- “There was a problem starting ig4dev32.dll.”
- “ig4dev32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A different problem occurs when the application starts but crashes and identifies ig4dev32.dll as the faulting module. Java or Minecraft, for example, may report EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION in ig4dev32.dll. That usually points to an Intel OpenGL compatibility problem, not a missing file.

The 60-second answer
ig4dev32.dll is a genuine 32-bit Intel OpenGL graphics-driver module. It belongs to older Intel Graphics Media Accelerator and Intel Graphics Accelerator driver packages. It is not the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, .NET, or a standalone Windows application.
The safest first fix is to identify the Intel adapter in Device Manager and reinstall the complete graphics driver from the computer manufacturer. If the computer uses older Intel 965, GMA, or 4-Series graphics, the application may require OpenGL features that the hardware cannot provide. In that case, replacing the DLL cannot solve the problem.

Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. A download may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different driver package, or leave the damaged installation unchanged.
What the “32” means
The 32 in ig4dev32.dll identifies the module as 32-bit. It does not prove that Windows itself is 32-bit.
A 32-bit game or Java application may need this module even on 64-bit Windows. Conversely, installing a 64-bit file in place of a 32-bit module will not repair the error. Check the application architecture and the driver package before changing anything.
Historical file indexes list 32-bit versions such as 8.15.10.1883 and 6.14.10.4926. Those are file metadata, not universal versions to download manually.

First determine which failure you have
The program says the file is missing
This usually means the Intel graphics driver is incomplete, damaged, removed, or incompatible with the application. It can also mean that a dependency required by the driver is missing. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ig4dev32.dll itself is absent.
Windows says the file is not designed to run
This can indicate a damaged DLL, a mismatched driver package, or a 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch. Replacing the file alone is not a reliable fix.
The application crashes in ig4dev32.dll
A crash report naming the DLL does not prove that the DLL is defective. The module may simply be where an unsupported OpenGL operation failed. This is particularly important with older Intel 965 and 4-Series graphics running newer Minecraft or other OpenGL applications.
The problem affects several OpenGL programs
If multiple games or graphics applications fail, concentrate on the Intel driver and GPU capability. If only one program fails, repair that application before changing Windows.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the Intel graphics driver
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged ig4dev32.dll.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the exact Intel adapter name.
- Double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
- Check whether the adapter has a yellow warning icon.
Download the matching driver from the laptop, desktop, or motherboard manufacturer first. OEM graphics packages can contain custom settings that a generic driver does not. For older Intel hardware, use Intel’s official legacy graphics support page and match the listed Windows release and architecture. Intel’s currently listed legacy packages include separate Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit packages, so they should not be treated as universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 drivers.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Do not choose a package only because its version number is higher. Match:
- The exact Intel graphics adapter
- The Windows edition and supported release
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
- The computer manufacturer, when an OEM package exists
Then reinstall the adapter:
- In Device Manager, right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the downloaded OEM or Intel package.
- Restart again.
- Launch the affected application.
Windows may temporarily show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter after removal. That is expected until the proper package is installed. The repair worked if Device Manager shows the expected Intel adapter without a warning icon and the program starts without the DLL message.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which of several hardware drivers is stale or mismatched; its free scan identifies the issue, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the OEM driver remains the preferred source for a customized laptop or motherboard.
Roll back a recent driver
If the problem began immediately after a graphics update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason and restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install the previous OEM package manually instead.
Fix 2: Check whether the GPU is too old for the application
Older Intel integrated graphics can load ig4dev32.dll correctly and still fail when an application requests unsupported OpenGL features.
This is a likely explanation when:
- The application crashes instead of reporting a missing file.
- The crash log names
ig4dev32.dll. - Several older Intel 965 or 4-Series systems show the same OpenGL failure.
- The problem started after a game update.
- The newest available driver is already installed.
- Older applications work but a newer game does not.
Check the graphics model in Device Manager → Display adapters, then compare it with the application’s official minimum graphics requirements. Also check whether the application offers a compatibility, legacy-rendering, or lower-graphics mode.
If the GPU lacks a required OpenGL feature, use an older application version, select another graphics adapter if the computer has one, reduce the application’s graphics requirements, or replace the hardware. No standalone DLL can add missing GPU capabilities.
Fix 3: Repair the affected game or application
If only one program fails, its installation may be incomplete even when the Intel driver is healthy.
Use the launcher’s repair or verification option. In Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart the game.
For another launcher, use its equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command. If the error remains, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it again from its official source.

Do not copy ig4dev32.dll into the application folder unless the application’s publisher specifically instructs you to do so. A driver module normally needs its complete driver package and related dependencies.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined a legitimate driver file, but restoring it without checking can be unsafe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
ig4dev32.dll. - Check the file path, detection details, publisher, and signature.
- Restore or allow it only if the file is part of a verified Intel driver installation.
If the file is in an unexpected user-writable folder, has no valid signature, or appeared after an untrusted download, do not restore it. Run a full Windows Security scan and reinstall the graphics driver from the OEM or Intel source.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Use this step when several Windows features are malfunctioning or the driver installer reports broader system corruption. It will not replace a missing third-party Intel driver.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC may report no integrity violations because ig4dev32.dll is normally supplied by an Intel graphics-driver package rather than being a protected Windows component.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking system problems less repetitive; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are completed with the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct Intel driver or repairing the affected game.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the issue began after a driver, Windows, or application change and a suitable restore point exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart and test the application.
System Restore can undo driver, software, and system-setting changes without removing personal files. It will not make unsupported Intel hardware compatible with a newer OpenGL application.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 ig4dev32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM components. An Intel OpenGL device-driver module is not normally a self-registering COM DLL. Running the command often produces another error and does not reinstall the graphics driver.
Windows Features also cannot install this Intel module. Enabling optional features such as legacy components will not add the required GPU driver.
If it still fails
Collect these details before contacting the computer manufacturer, Intel, or the application publisher:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Exact Intel adapter name
- Windows edition, version, and architecture
- Application and application version
- Full error text or crash log
- Graphics-driver version
- The full path of
ig4dev32.dll, if present - Whether Device Manager shows a warning icon
- Whether one application or several OpenGL applications fail
- Whether the problem followed a driver update, Windows reinstall, game update, cleanup, or quarantine event
The decisive distinction is whether the driver is damaged or the GPU is unsupported. Reinstalling the complete matching package can repair the first problem. It cannot add OpenGL features that the older Intel hardware never provided.
