For a flexible start in Atomfall, prioritize Disarm Traps, then consider Charisma and Deep Pockets; take Gunsmith when weapon upgrades fit your plans and you have found its required manual. This is a practical order for exploration and resource management, not a universal best build: the right skills depend on how you approach combat and which Training Manuals you find.
Best early-game skills in Atomfall, ranked
This ranking favors skills that can help across exploration, preparation, and encounters. It is a guide-based recommendation, not a measured comparison of skill performance.
- Disarm Traps: A strong first pick for players who explore thoroughly. It helps when you encounter traps and lets you recover crafting supplies, making it useful beyond a single combat style.
- Charisma: A practical option if you expect to trade with merchants. A skills guide recommends it for improving merchant transactions, though its value depends on how often you trade.
- Deep Pockets: A good fit for frequent scavengers who want to carry more crafting materials and ammunition. Its benefit is most relevant if you tend to collect supplies rather than travel light.
- Gunsmith: A longer-term pick for players who want to upgrade weapons. It requires finding the Crafting Training Manual first, so it may not be available when you are choosing your earliest skills.
Xbox Wire’s launch tips advise players to search for resources, conserve ammunition because guns and ammunition are hard to come by, and use manuals and Training Stimulants to expand and unlock skills. That scarcity makes exploration and preparation sensible priorities, but it does not make a utility-focused order mandatory for every player. Xbox Wire’s Atomfall launch tips
How skills, manuals, and Training Stimulants work
Atomfall does not use a conventional experience-point skill tree, according to the reviewed guides. You find Training Manuals to reveal additional skills, then spend Training Stimulants to unlock skills. Starting choices span Ranged Combat, Melee Combat, Survival, and Conditioning; more specialized options require the relevant manual.

Because Stimulants are limited, treat each unlock as an opportunity-cost choice rather than assuming you can buy every useful skill early. Before spending one, consider how often the skill supports your preferred approach, whether it helps with exploration or access to resources, and whether you already have the manual it requires. The available guides establish scarcity and manual gates, but do not provide a tested universal payoff calculation for each skill.
Adjust the order to your playstyle
Exploration and scavenging
Take Disarm Traps early when it is available, then look at carrying capacity and resource management. This order suits players who search broadly and gather crafting materials. Deep Pockets is gated by the Crafting manual, according to the reviewed skills guide.

Trading and preparation
Consider Charisma if merchant transactions are an important part of how you prepare. Deep Pockets can complement it if you also carry ammunition and crafting supplies, but the Crafting manual is required before you can unlock Deep Pockets, according to the guides.
Weapon upgrading and ranged combat
Choose Gunsmith if you plan to upgrade firearms and have obtained the Crafting manual. A guide-reported route to that manual is through Morris Wick in Wyndham Village during the St. Catherine’s Church questline; treat this as a route tip, since availability can depend on quest state. Gunsmith supports weapon upgrading, but ammunition scarcity means a firearm-focused skill need not be your first purchase.

Stealth
If stealth is your main approach, look for the Stealth Training Manual and prioritize skills that reduce footstep noise or improve takedowns. A guide reports that Molly Jowett in Slatten Dale can sell the manual. This is a reported location, not a guarantee regardless of your progress or circumstances.
Melee combat
If you rely on close combat, spend Stimulants on the Melee Combat branch. Its value comes from matching your approach; the guides do not establish that melee upgrades outperform other branches for all players.

Finding the manuals that gate useful skills
Manuals determine which specialized skills become available, so finding one can change what is worth spending Stimulants on. The guides report that the Crafting manual unlocks access to Gunsmith and Deep Pockets, as well as Crafting Speed. They also report the Stealth manual route through Molly Jowett in Slatten Dale. These are guide-reported routes and prerequisites, not a guarantee that a character at any quest stage can obtain a manual the same way.

A quick decision check before spending a Stimulant
- Will I use this often? Prioritize skills that fit the way you actually explore or fight.
- Does it help me prepare? Carrying capacity, trap supplies, and merchant transactions may be more useful to a scavenger or planner than to a player who moves quickly through areas.
- Do I have the required manual? Check manual gates before planning around specialized skills such as Gunsmith or Deep Pockets.
- What am I giving up? Stimulants are limited, so compare the skill’s likely role in your run with the other options currently available.
