The errors you may see
Windows or an application may report:
- “The program can’t start because atiumd6a.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because atiumd6a.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading atiumd6a.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because atiumd6a.dll was not found.”
- A game, browser, or video application crash report naming
atiumd6a.dllas the faulting module.
The 60-second answer
atiumd6a.dll is an AMD/ATI Radeon graphics-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime. The safest fix is to identify your graphics card, download the matching driver from AMD’s official support page, and reinstall it.
Do not download a loose copy of atiumd6a.dll, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 against it. Those actions can install the wrong architecture or version while leaving the damaged Radeon driver untouched.
If the message is a crash report rather than a missing-file dialog, the file may already be present. In that case, the Radeon driver, an application using hardware acceleration, or the graphics hardware itself may be failing.
What atiumd6a.dll is
atiumd6a.dll is associated with the Radeon Video Acceleration Universal Driver. It is a user-mode AMD graphics and video-acceleration component used by applications that communicate with the Radeon driver stack.

It is not:
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX redistributable
- A .NET component
- A general-purpose Windows system library
- A file that should be downloaded separately
Compatible AMD display-driver packages can place related files such as atiumd64.dll, atiumdva.dll, atidxx32.dll, and atidxx64.dll on the system. The exact files depend on the GPU, Windows version, driver generation, and package architecture.
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the file may appear in:
C:WindowsSystem32
It may also be inside the Windows Driver Store, under a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
The name System32 does not mean that every file there is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, it commonly contains 64-bit system and driver binaries. SysWOW64 is generally used for 32-bit binaries. Confirm the architecture from the file’s Properties or the installed driver package rather than guessing from the folder name.
First determine which problem you have
There are two different situations.
A missing or unavailable driver file
If Windows shows a startup dialog saying that atiumd6a.dll is missing or was not found, the AMD driver may be incomplete, removed, quarantined, or incorrectly installed. Reinstalling the complete driver package is the primary repair.
A crash naming the DLL
If the file appears as a faulting module in an application crash report, it may not be missing at all. It could indicate:
- A damaged or incompatible Radeon driver
- A recent driver regression
- An application hardware-acceleration problem
- A missing dependency of the AMD driver
- Overheating, overclocking, failing graphics hardware, or faulty memory
A faulting-module name alone does not prove that replacing the DLL will fix the crash.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct AMD Radeon driver
This is the best first repair for both missing-file errors and many graphics crashes.
1. Identify the graphics card
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact AMD Radeon model.
- If you see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is not currently using the normal AMD driver.
- If the adapter has a warning icon, double-click it and read the Device status message.
For a laptop, note the computer manufacturer and model as well. Some laptops require a customized driver from the manufacturer rather than the newest general AMD package.
2. Download the matching package
Use AMD’s official Drivers and Support page and select the exact Radeon model and Windows version. AMD’s current driver is not universal: an older ATI or Radeon card may require a legacy package, and a laptop may need its manufacturer’s package.
Do not choose a driver based only on the atiumd6a.dll version shown on a third-party inventory page. Driver versions vary by GPU, operating system, architecture, and OEM package.
3. Install it cleanly
- Close games, browsers, launchers, recording software, and other graphics applications.
- Run the AMD installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Open Additional Options if shown.
- Choose Factory Reset when available.
- If the installer offers Clean Install instead, select that option.
- Continue the installation.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not insist on it.
- Launch the affected application again.
AMD’s Factory Reset removes previous AMD Software packages before installing the selected package. Older installers may use the term Clean Install.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart.
- Reinstall the matching AMD driver if Windows still uses a basic or broken display driver.
When this works, Device Manager should show the Radeon adapter without a warning icon, and the application should stop reporting the missing file. You can check the installed package through the AMD Software application or the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab.
Manually comparing driver packages, GPU models, and old release branches is tedious, especially on systems with several stale drivers. It is optional, and the official AMD package remains the correct source for a GPU-specific repair.

Use this when the normal installer fails, repeatedly rolls back, or leaves the same error after reinstalling.

AMD Cleanup Utility removes AMD graphics and audio drivers and software. It does not remove AMD chipset drivers.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support site.
- Save the utility rather than opening it from an unknown download prompt.
- Close open applications.
- Run
amdcleanuputility.exe. - Allow it to restart the computer into Safe Mode when prompted.
- Confirm that you want to remove the AMD graphics software.
- Wait for the cleanup to finish. The display may change resolution or flicker.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Install the correct AMD driver package.
- Restart once more.
If the utility cannot complete in normal Windows, accept its Safe Mode restart. If it still fails, disconnect unnecessary displays and remove third-party GPU overclocking tools before trying again.
A successful cleanup followed by installation should restore the AMD display adapter and remove the missing-file message. If Windows returns to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the driver did not install correctly or the package does not support that GPU and Windows version.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Update replaced the driver
Windows Update can replace a manufacturer package or leave an update pending while the AMD installer is running.
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Install all pending updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and version.
- Reinstall the correct AMD package after Windows finishes updating.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, try Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that button is available. If rollback is unavailable, install the previous known-good compatible package from AMD’s support archive.

Security software can quarantine a driver file. Do not immediately create an exclusion or restore the file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
atiumd6a.dll. - Check its original path and detection details.
- Verify that it came from the official AMD driver installation and has a valid digital signature.
- If the detection is demonstrably false, use Actions → Restore or Allow on device as appropriate.
- Reinstall the complete AMD driver package afterward.
If the file came from a game folder, temporary folder, or unknown download, do not restore it merely because its name matches. Remove the suspicious copy and scan the computer.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other system files are failing
atiumd6a.dll is supplied by the AMD driver, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use these commands when Windows servicing, updates, or several unrelated system files are also failing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the AMD driver if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft’s DISM and SFC guidance explains that DISM repairs the Windows component source and SFC checks protected Windows files. These commands do not replace a missing AMD driver package.

Older ATI/Radeon cards may not support current AMD drivers. Use the exact GPU model in AMD’s product selector, including any legacy-driver section. For an OEM desktop or laptop, check the manufacturer’s support page for the driver intended for that model and Windows version.
Do not install a newer Radeon package for a different card simply because it contains a similarly named DLL. A mismatched package can leave the adapter unusable or cause additional crashes.
If no compatible driver exists for the installed Windows version, the practical choices are the manufacturer’s supported legacy driver, an earlier compatible Windows installation, or replacing unsupported hardware.

If atiumd6a.dll exists and the application still crashes:
- Install the latest compatible AMD driver.
- If the crash began after an update, try the previous compatible AMD driver.
- Disable hardware acceleration in the affected browser or application.
- Use the game launcher’s Verify files or Repair command.
- Update or reinstall the affected application.
- Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for display-driver errors.
- Remove GPU overclocks and monitor temperatures.
- Test for faulty RAM or failing graphics hardware if every driver version crashes.
If the message says that a module could not be found even though atiumd6a.dll is present, a dependency of that driver may be missing. The full crash report is more useful than copying another version of the named DLL.

Why regsvr32 and Windows Features are not the answer
Do not run:
regsvr32 atiumd6a.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Radeon runtime component is not repaired by registering it. The command may produce a “DllRegisterServer was not found” message or create the impression that a registry repair is needed.
Likewise, enabling a Windows Feature such as legacy DirectPlay does not install an AMD driver DLL. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET should only be repaired when the error specifically names one of those components.

Never copy a random DLL into Windows
Third-party DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file with missing dependencies. Even a genuine file may not match the rest of the installed Radeon package.
Do not copy arbitrary files into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place both 32-bit and 64-bit copies “just in case.” Use the complete AMD driver installer, Windows Update, or the computer manufacturer’s official support package.
FAQ
Is atiumd6a.dll safe?
The genuine file is an AMD/ATI Radeon driver component. Safety depends on its source, signature, and location. A file with the same name from an unknown folder is not automatically trustworthy.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this error alone. Those packages do not normally supply atiumd6a.dll. Reinstall the AMD graphics driver first.

Is the file always 64-bit?
Public records commonly identify 64-bit versions, but do not assume every package is identical. Verify the binary and driver package architecture.
What if the file is already in System32?
The file may be corrupt, mismatched, quarantined in another location, or unable to load because a dependency is missing. Reinstall the complete driver instead of replacing only the visible file.
What information should I provide to support?
Record the exact error text, application name, Radeon model, Windows version, AMD driver version, whether the file exists, and any Event Viewer or crash-report details. Also note whether the problem began after Windows Update, a graphics-driver update, or an application update.
