It is not a Windows system file, so downloading it into System32 is usually the wrong fix.
The safest solution is to identify the program that requested the file, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer. If you are intentionally developing with AutoItX, install the official AutoIt package and use the DLL that matches your application’s architecture.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program showing the error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The application that displays the error is usually the program that needs repair. AutoItX may be bundled inside an installer, launcher, utility, automation tool, or another third-party application.
Repair it through Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application that will not start.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s settings and user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the option may remove application data.

Some traditional desktop programs use a different repair path:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official download or the launcher’s built-in installer. For a game, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function before reinstalling the entire game.
How to tell whether this worked
The application should launch without the missing-file message. If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Continue with the architecture and antivirus checks below.

Fix 2: Install AutoIt from its official package
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If you are using an AutoIt script, an AutoItX-based utility, or a developer tool that explicitly requires AutoItX, install AutoIt from the official AutoIt download page. The official AutoIt package includes AutoItX and is digitally signed by AutoIt Consulting Ltd.
The current official download page lists AutoIt v3.3.18.0. It provides a full installer and a portable package. Use the package recommended by the application or development project rather than selecting an old DLL from a file-index website.
After installation:
- Close the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the program again.
- If it still fails, check whether the program’s own installation directory contains the required AutoItX file.
- If the application was supplied by another vendor, reinstall that application as well.
Ordinary AutoIt scripts generally use AutoIt3.exe; they do not automatically require AutoItX. Compiled AutoIt scripts are also normally distributed as standalone programs. This means a missing AutoItX file often points to a separate application or integration that uses AutoItX deliberately.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
AutoItX has two relevant native filenames:
AutoItX3.dllis the 32-bit DLL.AutoItX3_x64.dllis the native 64-bit DLL.
A 32-bit application must load the 32-bit file. A 64-bit application must load the x64 file. A 64-bit version of Windows can run both kinds of programs, so the operating system’s bitness does not tell you which DLL the application needs.

Do not rename one file to imitate the other. That does not convert its architecture.
Check the application architecture
Windows does not always display the architecture clearly. Use the application’s documentation, installer name, project settings, or vendor support information. Developers can also inspect the executable with a trusted development or binary-inspection tool.
If you control the application:
- Build a 32-bit application with
AutoItX3.dll. - Build a 64-bit application with
AutoItX3_x64.dll. - Deploy the matching native DLL beside the application executable.
- Ensure the application’s native-library search path includes that directory.
A .NET reference to AutoItX3.Assembly.dll does not necessarily copy the native DLL into the build output. Check the application’s output directory after publishing and confirm that the correct native file is present.
What the error wording suggests
- “AutoItX3.dll is missing” usually means the file is absent from the application’s deployment or search path.
- “Unable to load DLL … The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of AutoItX3.dll is missing, not necessarily that AutoItX3.dll itself is absent.
- “Bad Image,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or “specified procedure could not be found” points more strongly to damaged bytes, an incompatible build, or an architecture mismatch.
Reinstall the complete application when these messages appear. Replacing only the named file often leaves the underlying problem untouched.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
An antivirus product or cleanup utility may have removed or quarantined the file. Do not assume a detection means the file is malware, but do not restore it blindly either.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the affected application or AutoItX.
- Check the detected file’s path and publisher information.
- If the file came from the application’s genuine installer and the signature can be verified, follow your organization’s security policy before allowing or restoring it.
- If the source is unknown, remove the application and reinstall it from its official source instead.
Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device. Reinstalling the parent application is safer than restoring an isolated DLL from an uncertain location.
Fix 5: Use regsvr32 only for a COM registration problem
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
AutoItX is supplied as a combined DLL and COM/ActiveX interface. Registration is relevant when the application reports “class not registered,” cannot create AutoItX3.Control, or gives a COM activation error.

It is not the normal fix for a missing native DLL, a .NET DllNotFoundException, or an x86/x64 mismatch.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 guidance explains that 64-bit Windows has separate registration tools:
System32regsvr32.exeis the 64-bit tool.SysWOW64regsvr32.exeis the 32-bit tool.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and use the command matching the DLL.
For the 32-bit DLL:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)AutoIt3AutoItXAutoItX3.dll"
For the x64 DLL:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesAutoIt3AutoItXAutoItX3_x64.dll"
Replace the example path with the actual installation path.
A success message means the COM registration entry points were accepted. It does not prove that the file is undamaged, that the application has the right architecture, or that all dependencies are present. If registration fails, confirm the path, bitness, administrator permissions, and whether the application actually uses COM.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only after repairing the app
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Because AutoItX is a third-party component, Windows repair tools are not the primary solution. Use them when other Windows applications also show corruption errors, or when the problem began after broader system damage.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows component files; they do not normally supply AutoItX.

When manually running SFC and DISM becomes repetitive and you cannot tell which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when reinstalling the owning application solves the problem.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver is not normally the owner of AutoItX3.dll. Do not update every driver merely because this DLL is missing. Consider a driver check only if the application also reports graphics, input, hardware, or device initialization failures.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the application.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clearly faulty device, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer. Avoid third-party driver packages that are not intended for your exact hardware.

Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong version, an altered file, or a DLL with the wrong architecture. Even a genuine file may not match the application that requested it.
Do not:
- Copy
AutoItX3.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32as a first step. - Copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64because the name appears to suggest 64-bit support. - Rename
AutoItX3.dlltoAutoItX3_x64.dll. - Register the file without knowing whether the application uses COM.
- Use a registry cleaner to repair a missing application component.
Application-local deployment is generally safer. Install the parent application or the official AutoIt package so that the correct file, dependencies, permissions, and registration are installed together.

If the error still appears
Record the following before contacting the application vendor:
- The full error text.
- The exact program or executable that fails.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The application’s installation directory.
- Whether
AutoItX3.dllorAutoItX3_x64.dllis present. - Whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
- Whether the error began after an update, cleanup, or uninstall.
Process Monitor or the application’s loader logs can show which directories Windows searched and which dependency was actually missing.
System Restore is appropriate only when the problem began after a known software or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a substitute for repairing or reinstalling the application that owns AutoItX.

FAQ
Is autoitx3.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an AutoItX component supplied with AutoIt or bundled by another application. It is not a Windows system DLL.

No. Obtain it through the official AutoIt package or the official installer for the application that requires it.
Is AutoItX3.dll the same as AutoItX3_x64.dll?
No. The first is the 32-bit DLL. The second is the native 64-bit counterpart. The calling application must use the matching architecture.
Will regsvr32 fix a missing-file error?
Usually not. Use it only when the application needs AutoItX’s COM or ActiveX registration and reports a registration-related error.
Does autoitx3.dll belong in System32?
Not by default. The correct location is normally the owning application’s directory or its configured native-library path.
