“The program can’t start because ativtmxx.dll is missing from your computer.”

“ativtmxx.dll was not found.”

“Error loading ativtmxx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

If Windows reports that ativtmxx.dll is missing, the immediate problem is usually an incomplete or incompatible old ATI graphics installation. ativtmxx.dll is associated with ATI Technologies’ ATI PSP Lib and is commonly identified as the ATI Pixel Shader Provider, not as a normal Windows component.

The 60-second answer

Do not download an isolated copy of ativtmxx.dll, copy it into System32, or start with regsvr32.

Instead:

  1. Identify the ATI Radeon, All-in-Wonder, VIVO, or capture hardware.
  2. Get the matching legacy Catalyst or WDM driver package from AMD Support or the computer manufacturer.
  3. Repair or reinstall the complete package.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. If the error concerns capture, TV input, overlay, or All-in-Wonder functions, install the matching WDM component as well.

AMD’s archived driver selections include Catalyst Software Suite, WDM Integrated Driver, and older ATI WDM Integrated Driver packages. The correct package depends on the card, Windows version, and system architecture.

What is ativtmxx.dll?

ativtmxx.dll is an old third-party ATI driver DLL. Public file metadata commonly describes it as ATI Pixel Shader Provider and associates it with ATI PSP Lib. Some databases use a conflicting description involving ATI Overlay Theater Mode, so that internal label should not be treated as definitive.

The file is connected with older ATI Radeon and Catalyst software, including systems using:

  • ATI Radeon display cards
  • ATI All-in-Wonder cards
  • ATI VIVO hardware
  • ATI WDM video-capture components
  • Older OEM computers with ATI graphics

It is not a standard Microsoft Windows DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or .NET assembly. A copy may nevertheless appear in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, an ATI setup directory, or a temporary driver-extraction folder. Its location alone does not make it a Microsoft file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Public metadata also contains records for different architectures and builds, but those records do not establish one universally correct version. Do not replace your copy with a random file simply because its filename matches.

What usually causes the error?

The most common causes are:

  • An interrupted Catalyst installation
  • Removing one ATI driver before installing another
  • Installing a modified or incompatible ATI driver
  • Installing the display driver without the required WDM component
  • Antivirus quarantine or cleanup
  • Restoring an old system image
  • Moving an old Windows installation to different hardware
  • A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
  • A damaged or partially extracted installer
  • Leftover ATI software attempting to start after the hardware was removed

An error mentioning the ATI driver CD usually means Windows is continuing an incomplete driver installation and cannot find the original installation source.

Fix 1: Identify the hardware before reinstalling anything

Installing a driver for the wrong Radeon model can leave the same error in place. Start by identifying what Windows believes is installed.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Record the exact ATI or Radeon model.
  5. Also inspect Sound, video and game controllers.
  6. Look for ATI capture, WDM, VIVO, or All-in-Wonder entries.
  7. Right-click a relevant device and choose Properties.
  8. Open the Details tab.
  9. Set Property to Hardware Ids.
  10. Copy the first value if the model name is unclear.

If the computer no longer contains ATI hardware, skip to the section about stale startup entries. An old program may still be requesting the DLL even though the card has been removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Windows architecture

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type under Device specifications.

You can also press Win+R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. Check System Type in the System Information window.

A 32-bit application may need 32-bit ATI components even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not mix files from separate Catalyst releases or copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder.

Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Catalyst package

This is the most likely solution when the error appeared after a driver change, failed installation, or system restore.

Use AMD’s official legacy-driver area and select the exact ATI Radeon or All-in-Wonder model. If the computer is an OEM system, check the manufacturer’s support page or recovery media first because OEM drivers may contain custom components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the package intended for the actual operating system and architecture. Depending on the hardware, the package may be called:

Rank #2
Microsoft Windows 11 PRO (Ingles) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB Flash Drive
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
  • Catalyst Software Suite
  • WDM Integrated Driver
  • ATI WDM Integrated Driver
  • WDM Driver Package

Perform a repair-style reinstall

  1. Disconnect from the internet temporarily if Windows keeps replacing the old driver automatically.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
  5. Remove old ATI Catalyst or ATI Multimedia entries if the uninstall entry is clearly related to the affected installation.
  6. Restart the computer when prompted.
  7. Run the correct downloaded ATI installer as administrator.
  8. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  9. Choose the full installation when available.
  10. Allow the display and related components to install.
  11. Restart Windows again.
  12. Reopen the affected application.

If the installer offers a repair option, use it before removing the entire package. If the installer fails, extract it to a simple folder such as C:ATI-Setup, then run the setup program from that folder as administrator.

If you use All-in-Wonder or VIVO hardware

A normal display-driver installation may not include every capture component required by the card. If the error began while using TV input, video capture, overlay, or All-in-Wonder software:

  1. Identify the exact card model.
  2. Return to AMD’s legacy product page.
  3. Select the matching Windows release.
  4. Download the separate WDM Integrated Driver when listed.
  5. Install it after the main Catalyst package.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the capture or overlay function again.

A display driver can appear to install successfully while the WDM portion remains absent. That is why reinstalling only a loose DLL usually does not solve this particular problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually comparing old driver branches and locating the exact package can be tedious, especially when several legacy ATI downloads look similar. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version repair installs are optional, and the official ATI or OEM package remains the definitive source for this legacy hardware.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

If ativtmxx.dll worked previously and then disappeared, security software may have quarantined it.

Windows Security

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Open Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving ativtmxx.dll.
  7. Expand the event and inspect the path, detection name, and source.

Do not restore a file merely because its name looks familiar. A malicious file can use a legitimate DLL name.

If the path points to a verified ATI installation and the driver package came from AMD or the computer manufacturer, reinstall the complete package instead of restoring only the quarantined file. If the file appeared in a temporary download folder, an unknown application directory, or an unexpected user profile path, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To scan the computer:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If the problem began after malware removal, verify the driver source and reinstall the complete package. Do not trust an isolated restored DLL.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

ativtmxx.dll is third-party software, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. SFC may not restore a file that was never part of the Windows component store. These commands are useful when the missing-DLL message appears alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, or damaged system files.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program again.

A message that DISM completed successfully means the Windows image repair finished. SFC may report that it found and repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair everything. None of those messages proves that the ATI DLL itself has been restored.

When repeatedly running DISM and SFC does not reveal what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing Windows problems that need attention; repairs are performed by the full version and are optional. For this specific ATI file, reinstalling the matching driver remains the definitive fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver change

System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a driver update, cleanup utility, or hardware change.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error appeared.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs associated with the selected restore point. It does not normally remove personal documents.

If no suitable restore point exists, return to the correct ATI package and perform a clean repair. If the computer became unstable after malware cleanup or a failed update, use Windows recovery options rather than copying individual DLL files.

Fix 6: Remove a stale ATI startup request

If the message appears on every startup but the computer no longer has ATI hardware, an old startup item or ATI utility may be requesting the file.

  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for ATI Catalyst, ATI Multimedia Center, or other ATI software.
  5. Uninstall only software you recognize as obsolete.
  6. Restart the computer.

Do not delete arbitrary registry values. First identify the executable or program that is making the DLL request. If you need deeper startup diagnostics, use a reputable Microsoft-supported administrative method and keep a backup before changing startup configuration.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not run this as a first repair:

regsvr32 ativtmxx.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A graphics-driver runtime DLL is not automatically a registrable COM control.

The command may produce:

  • “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
  • An architecture mismatch error
  • A misleading registration failure

Registering the file does not reinstall its dependent ATI components, driver configuration, services, or device associations. Use regsvr32 only if the original ATI installer documentation specifically requires registration for that exact component.

Why downloading the DLL alone is unsafe

Avoid DLL download sites and isolated copies offered in search results. A loose file may be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build
  • From a different Catalyst release
  • Missing required companion files
  • Modified or malicious
  • Incompatible with the application that loads it
  • Unable to repair the driver’s INF, registry settings, or device configuration

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can create mixed ATI versions and cause display or capture failures. The safe sources are AMD’s official legacy driver pages, the computer manufacturer’s recovery media, or the original ATI installation media.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility

ATI Catalyst and WDM packages were designed for older Windows releases. AMD’s archived pages document legacy packages for older Radeon products and older operating systems; they do not guarantee that every package works correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If the correct legacy installer refuses to run:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version if appropriate.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Run the installer again.

Compatibility mode cannot create support that the driver does not have. If the hardware is no longer needed, uninstalling obsolete ATI software may be safer. If it is essential, use a supported older Windows installation, an OEM-supported driver, or replacement hardware.

FAQ

Is ativtmxx.dll a Windows system file?

Usually no. It is associated with ATI Technologies software and old graphics or capture drivers. A copy in System32 may still be third-party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of ATI PSP Lib?

Public metadata associates ativtmxx.dll with ATI PSP Lib and describes it as ATI Pixel Shader Provider. Other databases use different internal labels, so the exact description is not fully settled.

Do I need Visual C++ or DirectX?

There is no reliable evidence that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET directly restores this ATI DLL. Repair the matching ATI package first.

Should I copy the file into the game folder?

Normally no. There is no reliable evidence that a specific modern game universally requires this file. If an old application needs it, repair the ATI software or the application’s original installation instead.

Why does Windows ask for an ATI driver CD?

The driver installation may be incomplete and still be looking for its original source files. Use the original media or the matching AMD or OEM package, then complete the installation and restart.

What if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?

That usually indicates corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible legacy binary. Verify the source, check 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility, and reinstall the correct package rather than replacing the file with an arbitrary copy.

What if the error remains after reinstalling Catalyst?

Confirm the Radeon model, install the separate WDM package if capture or All-in-Wonder features are involved, check whether an OEM driver is required, and remove stale ATI startup software. If the hardware is absent, disabling the obsolete startup entry may resolve the message.
