Dig around Y=15 in the Nether for the best average chance described by Minecraft’s official ancient-debris guidance. The article, published March 25, 2021, says there is no guarantee of finding debris at that level; a tunnel can pass through the target area without uncovering any.

Where can ancient debris generate?
Minecraft’s guidance describes up to two veins per chunk: one in the band from Y=8 to Y=22, and another from Y=8 to Y=119. The wider range is why ancient debris can occur away from Y=15, even though Y=15 is the stated peak in average chance.
Ancient debris is buried rather than exposed to air, so finding it means digging through Netherrack. The official article does not compare mining methods or establish that one tunnel pattern is more efficient than another.

How do you mine ancient debris and get Netherite?
- Go to the Nether and mine for ancient debris, targeting Y=15.
- Use a diamond pickaxe to mine the block successfully.
- Process the debris into Netherite scrap, then combine scrap and gold ingots to make Netherite ingots, as described in Minecraft’s Nether Update announcement.
You do not mine a Netherite ore block: ancient debris is the material used to obtain Netherite.
