auinstallagent.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime, game DLL, graphics driver, or standalone application file. If Windows reports that auinstallagent.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading an isolated copy.
What auinstallagent.dll is
Public Windows file inventories identify the file as Windows All-User Install Agent, with the display name AllUserInstallAgent. The documented Windows location is:
%windir%System32AUInstallAgent.dll
Available file records associate it with Windows 8 and list version 6.2.9200.16384. That evidence does not establish that the same file is shipped identically in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build, so do not select a replacement based only on a website’s “32-bit” or “64-bit” label.
| Check | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | AUInstallAgent.dll |
| Description | Windows All-User Install Agent |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation in public file inventories |
| Expected system path | %windir%System32AUInstallAgent.dll |
| Best repair source | Windows servicing and recovery tools |
| Standalone Microsoft download | None identified |
A copy with this name in a game folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or user profile is not automatically genuine. Windows file-system redirection also makes it unsafe to infer architecture from the System32 folder name alone.

What the error messages mean
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because auinstallagent.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because auinstallagent.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting auinstallagent.dll.”
- “Error loading auinstallagent.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
These messages do not always mean that the named file itself has been deleted. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean Windows found the requested DLL but could not load one of its dependencies.
If the message appears only when opening one older program, repair that program after repairing Windows. If it appears during startup or across multiple programs, treat it as a Windows component problem first.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update can restore or replace damaged protected components.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Try the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker. Do not keep repeating Windows Update while the component store may be damaged.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC
This is the most useful first repair for a missing or damaged Windows DLL. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as its repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- When both commands finish, restart Windows.
- Test the program that produced the error.
A successful DISM operation reports that the restore operation completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corrupted files it could not repair.
If SFC repaired files, restart and test again. If it found no violations, investigate the application, its dependencies, permissions, and the exact path named in the error. The message may be caused by a dependency rather than AUInstallAgent.dll itself.
Running these commands manually means interpreting logs and determining which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and identify what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line repair.

If DISM cannot find source files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update may not be providing a usable repair source.
Use a matching Windows installation source and replace the placeholder path in this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not guess at a random folder or use an unrelated Windows image. If you do not have a valid matching source, use Windows Update recovery or an official in-place repair installation instead.

If SFC cannot repair the file
First, restart and run the commands again only if DISM completed successfully. If SFC still says it could not repair files:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Review the CBS log referenced in the SFC result.
- Note whether the failure concerns
AUInstallAgent.dllor another component. - Run DISM again with a valid matching repair source if Windows Update is unusable.
- Restart and run
sfc /scannowagain.
If SFC repeatedly fails, back up important files and investigate disk or file-system corruption. Persistent damage may require System Restore, an in-place repair installation, or hardware investigation.
Fix 3: Repair the affected program
If the error occurs only with one application, the program may be damaged or may be calling a missing dependency incorrectly.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and check the result.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Update the program afterward. Do this only after Windows component repair if the same DLL error affects more than one application.
Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the executable. That can mask the underlying Windows problem and may allow an untrusted file to load before the correct system component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file, but restoring it blindly is unsafe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event involving
AUInstallAgent.dll. - Check the recorded file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only if it is in the genuine Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid. If the file was found in an application folder, temporary folder, or user profile, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to copy in a replacement DLL.
If you suspect malware:
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Follow the recommended cleanup actions.
- Restart Windows and run the component repair commands again.
If Windows remains unreliable or the file repeatedly returns in a suspicious location, use System Restore or an in-place repair installation.
Fix 5: Check the file’s location and signature
A genuine system copy should normally be under the Windows directory, specifically the documented System32 location. A matching filename elsewhere requires investigation.

To check the path:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager if the error is linked to a running process.
- Use Windows Search to find
AUInstallAgent.dll. - Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A valid signature does not make every copy safe in every context, but an unsigned copy in a temporary or user-writable directory is a strong reason not to use it. Do not delete a system file manually before completing a malware scan and Windows repair.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall Windows
Use a deeper recovery option when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, the error began after an update, or corruption keeps returning.
Windows 11 Windows Update reinstall
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the PC connected to power and allow the process to finish.
- Restart and test the affected program.
Microsoft describes this process as reinstalling the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after a driver, update, or software installation.
- Open Start and search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed applications without removing personal files. It does not replace a backup, so save important work first.
In-place repair installation
If Windows 11 recovery is unavailable, use official Windows installation media for the installed edition and build.
- Obtain Windows installation media from Microsoft.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media and run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup prompts.
- Choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
- Complete the installation and run Windows Update afterward.
Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation unless you intend to erase applications and files. An in-place repair is the appropriate option when the goal is to refresh Windows while preserving the existing installation.
Drivers and Windows Features
AUInstallAgent.dll is not documented here as a graphics, chipset, audio, or other hardware driver. Updating Device Manager drivers is therefore not a primary fix for this error.
If Device Manager also shows a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the affected device category.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a known driver update, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Guessing among many driver versions is avoidable with Outbyte Driver Updater, whose free scan identifies outdated drivers while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows.
Do not enable or disable random entries under Turn Windows features on or off for this DLL. Windows Features is not a general DLL restoration tool.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random archive
There is no official Microsoft standalone download identified for AUInstallAgent.dll. Third-party DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a clean copy may not fix a missing dependency or damaged component store.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows installation media instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or an application folder
Manual copying can overwrite the wrong build, create permission problems, and hide the real cause. It can also make an application load an untrusted DLL from its own directory.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
Do not use:
regsvr32 auinstallagent.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable Microsoft evidence establishing that AUInstallAgent.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Registration is not the same as restoring a protected Windows component.

FAQ
Is auinstallagent.dll malware?
The file is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component when it is the genuine signed file in the Windows system directory. A same-named file elsewhere is not automatically legitimate. Check its path, signature, and antivirus history.
Is it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Public evidence clearly associates the documented file record with Windows 8. It does not establish that an identical copy is included in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. Use the installed version’s own repair and recovery tools rather than downloading a version-specific copy.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No particular runtime is documented as the owner of this file. Install or repair a runtime only when the affected application specifically identifies that runtime as missing.
What if SFC finds no problems?
Check whether the error names a dependency, an application path, or a permissions problem. Repair or reinstall the affected program and inspect the file location rather than replacing the DLL.
