For buyers willing to tinker, the original AtGames Legends Pinball HD was the stronger prebuilt virtual-pinball platform in Sam Machkovech’s July 5, 2021 Ars Technica comparison. Its larger, sharper playfield, second screen and expansion options made it more capable than the Arcade1Up Williams Pinball cabinet he tested. The trade-off was a less straightforward setup and interface: families wanting a simple, ready-to-play machine could be happier with Arcade1Up. That is a verdict on the 2021 models, not a current head-to-head test or price comparison.
What the 2021 review actually recommends
Machkovech’s conclusion was qualified rather than universal: “This is the system you want in this price category, and if you were planning on modding whichever system you buy anyway, AtGames’ option starts you off on a better foot.” He favored AtGames for technically inclined owners who valued flexibility and were prepared to configure or expand the cabinet. He saw Arcade1Up as the simpler set-and-forget choice, particularly for families.
The comparison applies to the original Legends Pinball HD and the Arcade1Up Williams Pinball unit reviewed at the time. The review’s price discussion and hands-on judgments describe those specific 2021 products. They should not be treated as current prices or as a test of later AtGames models.
How the cabinets compared in the review
The following differences are the reviewer’s observations about the units he tested in 2021, not a current standardized test.

| Category | AtGames Legends Pinball HD tested | Arcade1Up Williams Pinball tested |
|---|---|---|
| Playfield | 32-inch, 1080p display | 24-inch, 720p display |
| Playfield surface | Glass cover | Plexiglass cover |
| Backglass | Separate LCD backglass | The review describes AtGames’ second LCD as an advantage; it does not establish an equivalent Arcade1Up screen specification. |
| Physical controls | Physical nudge buttons, alongside flipper and plunger controls | The review praised AtGames’ nudge buttons; it does not provide a directly comparable control specification here. |
| Platform and expansion | Connected platform with expansion options; reviewer also praised its stronger SoC and optional arcade-control suite. | The reviewer characterized its menus and default-game experience as simpler. |
| Sound and ease of use | The review’s main reservation was interface and setup friction. | The reviewer praised its sound, default games and menu simplicity. |
The hardware advantages matter most if you notice playfield size, resolution, surface and control options. They do not automatically make the AtGames cabinet the better choice for someone who mainly wants to switch on a machine and play.
What setup and ownership may feel like
AtGames: more room to customize
The review praised the connected platform and expandability, but found that menus and setup could take extra effort. In particular, turning the cabinet into an easy home-arcade showcase could require more configuration when a PC was involved. The platform’s flexibility is therefore both its appeal and its cost in time: it suits owners who want to work on the setup, not necessarily those who expect every feature to be effortless out of the box.

- Rivals & chaos: battle rival trainers and Team Rocket (Giovanni); Meowth Balloon toy and Premium Edition electromagnet add arena chaos.

Arcade1Up: a simpler default experience
Machkovech found Arcade1Up’s menus and default-game experience easier to approach and praised its sound. For a household where several people want to play without learning a more involved platform, that simplicity may outweigh AtGames’ display and expansion advantages. This is the reviewer’s judgment about the cabinets he tested, not a guarantee about every buyer’s experience.
What the current Legends Pinball HD page lists
AtGames’ current product page lists the Legends Pinball HD with 22 built-in licensed arcade pinball games, a 32-inch HD playfield, a 15.6-inch LCD backglass and 60FPS gameplay. It also lists a physical plunger and flippers, nudge controls, tactile feedback and accelerometers. The page gives approximate dimensions of 60 × 44 × 22 inches. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements, and AtGames warns that specifications can change. Confirm the exact cabinet and shipping configuration before relying on dimensions. AtGames Legends Pinball HD specifications

The current product-page details describe the HD listing; they do not turn the 2021 comparison into a review of newer hardware. AtGames now has distinct HD, HDP, Micro HD and 4KP families, so identify the exact model and package rather than assuming that similarly named products share the same features or accessories.

Video Input Backglass Switchboard (VIBS)
AtGames describes VIBS as an accessory for connecting a pinball-engine-enabled external PC to the Legends Pinball backglass display. That is a specific use case: it enables the PC’s output on the backglass; check the exact cabinet version, accessory compatibility and package contents before buying. AtGames lists Micro VIBS separately, so do not assume the same accessory fits every model. AtGames accessories

Arcade Control Panel HD
AtGames also lists an Arcade Control Panel HD for the HD ecosystem. It is an expansion option for owners interested in arcade-style controls, not a reason to assume the panel is included with a cabinet. Verify compatibility and what is in the box for the exact SKU.
Digital tables and newer device families
AtGames’ release notes document continuing digital table releases for multiple generations, with purchase channels that vary by device: some entries identify availability through the AtGames E-Store for Legends HD, while newer devices may support on-device purchases. The notes identify 1080 × 1920 resolution for HD/HDP and 2160 × 3840 for 4K in relevant entries, with title-specific exceptions possible. That establishes distinct device families and ongoing content, not universal compatibility across them. In particular, 4KP Zen Studios content should not be assumed to run on the original HD cabinet without explicit compatibility information. Quick Recap
Who should choose the original HD—and who should look elsewhere?
- Consider the HD if: the larger playfield and second screen appeal to you, you value physical controls and expansion, and you are comfortable spending time on setup.
- Consider a simpler alternative if: your priority is an uncomplicated, family-friendly default experience and you do not expect to customize the cabinet. That was the role the reviewer saw for Arcade1Up in his 2021 comparison.
- Pause before buying if: your decision depends on a current sale price, a specific included game pack, an accessory, or compatibility with a newer digital table. The 2021 review does not establish today’s prices or bundles; verify the exact model, seller, stock, shipping, warranty, return terms and package contents with the current listing.
