diskcopy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file associated with the historical Windows DiskCopy shell extension. If it is missing on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the most likely cause is an old MS-DOS media utility expecting a legacy component that modern Windows no longer provides.

Unable to open C:windowssystem32diskcopy.dll: [0x0000007E]
The specified module could not be found.
Older Rufus releases and other vendor utilities that create MS-DOS bootable media are the strongest documented modern cause. If the message appears while creating a bootable USB, repairing Windows may not help because the application is expecting a file intentionally removed from newer Windows.

If the warning appears when launching another program, find the owning executable:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps and disable unfamiliar entries one at a time.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for old disk, firmware, recovery or DOS-media utilities.
- Right-click the failing shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Note the program name and publisher before changing files.
If the message appears at startup without an obvious failure, also inspect Task Scheduler. Press Win + R, enter taskschd.msc, and review Task Scheduler Library for an obsolete utility that launches at logon.
Fix 1: Update or replace the old MS-DOS media utility
This is the safest and most likely fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

For Rufus or a similar USB tool
- Close the failing utility.
- Download the current release from the developer’s official source.
- Run the updated version.
- Insert the USB drive.
- Select the USB device and choose the supported FreeDOS or MS-DOS workflow offered by the current program.
- If the utility asks to download a Microsoft file, allow that process to complete through the application.
- Recreate the bootable drive.
Do not copy a random diskcopy.dll into the utility’s folder. Current versions may obtain the required Microsoft material through their supported workflow and handle the legacy image format themselves.
If the updated utility still displays the same error:
- Uninstall the old release through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current release from the vendor.
- Run it once with administrator rights by right-clicking its shortcut and choosing Run as administrator.
- Try the media-creation process again.
If the tool is no longer maintained, replace it with a current utility that supports FreeDOS or another documented boot-media method. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX or .NET is not a reasonable first fix because diskcopy.dll is not one of those runtime components.
Fix 2: Repair Windows on an older installation
On Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1, diskcopy.dll may be a legitimate protected Windows file. If it should exist on that installation but is missing or damaged, repair Windows rather than using a DLL download site.
On supported Windows versions, open an administrator Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the program that reported the error.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. You can review details in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Repeating SFC without checking whether DISM repaired the component store usually wastes time. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for system problems and showing what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the program that actually owns the DLL.
Repair from Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows will not boot normally:
- Start from Windows Recovery Environment.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Identify the Windows drive letter. In recovery mode it may not be
C:. - Replace
D:below with the correct Windows volume. - Run:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
- Close Command Prompt.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
For older Windows versions, use matching original installation media or a supported repair source. Do not use a Windows 7 or Vista copy of the file to repair Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 3: Use System Restore
System Restore is useful when the error began after an update, cleanup utility, failed upgrade or system change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs while normally leaving personal files alone. Afterward, test the original application before reinstalling unrelated runtimes.
Fix 4: Reinstall the program that requested the file
If the error belongs to a current third-party application rather than Windows itself, that application is the owner and its official installer is the correct source.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the developer’s official source.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Start the program again.
If the application offers Repair or Modify, use that before uninstalling:

- Select the application.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair when offered.
- Restart and test it.
If the application is a game, use its launcher’s Verify files or Repair command only when the launcher owns the file. There is no reliable basis for treating diskcopy.dll as a normal dependency of modern games.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate file, or it can correctly block a fake DLL placed beside an application.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
diskcopy.dll. - Check the detected path, publisher and signature information.
- Do not restore the file if the path is a random download folder, a temporary folder or an unfamiliar application directory.
- If the file is a verified Microsoft-signed original from the same Windows installation, restore it only after confirming the detection is a false positive.
- Run a Full scan afterward.
If you cannot verify the file, leave it quarantined and repair Windows or reinstall the owning utility. A missing file caused by malware damage should not be replaced with an unverified copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
The historical file existed in different 32-bit and 64-bit variants. A matching build matters more than the filename.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is the native system directory.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system components.
Do not automatically copy the same DLL into both folders. A 32-bit file is not a substitute for a 64-bit system component, and a file from another Windows release may require incompatible dependencies.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that diskcopy.dll itself is present but one of its dependencies cannot load. Check the application’s own logs and confirm whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit. Installing the correct application build or repairing Windows is safer than guessing which DLL is missing.
If the problem occurs with hardware or a bootable-media utility, update the utility first. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and identify updates when driver hunting is the problem; its full version installs the drivers, but diskcopy.dll itself is not a hardware driver and driver installation is not the primary repair.
What not to do
Do not download diskcopy.dll from a random DLL site
An arbitrary download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build or the wrong architecture. It may also fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or an old application that expects a component removed from Windows 10.

Do not copy it into both System32 and SysWOW64
That can create architecture mismatches and makes later diagnosis harder. The correct location depends on the Windows release and the application that loads the file.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 only helps DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool, and running:
regsvr32 diskcopy.dll
will normally fail or accomplish nothing useful for this legacy component.

Frequently asked questions
Is diskcopy.dll a real Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows DiskCopy and the historical Disk Copy shell extension. Older Windows versions placed it under %SystemRoot%System32.
Does Windows 10 include diskcopy.dll?
Windows 10 removed the legacy component from the core operating system. An old MS-DOS-media utility may therefore fail even though Windows itself is working normally.
Does Windows 11 include it?
Do not assume that diskcopy.dll is a normal Windows 11 system file. If an old program requests it, update or replace that program instead of forcing a legacy DLL into Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I restore it from another computer?
Not safely unless the source is the same Windows release, edition, architecture and servicing state, and the file’s authenticity is verified. Matching Windows installation media or the component store is safer.
Why does error 0x0000007E say the module cannot be found?
The requested file may be absent, but the message can also refer to a dependency that cannot be loaded. Identify the calling program before replacing anything.
What if every repair fails?
Check the application’s architecture, review its logs, inspect antivirus quarantine, use matching Windows installation media, try System Restore, and replace the obsolete application. If the program still expects diskcopy.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the durable fix is usually a supported version of that program rather than a copied DLL.
