atv06nt5.dll is a legacy Intel graphics-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or says it is “not designed to run on Windows,” the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the matching Intel display driver rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
The file is described as Digital Display Minidriver for Intel(R) Graphics Driver and is associated with the old product name Intel(R) Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows NT(R). “Minidriver” means a small driver component that helps the main graphics driver communicate with a particular display function. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file.

Historical inventories place it at:
%SystemRoot%System32driversatv06nt5.dll
Older records describe a 32-bit file, version 6.13.01.3198, with a size of approximately 14,143 bytes. Those details belong to historical driver inventories, not every Intel package. The path can also vary by Windows generation and driver installer. Do not use the old size or version as a universal authenticity test.

Avoid DLL download sites and random copies posted in forums. An isolated file can have the wrong architecture, dependencies, version, digital signature, or malicious contents. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also hide the real problem while leaving the Intel driver broken.

The correct source is the complete graphics-driver package from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Intel’s own driver packages and detection tools are appropriate when an OEM package is unavailable or no longer supports the system, but Intel generic drivers can remove hardware-specific customizations.

These are generic Windows DLL messages reported for this filename. The wording alone does not identify the failing driver, application, or cause.
Fix 1: identify the Intel graphics adapter
Time needed: 3–5 minutes
Start by identifying the hardware before installing anything. This prevents a common mistake: installing a newer Intel package that does not support an older graphics adapter.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Select the Intel graphics device.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the following:
- Device name
- Driver Provider
- Driver Date
- Driver Version
- Open the Details tab and select Hardware Ids from the property list if you need to identify the exact adapter.
If Display adapters shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the Intel driver may already be missing or damaged. If the Intel adapter has a yellow warning icon, open its properties and note the device status code.
Also check View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager. A faded Intel display adapter can indicate an old driver installation or hardware entry left behind after an upgrade.
Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL belongs in SysWOW64. Windows places driver files according to the package’s INF instructions. Manually choosing a folder based only on the DLL’s bitness is unsafe.
Fix 2: install the manufacturer’s Intel graphics driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The preferred repair is the graphics driver published for the exact computer, motherboard, or laptop model.
- Find the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page.
- Search by the exact model shown on the computer’s label or in Settings → System → About.
- Open the Drivers, Downloads, or Support section.
- Select the correct Windows version.
- Download the Graphics, Display, or Intel Graphics driver.
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Accept the default installation choices unless the manufacturer provides different instructions.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Return to Device Manager → Display adapters → Intel graphics device → Properties → Driver and confirm that the provider and version changed as expected.
Test the program that produced the error. A successful repair normally means that the program starts without the DLL message, Device Manager reports no warning icon, and the display works at the expected resolution and refresh rate.
If the manufacturer provides several Intel graphics packages, choose the one matching your Windows version and hardware generation. The newest package is not automatically correct for older Intel graphics.
Intel’s Download Center and Driver & Support Assistant can help locate compatible packages when the OEM site has no usable driver. Use the exact adapter name from Device Manager, not just the word “Intel.”
If manually comparing hardware, use Device Manager → Properties → Details → Hardware Ids. Do not install a package solely because its name contains the same DLL filename.
If hunting through several manufacturer pages and matching old hardware versions is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; the OEM package remains the preferred source for this Intel hardware.
Fix 3: perform a clean Intel graphics installation
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use a clean installation when the normal installer fails, the error returns after reboot, or Device Manager shows remnants of several Intel driver generations.

First try the clean-install option in the Intel or OEM installer:
- Download the correct driver before removing the current one.
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily if Windows keeps replacing the driver automatically.
- Run the graphics-driver installer.
- Select Execute a clean installation, if the option is available.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart the computer.
- Reconnect to the internet and test the affected application.
If the installer has no clean-install choice, use Device Manager:

The display may temporarily use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter during this process. That is expected. Do not interrupt the installation because the screen resolution changes or briefly goes blank.
When DDU is appropriate
Display Driver Uninstaller, commonly called DDU, is a more aggressive cleanup method. Consider it only when the normal OEM clean installation fails repeatedly, multiple incompatible display drivers are installed, or a rollback left broken driver components behind.
Use the correct graphics package first, create a restore point if possible, and follow the DDU publisher’s current instructions. Disconnecting from the internet prevents Windows Update from immediately installing a different driver during cleanup.
DDU is not the first step for a single missing-file message. It removes more driver material than most cases require, and an incorrect driver installed afterward can leave the system with reduced graphics functionality.

Fix 4: determine whether an old startup entry is calling it
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A missing DLL message does not always mean the active display driver needs the file. Windows may be trying to load an obsolete startup entry, scheduled task, installer component, or old application that still references the filename.
Check when the message appears:
- During Windows startup: suspect an orphaned startup entry or scheduled task.
- When opening a particular old application: suspect that application or its bundled installer.
- Immediately after a driver update: suspect an incomplete or mismatched graphics installation.
- Immediately after an antivirus alert: inspect quarantine before restoring anything.
- Only after a Windows upgrade: suspect legacy-driver incompatibility or a leftover reference.
Use these built-in checks:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry related to an old Intel utility, display tool, installer, or unknown publisher.
- Right-click an entry and choose Open file location when available.
- Disable only an entry you can identify as obsolete, then restart and test.
For more detail, open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Check Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System.
- Look around the time of the error.
- Record the calling executable, folder path, and event details.
If only one old application triggers the message, repair or reinstall that application using its original installer. Check whether the application has a newer release or compatibility guidance. Do not install unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages unless the application specifically reports a missing component from one of those runtimes.
Fix 5: repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use Windows repair commands when several protected files are missing, Windows Update is failing, system applications are unstable, or the DLL error began with broader operating-system corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. It can appear stalled for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program and check Device Manager again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling an Intel graphics driver, because atv06nt5.dll belongs to an old driver package rather than being a normal modern Windows runtime component.
If SFC says it found and repaired files, restart and test. If it says it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If Windows remains unstable, continue with the recovery options below rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

If manually running DISM and SFC leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it detects. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace the Intel driver package when the graphics driver is the actual cause.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings:

- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now if available.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart and test the application.
The option may not be available on every Windows installation. Use it for broader Windows component problems, not as the first response to a driver-specific error.
Fix 6: check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus quarantine is a plausible cause if the message appeared immediately after a security detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the DLL disappeared.
- Open a relevant detection to see its original path and action.
Do not restore a file solely because its name contains “Intel.” Check whether it came from the expected driver directory, whether the associated driver package is legitimate, and whether the file has a valid Intel digital signature.
If a quarantined file appears legitimate, reinstall the complete OEM graphics package instead of depending on a restored isolated DLL. Restoring a file can cause Defender to detect it again, and allowing an uncertain file creates additional risk.

If the file was found in a user profile, temporary directory, download folder, or unrelated application directory, treat it as an impersonator until proven otherwise. Run a full scan, and use an offline scan if malware remains a concern.
Fix 7: handle regsvr32 and Windows Features correctly
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components.
An Intel display-driver file should be installed through its driver package and INF instructions. Running:
regsvr32 atv06nt5.dll
will usually produce an error or accomplish nothing useful. It can also create confusion about which copy of the file Windows is using.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Windows Features are not the normal repair route either. Opening Turn Windows features on or off will not reinstall an Intel display driver. Do not enable legacy components just because a DLL error appears.
Use Windows Features only when the failing application explicitly identifies a missing Windows feature, such as an application that requires a particular legacy framework. That is separate from repairing atv06nt5.dll.
Fix 8: use System Restore or Windows recovery
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application installation, or system-settings change and a restore point exists.

If Windows is still damaged after driver repair, DISM, SFC, and System Restore, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first. On Windows 11, the Reinstall now recovery option described above is the least disruptive supported route when available.
What is most likely causing the error
| Likely cause | Typical clue | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupt or incomplete Intel driver | Error followed an update, rollback, upgrade, cleanup, or failed uninstall | Reinstall the exact OEM graphics driver |
| Legacy driver incompatibility | Old hardware or an old 32-bit driver on modern 64-bit Windows | Use the newest driver supported by the hardware and Windows |
| Orphaned startup reference | Message appears during startup after software was removed | Identify and remove or repair the calling entry |
| Antivirus quarantine | DLL disappeared immediately after a security alert | Inspect Protection History and reinstall the complete signed package |
| Windows component corruption | Multiple protected files or Windows functions are failing | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malware or an impostor | File is outside the expected driver location or unsigned | Scan the system and do not whitelist it |
The file’s legacy lineage explains why it may appear on a newer Windows installation. A computer may have been upgraded from older Windows, retained an old Intel graphics package, or kept a startup reference after the original driver or application was removed. That does not mean modern Windows normally includes this file.
If the error appears only with an old game or application
Repair or reinstall that program first, using its original installer. Check its compatibility settings and whether it has a supported update. Capture the exact executable and full path shown by the error.
Do not assume the program needs Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET simply because the message mentions a DLL. There is no verified evidence that reinstalling those runtimes repairs this specific Intel display-driver component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the application was designed for much older Windows, the old program may be trying to load a driver component that modern Windows no longer supports. In that case, reinstalling the obsolete DLL is not a durable solution. Updating, removing, or running the application in an appropriate compatibility environment is safer.
FAQ
Is atv06nt5.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
It is best treated as an Intel graphics-driver file, not a standard modern Windows runtime. Historical records associate it with Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows NT.
Is atv06nt5.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A legitimate historical Intel file may exist, but a copy in a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory deserves investigation. Check its path, digital signature, and driver provenance, then scan the system.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. The driver installer decides where its files belong. Manual copying can create architecture and dependency problems and does not repair the device’s INF configuration.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I use regsvr32?
Normally no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points, not ordinary Intel display-driver components.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on 64-bit Windows?
Legacy drivers and applications can include 32-bit components. That does not tell you to place the file in SysWOW64, however. Install the complete driver package and let its instructions place each component correctly.
What should I send to support?
Include the Windows version, Intel graphics model, exact error text, full file path, Device Manager driver provider and version, relevant Event Viewer details, Defender detection information, and what changed immediately before the error began. Screenshots of the Display adapters and Driver tabs can also help.
The practical repair path is therefore straightforward: identify the Intel adapter, install the correct OEM graphics package, perform a clean installation if necessary, and use DISM, SFC, Defender, or recovery tools only when the evidence points beyond the driver itself.
