow the wizard. System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its System Restore guidance.

FAQ

Is asuswsshellext64.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with ASUS WebStorage and its Explorer integration. Windows does not require it for normal operation.

Do I need it if I do not use ASUS WebStorage?

Usually not. Uninstalling the unused ASUS WebStorage or WebStorage Sync Agent is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

Does 64 mean I need 64-bit Windows?

It identifies the DLL as a 64-bit component. On 64-bit Windows, it is intended for 64-bit Explorer integration. It does not mean that every application on the computer must be 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Explorer crash instead of only showing a missing-file message?

Explorer loads shell extensions. A damaged, incompatible, or stale ASUS WebStorage extension can therefore cause explorer.exe to crash when folders or file menus are opened.

Will SFC or DISM restore the file?

Normally no. They repair Windows components, not ASUS application files. Reinstall WebStorage or remove its orphaned registration.

What if the DLL exists but Windows still says it is missing?

A dependency may be missing, or the registration may point to an invalid path. Verify the location, inspect the installation, and repair or reinstall WebStorage rather than copying another DLL into a system folder.
