Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which program or game shows the error? Record its name and the exact message.
- When does it happen? Is it during application launch, installation, startup, or only in Event Viewer?
- Is the affected program 32-bit or 64-bit? Old Windows software is commonly 32-bit, even on a 64-bit PC.
- Does Event Viewer mention Perflib, AppleTalk, SFMCTRS, or an open procedure?
- Did the problem begin after an update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, migration, or restoration of an old system image?
- Does this PC actually run old AppleTalk or Services for Macintosh software?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsatkctrs.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, and its description is “Windows NT AppleTalk Perfmon Counter dll.” It is not normally a game runtime, Visual C++ library, DirectX file, .NET component, or hardware-driver DLL.
The file belongs to a legacy Windows performance-counter system associated with AppleTalk. On a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, a reference to it often points to an old application, migrated configuration, damaged performance-counter registration, or an obsolete Windows component rather than a missing file that should simply be downloaded.

What atkctrs.dll actually does
AppleTalk was a networking protocol used by older Apple computers and Windows networking components. Windows NT-family systems could support AppleTalk and Services for Macintosh, allowing older Windows servers to monitor or interact with AppleTalk workloads.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
atkctrs.dll supplied performance counters for that protocol. Performance Monitor could load the DLL and request counter data, rather than using it as a general-purpose library for ordinary applications.

- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
That distinction matters. A performance-counter provider is registered and loaded through Windows performance-counter infrastructure. It is not normally installed by a modern game, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or device driver.
Historically, Microsoft Windows installations from the Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP era could include this type of AppleTalk component. Current Windows versions may not ship or support the same legacy feature. Therefore, an old reference can remain even when the operating system no longer contains the component.
What the common messages mean
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because atkctrs.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because atkctrs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file atkctrs.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading atkctrs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find atkctrs.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in atkctrs.dll.”
A launch error means that a program or Windows component actively requested the file. It does not prove that the program legitimately needs AppleTalk.
An Event Viewer message is different. A historical Perflib event may say that the open procedure for the AppleTalk service in atkctrs.dll took too long. That indicates a performance-counter or service problem, not necessarily a missing DLL.
Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and retry
Start with the least disruptive repair.
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Launch the affected program and check whether the error returns.
Windows servicing updates can repair component registrations and replace damaged protected system files. They can also expose a deeper compatibility problem if an old program still expects AppleTalk.
If the error appears only after launching one old application, do not assume Windows Update will restore the dependency. Continue with the application repair steps below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Use Microsoft’s built-in repair sequence when the file should be part of the Windows installation or Event Viewer reports a system performance-counter failure.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses as a source for protected-file repairs. If the component store is damaged, running SFC first may leave it without a trustworthy repair source.
Run SFC after DISM
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the affected program.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. That is a strong indication that Windows system corruption was involved.
If SFC says it found no integrity violations, the problem is more likely to be an obsolete application reference, a performance-counter registration issue, or a file-specific compatibility problem.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the DISM command again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Check the exact executable and path named by the error.
- Continue to application repair or recovery if the error remains.
If DISM cannot find source files through Windows Update, it may require matching Windows installation media and a suitable /Source path. The source must correspond to the installed Windows release and edition. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or a downloaded copy of atkctrs.dll; that does not repair the component store.
When you want a guided way to identify broader Windows maintenance problems instead of repeatedly guessing through SFC and DISM, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention. Its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the specific old application that requested atkctrs.dll.
Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
If the message appears only when starting one application, repair that application before changing system folders.
Repair a Microsoft Store or packaged application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, the same screen may offer Reset. Resetting can remove application data and settings, so use it only after checking whether the program stores anything important locally.
Repair a traditional desktop program
For older desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similarly named option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If there is no repair option, reinstall the program from its original trusted installer or the vendor’s official installation media. Do not download atkctrs.dll from a DLL archive and place it beside the application. A missing file may be only the visible symptom of an incomplete installation, wrong component registration, or incompatible software.
If the program is an old server role or legacy Windows component, repair the complete role rather than copying only the counter DLL. On modern Windows, the correct answer may be replacing the obsolete dependency or running the software inside a supported legacy environment.
Check the program’s own launcher
Some older games and applications include a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Verify files options.
Use that feature if available:
- Open the game or application launcher.
- Open the program’s settings or library menu.
- Select Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Let the launcher replace damaged program files.
- Restart the launcher and test again.
There is no evidence that a current game normally requires AppleTalk performance counters. If only one old title reports atkctrs.dll, its installer, compatibility layer, or bundled legacy component is more suspicious than Windows itself.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may have removed a genuine system file, although the filename alone is not proof that a quarantined copy is safe.
To review Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
atkctrs.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its detected path and details.
Restore the file only when all of the following make sense:
- The path belongs to the expected Windows installation or trusted legacy program.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive.
- The file’s digital signature and surrounding installation context can be verified.
- A current security scan does not identify related threats.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. A malicious program can use a legitimate Windows filename. If the file was located in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar download directory, or beside an unknown executable, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

If Defender quarantines the file again, investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 5: Determine whether the error is only a Perflib event
If no application fails to start and the message appears only in Event Viewer, treat it as a performance-counter problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select System.
- Use Find and search for:
atkctrs.dllAppleTalkPerflibSFMCTRS- Open the event and record the source, event ID, and full message.
- Check whether the event happens during startup or only when a monitoring tool runs.
A message about an AppleTalk open or collect procedure can indicate that Windows is trying to load a legacy counter provider. It does not automatically mean that an application DLL is missing.
Ask whether the computer still needs AppleTalk or Services for Macintosh. If it does not, the safest long-term fix is to remove or disable the obsolete feature using the applicable legacy Windows documentation, or repair the migration that left the registration behind. Modern Windows does not provide a universal current removal procedure for every old AppleTalk configuration.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Historical Windows components associated with atkctrs.dll were 32-bit. That does not mean a current 64-bit Windows installation should contain a manually copied version in both system folders.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit system binaries.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries.
The folder names are confusing, but copying the same historical DLL into both locations is not a valid repair strategy. A 32-bit application can also fail because its installer, registration, or legacy dependency is incompatible with the current operating system.
To identify the program architecture, inspect the program’s official documentation or installer. You can also examine the executable’s location and age, but do not infer compatibility from the DLL filename alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the program is 32-bit:
- Repair or reinstall the 32-bit program using its original installer.
- Install any required components supplied by the program’s vendor.
- Test the application in its intended compatibility environment.
- Avoid replacing Windows files manually.
Windows compatibility settings may help an old application launch, but they will not recreate an unsupported AppleTalk subsystem. If the software genuinely depends on that subsystem, a separate legacy environment may be necessary.

atkctrs.dll is not a hardware-driver DLL, so updating a graphics, audio, chipset, or network driver will not normally restore it. Driver work makes sense only when the error appeared after installing an old hardware utility, network-management package, or vendor suite that bundled a legacy Windows component.
To check devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected software, such as Network adapters, System devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a trusted Windows Update or device-vendor source.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not expect Device Manager to list atkctrs.dll as a driver. If the old application remains broken, repair or reinstall that application instead.
When manually checking many devices becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention. Its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and updating drivers still will not replace a missing AppleTalk performance-counter component.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 atkctrs.dll
as a routine fix.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A performance-counter provider is configured through Windows performance-counter registration, not ordinary COM registration.
If a legacy counter provider genuinely needs re-registration, the relevant tools and configuration involve performance-counter mechanisms such as lodctr and unlodctr, along with the provider’s registration data. Running regsvr32 against atkctrs.dll can produce an error without repairing the underlying issue.
On a modern Windows installation, do not invent registration commands from forum posts. First determine whether the old AppleTalk component is actually supported and required.
Why downloading atkctrs.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and random file mirrors. A replacement DLL can be:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename.
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing a valid Microsoft signature.
- Incompatible with the application or operating system.
- A distraction from a damaged service or performance-counter registration.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, trusted original installation media, the affected application’s official installer, and official Microsoft recovery options.
Microsoft does not provide a current general-purpose download page specifically for atkctrs.dll. If the file is absent because current Windows no longer includes AppleTalk, downloading an old copy does not make the unsupported subsystem functional.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If the error started immediately after an update, disk problem, failed servicing operation, or system migration, System Restore may reverse the related system changes.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but is not a substitute for backing up personal files.

What to do if every repair fails
Collect the exact evidence before escalating:
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the message.
- The full path of the requested DLL.
- The Event Viewer source and event details.
- Whether the failure occurs at startup, application launch, or only during monitoring.
- Whether the affected software is 32-bit.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file.
- Whether the machine was upgraded from an older Windows installation.
If the executable belongs to one old application, reinstall that application or replace it with a supported version. If Event Viewer alone reports AppleTalk, remove or repair the obsolete counter configuration rather than chasing a launch-DLL solution.
If Windows itself remains unstable after DISM, SFC, recovery, and application repair, use a supported repair reinstall. Back up personal files first.
FAQ
Is atkctrs.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. The filename and description identify a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with AppleTalk performance counters. That does not authenticate every copy found on a computer. Location, digital signature, and surrounding system context still matter.
Is it malware?
The filename itself is not malware. A suspicious copy outside the expected Windows or trusted application context can still be an impostor. Scan it and do not restore it solely because the name looks legitimate.
Is atkctrs.dll part of Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence supports that. Installing those packages is not an appropriate general fix for this file.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Historical 32-bit metadata does not justify copying an old DLL into either folder, much less both. Repair the Windows component or the old application that requested it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will reinstalling a graphics or network driver fix it?
Usually not. atkctrs.dll is a performance-counter component, not a normal hardware-driver library. Update a driver only when a specific old vendor package is clearly responsible.
Why does the error appear only in Event Viewer?
Windows may be trying to load an old AppleTalk performance-counter registration during startup or monitoring. That is a Perflib or legacy-service issue, not necessarily an application launch failure.
Can regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. Performance-counter providers use performance-counter registration mechanisms rather than ordinary COM registration.
What is the safest fix?
Run Windows Update, then elevated DISM followed by SFC. If only one old program fails, repair or reinstall that program. If the message is only a Perflib event, investigate the obsolete AppleTalk registration instead of downloading the DLL.
