The exact folder depends on Windows architecture, the AMD package, the GPU generation, and whether the computer is an OEM laptop or desktop. The Driver Store is the authoritative location for installed driver packages; the copy in System32 is not proof that Windows itself supplied the file.

Do not judge a replacement by its file size or version. AMD packages contain different builds for different hardware and Windows releases, and files from separate driver generations should not be mixed.

Fix 1: Install the correct AMD graphics driver
This is the safest and most likely fix because atig6pxx.dll is part of a coordinated graphics-driver package.
Identify the computer and GPU
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the full AMD Radeon model.
- Right-click the adapter, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider, date, and version.
Also determine whether the system is:
- An AMD laptop from a manufacturer such as Lenovo, Dell, HP, ASUS, or Acer
- A prebuilt desktop
- A custom desktop with separately installed AMD hardware
For a laptop or prebuilt computer, check the manufacturer’s support page first. OEM drivers can include power-management, hybrid-graphics, docking, and display customizations that a generic AMD package may not include.

For a custom desktop, use AMD’s official Drivers and Support page. Select the exact Radeon product and Windows version rather than downloading a package based only on the word “Radeon.”
Reinstall the driver
- Save open work and close games and graphics applications.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find AMD Software.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Install the OEM driver or the matching AMD package.
- Restart again.
- Launch the application that reported the error.
If the AMD installer offers Factory Reset, use it when a normal reinstall has already failed or an update appears to have left mixed files behind. The option removes older AMD software before installing the selected package. Save custom Radeon settings first because a reset can remove them.
A successful repair usually means the application starts normally, the error no longer appears, and Device Manager shows the expected AMD adapter without a warning icon. If the installer fails, try the OEM package, temporarily disconnect a dock, check available disk space, and review third-party antivirus logs.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be tedious, especially on hybrid laptops with several display packages. Fix 2: Roll back a driver that introduced the problem
If the error started immediately after an AMD update, the newest package may be incompatible with the application, dock, or older Radeon hardware.
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the AMD Radeon adapter.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver stored. In that case, download the previous driver package from the computer manufacturer or AMD and install it after removing the current AMD Software package.
Rollback is particularly relevant to LoadLibrary failed with error 87, which can occur when an AMD Catalyst or Radeon driver does not interact correctly with an application or system configuration. Autodesk documents updating, using a certified driver, or reverting to an earlier driver for this type of failure.
Fix 3: Repair only the affected application
When one program fails but games and other OpenGL applications work, the AMD installation may be healthy. The application could have a damaged installation, incompatible rendering setting, or outdated OpenGL integration.

For a game
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s settings or library menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to replace damaged game files.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
Do not copy atig6pxx.dll into the game directory. That can make Windows load an incompatible copy instead of the driver installed for the GPU.
For CAD or OpenGL software
Look in the application’s graphics, display, or performance settings for a software OpenGL, software rendering, or compatibility mode. Enable it temporarily and restart the program.
If the program works in software rendering, that points toward a graphics-driver or application-rendering compatibility issue rather than proof that the DLL itself is defective. Update or roll back the AMD driver, then test hardware acceleration again.
For a persistent single-application failure:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu and select Uninstall, or use its own maintenance utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current version from the developer’s official installer.
- Apply any application updates.
- Test before restoring custom plugins or graphics settings.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate driver file, but an antivirus alert is not automatically a false positive.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
atig6pxx.dll. - Check its original path, detection name, and action.
- Compare the path with the installed AMD driver package.
- If it is clearly the signed AMD file from that package, follow your security software’s review process before restoring it.
- Reinstall the AMD driver if the file is missing or the detection remains uncertain.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A malicious file can use the same filename. If protection history identifies a genuine threat, leave it quarantined and install a fresh official driver package instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows component corruption can interfere with driver installation and application startup. These commands repair Windows-protected components; they are not guaranteed to restore an AMD DLL that is absent from the AMD driver package.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or retest the AMD driver.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, move on to AMD driver repair rather than repeatedly running the same scan. If it cannot complete, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again from an administrator Command Prompt.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed rarely helps when the missing file belongs to AMD. Fix 6: Check architecture and bad-image errors
A 0xc000007b message does not prove that atig6pxx.dll is the cause. It can indicate that Windows loaded an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit component, or that another dependency is damaged.
Do not mix DLLs from different packages. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or a file from an unrelated driver release into an application folder. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files despite its historical name, while SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit compatibility files.
To check the application architecture, consult its official documentation or installer. To inspect the file currently present:

- Browse to the reported file path.
- Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Open Details and Digital Signatures, if available.
- Confirm that the file belongs to the AMD package and has not been replaced by a downloaded copy.
If the application is old and 32-bit, it may expose an incompatibility that newer 64-bit software does not. Reinstalling the application and the correct AMD package together is safer than trying to assemble individual DLLs.

The error may occur only while using a docking station, Remote Desktop, or a laptop’s switchable graphics.
- Shut down the affected application.
- Disconnect the dock and external displays.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application on the laptop’s built-in display.
- If it works, update the dock firmware and the laptop’s OEM graphics driver.
- Test again while docked.
Remote Desktop can use a different rendering path from a local session. If the program fails only through Remote Desktop, test it locally before replacing files. A failure limited to one session type is evidence of a rendering or driver interaction, not confirmation that the DLL is missing.

Renaming the System32 copy can be a narrow diagnostic workaround for some OpenGL and LoadLibrary conflicts, including scenarios involving AutoCAD, eDrawings, docking, or remote sessions. It is not a general repair and can stop applications that require AMD OpenGL support.
Only use it after recording the full path and creating a restore point or backup:

- Browse to the reported
atig6pxx.dll. - Right-click it, choose Rename, and change the name to
atig6pxx.dll.bak. - Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
- If the problem worsens, restore the original filename or reinstall the AMD driver.
Do not delete the file. If renaming makes the application work, leave it as a temporary finding and pursue a compatible OEM or AMD driver instead.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A graphics-driver runtime DLL is not normally registered that way.
Running this command:
regsvr32 atig6pxx.dll
may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different registration command. It means registration is the wrong repair path. Restore the coordinated AMD driver package instead.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore only if the failure began after a known driver or system change and a restore point predates it.

rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Use Scan for affected programs.
- Review the listed changes.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore can roll back applications, settings, drivers, and system state. It does not replace a proper long-term driver installation, so install the correct OEM or AMD package afterward if needed.

Safe sources and information to collect
Never download atig6pxx.dll from a random DLL website. The file may be unsigned, the wrong architecture, malware-modified, or incompatible with the other AMD components. It may also fail to fix the underlying driver installation.
Use the computer manufacturer’s support page for OEM systems or AMD’s official Drivers and Support page for compatible packages. Do not copy a DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder as a substitute for driver installation.
If the issue remains, record:
- The exact application or game
- The complete error text and code
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
- AMD GPU model
- AMD driver version
- Full path shown for
