Atomfall offers five preset Playstyles rather than a single easy-to-hard difficulty ladder: Sightseer, Investigator, Brawler, Survivor, and Veteran. Each balances combat, survival, and exploration differently, and you can tailor or change the settings during a playthrough. For the developer-recommended balanced starting point, choose Survivor; pick another preset if you want a specific part of the experience to feel easier or more demanding.
How Atomfall’s Playstyles work
Rebellion describes the presets as Playstyles, not conventional difficulty levels. Accessibility designer Cari Watterton explains that distinction in Rebellion’s Xbox Wire article about Atomfall’s accessibility options. The presets shape combat pressure, survival demands, and how much guidance you get while exploring. They are starting points, not locked packages: you can tailor settings individually and change them during a playthrough.

The comparisons below are qualitative. Rebellion has not published a numeric ranking of every setting or specific values for enemy damage, resource rates, or other mechanics.
| Playstyle | What it emphasizes | Good fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|
| Sightseer | Less combat and survival pressure, with exploration emphasized. | To focus on the story and explore the Quarantine Zone with fewer combat and survival demands. |
| Investigator | Unguided exploration, with lighter combat and survival pressure. | To find your own way without as much pressure from combat or survival. |
| Brawler | Combat emphasis, lighter survival demands, and more exploration guidance. | To make encounters central while getting more help finding your way. |
| Survivor | A balance of combat and survival; Rebellion’s recommended classic experience. | A balanced starting point that reflects the developer’s intended baseline. |
| Veteran | Harsh combat and consequences. | A grittier, more demanding fight for survival. |
These descriptions follow Rebellion senior programmer Rich May’s launch guidance and Watterton’s explanation of the adjustable Playstyles. May’s Xbox Wire launch tips recommend Survivor, while Watterton describes how the presets can be tailored.

Which Atomfall Playstyle should you choose?
Choose Survivor for a balanced first run
Rebellion calls Survivor the classic Atomfall experience and recommends it as the balanced option. May’s advice is: “Survivor offers the recommended Atomfall experience but pick whichever best suits you and the way you want to play.” It is a sensible first choice if you want both combat and survival to matter without beginning at the harsher end of the range.
Choose Sightseer for story and exploration
Sightseer reduces combat and survival demands while emphasizing exploration. Pick it if you want to spend more attention on the setting and narrative than on fighting or managing survival pressure.

Choose Investigator for less guidance
Investigator is for players who want unguided exploration but lighter combat and survival pressure. The “unguided” part matters: it suits finding your own way, rather than receiving the most help with navigation.
Choose Brawler for combat with more exploration help
Brawler puts more emphasis on combat, eases survival demands, and adds guidance for exploration. It is a fit if you want encounters to be central but do not want survival pressure or navigation to dominate.

Choose Veteran for harsher consequences
Veteran is the more demanding choice, with harsh combat and consequences. Choose it if you are looking for a grittier survival challenge rather than a gentler introduction.
Can you change difficulty after starting?
Yes. Rebellion says Playstyles can be tailored and changed at any time during a playthrough. Its launch guidance says to adjust settings in the Options menu if your initial choice is not working for you. The official PlayStation Atomfall listing also describes customizing challenge or activating assists individually.

How to add navigation help
Survivor does not put waypoints on the map or compass by default. You can place markers manually, or adjust Exploration settings if you want more direction. Rebellion names these options:
- Navigational Hints: gives short hint text summarizing a lead.
- Flagged Leads: can highlight main-story quests.
- Waypoint Markers: can place objective markers on the compass.
This lets you address a specific friction point—finding your way—without treating the whole game as a single difficulty choice. The available sources describe these named options but do not document every control or exact combination, so the best approach is to adjust what you need in the game’s settings.

What the settings do not establish
Rebellion’s published descriptions do not provide exact enemy counts, damage multipliers, resource rates, or a numerical ordering for every individual setting. They also do not establish whether a Playstyle or adjusted setting changes achievement or trophy eligibility. Avoid assuming either a specific mechanical value or a trophy effect based on the preset names alone.
