Atari 800XL vs. Atari 400 Mini: Which Retro Atari Is Right for You?

Choose the Atari 800XL recreation if you want to type on a full-size keyboard, use Atari BASIC, or play compatible original cartridges. Choose the Atari 400 Mini if you want a compact device Atari currently lists as available, with a joystick and 25 built-in games. The timing matters: Atari lists the 800XL for preorder with estimated shipping in late April 2027, while the Mini is listed as available now. These are different kinds of retro Atari: a recreated home computer and a small emulation device.

At a glance: the main differences

Feature Atari 800XL recreation Atari 400 Mini

Availability and listed price Atari lists a $219.99 preorder and estimates shipping in late April 2027. This is a stated estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date. Atari lists it as available and displays $83.99, reduced from $119.99. Price and stock can change.

Choose the 800XL if you want a computer, not just a game player

Typing and BASIC are central to the experience

The 800XL recreation is the fit for someone who wants to sit at a keyboard and use an Atari as a computer. It has a full-size mechanical keyboard and built-in Atari BASIC, making it the more natural choice for typing and programming as well as games. The Mini can accept a standard PC keyboard over USB, but that is an accessory rather than a built-in typing keyboard.

You want to use original cartridges

The 800XL has a working cartridge slot. Atari says it supports most Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE cartridges—not every cartridge—so check compatibility for a particular title before buying. The Mini’s product page describes loading compatible games from USB and does not list a cartridge slot.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

You want Atari’s broader image-loading options

Atari says the 800XL can load cartridge, disk, and cassette images from a USB flash drive. That is a broader set of explicitly named image types than the Mini’s product description, which says it supports compatible games from USB storage. Neither description means every image or file will work; compatibility still matters.

Choose the 400 Mini for a compact, ready-to-play setup

It is the option Atari currently lists as available

Atari’s product page lists the 400 Mini as available, with a displayed price of $83.99, reduced from $119.99. Those are page prices as of the product information accessed October 9, 2026, and may change. By comparison, Atari lists the 800XL recreation at $219.99 for preorder with estimated late-April-2027 shipping; the estimate may change.

It comes with the core connection accessories

The Mini package includes a CXStick joystick, HDMI cable, USB-C power cable, and quick-start manual. It does not include a power adapter, so plan to supply a compatible adapter. A standard PC keyboard can be connected through USB if you want keyboard input, but the Mini itself does not have the 800XL’s full-size working keyboard.

Its emulation scope reaches beyond the Atari 400

Atari describes the Mini as emulating the 8-bit Atari range from the 400 through the 130XE, as well as the Atari 5200. It is not a miniature working 800XL computer with a cartridge slot: its listed route for additional games is compatible software on USB storage.

  • Each offers four save slots per game.
  • Both support some form of USB-based loading for additional software, though the 800XL page specifically names cartridge, disk, and cassette images while the Mini page refers to compatible games.
  • Both include a joystick: THECXSTICK with eight buttons for the 800XL and a CXStick for the Mini.

Their rewind limits differ: Atari lists up to 40 seconds for the 800XL and up to 30 seconds for the Mini. These figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independently tested results.

Which one should you buy?

  • Pick the 800XL recreation if a real typing keyboard, built-in BASIC, or support for most original Atari 400, 800, XL, and XE cartridges is the deciding feature—and you can wait for the stated preorder window.
  • Pick the 400 Mini if you want Atari’s currently listed compact device, included joystick and HDMI cable, built-in games, and USB game loading without waiting for the 800XL’s estimated shipment.
  • Think carefully if you mainly want keyboard play on the Mini. Atari supports a standard USB keyboard, but it is an extra item and does not turn the Mini into a model with a built-in full-size keyboard or listed cartridge slot.

Before ordering, check Atari’s pages for the latest stock, price, shipping estimate, compatibility details, and final package contents.
