The game expects you to gather Leads, decide whom to trust and make your own way through the quarantine zone. Start by choosing settings that suit you, then explore Slatten Dale and nearby Wyndham at your own pace.
These nine tips synthesize guidance from Rebellion; they are not an official ranking or a tested route.

1. Choose a Playstyle that fits your preferences
Atomfall offers five presets that vary in combat challenge, survival pressure and how much exploration guidance you receive. Pick the one that sounds comfortable rather than treating it as a permanent difficulty commitment: Rebellion says you can tailor the settings and adjust them later.
- Sightseer: lower-pressure exploration.
- Investigator: lighter survival and combat pressure.
- Brawler: combat-focused, with more guided exploration.
- Survivor: the balanced, classic experience.
- Veteran: harsher combat and consequences.
The labels alone do not tell the whole story; consider both survival demands and navigation help when choosing. The presets and their purpose are described by Rebellion accessibility designer Cari Watterton in Xbox Wire’s accessibility article.

2. Learn to follow Leads instead of looking for quests
“Atomfall doesn’t have a traditional quest or mission system,” writes Rich May, Rebellion’s senior programmer. Conversations, recordings, letters and other discoveries reveal Leads. Those threads can connect to the larger mystery, but you choose which ones to pursue; Rebellion describes them as optional and interconnected.
When you find a new clue, read or listen to it and check your Leads before deciding where to go next. A Lead is a thread to investigate, not necessarily a command to drop everything and follow it immediately. Rebellion explains the system in its launch tips for Xbox Wire and gameplay deep dive.
3. Explore the opening area before pushing onward
After leaving the bunker, take time to get your bearings in Slatten Dale and nearby Wyndham. Rebellion’s launch guidance points to the ringing phone box, Nat and trader Molly, followed by Wyndham’s church, shops, bakery and pub as places to find information and Leads.

Use that as a set of possibilities, not a mandatory sequence. Explore what catches your attention, talk to people and inspect useful-looking discoveries before rushing toward the next area. The opening guidance is from Rich May’s Xbox Wire article.
4. Listen to people, but weigh what they want
People you meet can offer information, trade or try to steer you toward their own goals. Their conversations may reveal Leads, but a request from a character is not the same as a neutral instruction from the game. Pay attention to what they say, consider their interests and decide how you want to respond.

5. Avoid fights you do not need to take
Ammunition is scarce, so a fight can cost supplies better saved for a more dangerous encounter. Rebellion’s advice before combat is to “observe, plan, execute”: look at the situation, consider stealth or retreat, and engage when you have a reason and a plan.
A no-kill completion is possible, according to the developer, but extremely challenging. Treat avoidance as a useful option—not a promise that the game offers an easy pacifist route. See Rebellion’s launch tips and its mechanics deep dive.
6. Barter with traders rather than searching for money
Money is useless in the quarantine zone: trading works by barter. Traders value different resources, so check what a particular trader wants before handing over supplies. An item that is surplus to one trader may be more useful to you—or more valuable in a later exchange—than whatever is offered in return.

Search places you visit for food, weapons and other supplies. Guns and ammunition are hard to find, and backpack capacity is limited, so avoid treating every object as an automatic pickup. Craft useful items for your immediate needs; gear you cannot use yet can be stored in pneumatic dispatch tubes.
Build skills as you find the means
Manuals teach skills, while Training Stimulants unlock them. Look for both as you explore, and use them to develop the abilities that match how you are playing.

8. Look for the in-game metal detector
Rebellion recommends finding or bartering for the metal detector. It can help locate resources such as scrap metal, medical supplies or ammunition, making it useful when you need to replenish what exploration and combat have consumed. This is an item in Atomfall, not a recommendation to buy a real-world detector.

9. Set navigation and accessibility options to suit you
Survivor has no map or compass waypoints by default, but you can place manual markers. If you prefer more direction, exploration settings can add Navigational Hints, Flagged Leads and Waypoint Markers. You do not have to choose between total guidance and being completely unguided: manual markers and optional aids let you find a level that suits you.
