autprx32.dll is a 32-bit Microsoft Remote Automation component used by older Windows applications. If autprx32.dll is missing, Windows is usually reporting that a legacy application was incompletely installed, moved without its dependencies, or damaged by cleanup or security software.
The safest repair is to identify the application requesting the file and repair or reinstall that application from its original installer. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into a Windows folder.

What is autprx32.dll?
autprx32.dll is described as Microsoft Remote Automation Proxy for Windows NT(TM) Operating System. It was the client-side proxy in Microsoft Remote Automation, an obsolete system that allowed older OLE and COM Automation applications to communicate with remote Automation servers.
Remote Automation installations could also include components such as:

Microsoft lists autprx32.dll among unsupported Visual Basic 6 runtime files. It is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL, and it is not part of the supported VB6 runtime files shipped with current Windows versions. Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 support policy also explains that VB6 components on 64-bit Windows run through WOW64.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact parent program. The error may come from an old business application, database front end, engineering tool, installer, or another program that used Remote Automation.
Why the error appears
You may see messages such as:
autprx32.dll was not foundautprx32.dll is missingCannot find autprx32.dllError loading autprx32.dllCannot register autprx32.dll- An access violation involving
autprx32.dll
The most useful clue is the program named in the error window. That program is the primary repair target.

Common causes include:
- The application was installed incompletely.
- A legacy Automation component was not selected during setup.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion removed application files.
- The program was copied to a new computer instead of being installed.
- A 32-bit application is being run on a system or environment that does not support its older dependencies.
- Windows or the storage drive has broader corruption.
- The application is no longer compatible with the current Windows version.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application
Start with the application named in the error. If the message appears during startup, note which shortcut, scheduled task, document, or service launched it.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
A successful repair normally means the program opens without the missing-file message. If the error remains, return to the same page and use Reset only if the program’s documentation says its local settings and data can be safely recreated. Resetting may remove application preferences.
Some older programs do not expose a Repair button. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If there is no repair option, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original vendor media. Preserve the installer, license information, application data, and configuration files before uninstalling.

Fix 2: Reinstall the original Remote Automation components
If the program came from Visual Basic, Visual Studio, Visual FoxPro, or another development product, use the matching original installation media.
- Locate the original CD, network installer, deployment package, or supported vendor installer.
- Start
Setup.exeusing Run as administrator. - Choose Modify, Custom, or Add/Remove Components, if offered.
- Look for Automation, Remote Automation, OLE, Visual Basic runtime, or related legacy components.
- Install the components selected by the original application’s setup instructions.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the calling application.
Do not assume that installing every Visual Basic or Visual Studio component is appropriate. The exact parent application and its original deployment instructions matter.
Microsoft provides an official Visual Basic 6 Service Pack 6 cumulative update, named VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. It is an x86 update for VB6 SP6, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed standalone replacement for autprx32.dll or as proof that Remote Automation is included.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old executable or DLL because legacy files can have outdated metadata or behavior.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
autprx32.dll, the affected application, or its installer. - Review the detected file path and detection details.
- If the file came from a trusted, intact installer, follow the Windows Security option to restore or allow it.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application afterward.
- Run a new scan and test the application.
Do not restore an arbitrary copy merely because its filename matches. If every copy from the installer triggers a security detection, stop and investigate the installer and its digital signature. Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL to run.

A clean reinstall from trusted original media is preferable to restoring a loose file from quarantine.
Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit compatibility
autprx32.dll is a 32-bit component. A 32-bit application can generally run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but the application still needs its complete 32-bit dependencies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Check the application’s compatibility as follows:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for only if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Test Windows 7 or Windows XP compatibility modes one at a time.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
Compatibility mode cannot create missing files or repair a broken installation. It only changes selected compatibility behavior.
If the program is 16-bit rather than 32-bit, modern 64-bit Windows cannot run it natively. A program that depends on an even older installer or runtime may require a supported replacement or a controlled virtual machine running an older Windows environment.
Should the file go in System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not manually place autprx32.dll in either folder as a first-line repair.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains many native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. The names are counterintuitive. Putting a DLL in the wrong location can create additional loading or architecture problems.
The correct location is determined by the application’s installer and configuration. A properly designed installer may place the file in the application directory or register it through the legacy setup process. Copying the file into a Windows directory does not restore companion files, dependencies, permissions, or COM configuration.
Does regsvr32 apply?
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works only with DLLs that provide the registration entry points expected by the utility.
Historical Microsoft setup documentation includes this command for the original Remote Automation installation:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

That does not mean manually registering a copied file is the correct repair. Registration cannot install the missing Automation Manager, restore dependencies, or recreate the application’s complete configuration.
If the original installer specifically instructs you to register the file, use the correct command prompt and path.
On 64-bit Windows, register a 32-bit DLL with the 32-bit utility:

A successful command displays a message that registration succeeded. If you receive an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, the DLL is not self-registerable through that command. If you receive an architecture error, the wrong regsvr32.exe was used or the file does not match the application architecture.
Do not repeatedly register files copied from download archives.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they normally will not recreate an application-specific, unsupported Remote Automation DLL.
Run them when you also see damaged Windows features, unexplained system errors, update failures, or multiple missing system files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its System File Checker guidance explains the repair process.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without fixing the application, return to the application’s original installer rather than repeating the scans indefinitely.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can consume time. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected legacy application remains the definitive fix for an application-specific missing DLL.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the error points to hardware
Drivers are not the normal cause of a missing autprx32.dll, but an older application can also fail after a hardware change, graphics update, storage-controller issue, or device installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the error, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Storage controllers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove an otherwise working driver solely because autprx32.dll is missing. Driver repair is relevant only when Device Manager shows a problem or the application also reports a hardware-related failure.
Finding the right driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, package versions, and compatibility repeatedly. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies what it finds, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns this DLL.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery only for a recent change
If the program worked recently and the failure began after an uninstall, cleanup operation, migration, or update, System Restore may help if a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore does not replace a proper application reinstall and does not restore personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, do not create one expecting it to recover the missing file.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
A standalone copy from an unofficial DLL archive may have:
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible historical build
- Altered metadata
- Malware
- Missing companion files
- Dependencies that are not installed
The same filename does not prove authenticity. There is no current Microsoft standalone redistributable specifically offered as an autprx32.dll download.

Use the original application installer, trusted vendor media, or official Microsoft material relevant to the parent product instead.
Do not clean the registry blindly
Registry-cleaning utilities cannot reliably reconstruct Remote Automation’s original COM configuration. Deleting entries can make a legacy application harder to repair.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are unlikely to fix this specific error unless the application reports a separate missing dependency from one of those technologies.
Do not copy the file between computers
Moving only autprx32.dll leaves behind the original application’s registration, companion executables, configuration, and other dependencies. Install the program properly on the new computer.
If reinstalling still fails
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm the exact application named by the error.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 16-bit.
- Verify that the installer completed without errors.
- Check antivirus Protection history.
- Confirm that the application was not copied from another computer.
- Install the application under an account with administrative permission.
- Try the application’s documented compatibility settings.
- Run DISM and SFC if Windows itself appears damaged.
- Check Event Viewer for an application error at the same time as the failure.
- Contact the application vendor for a supported replacement or deployment package.
For business-critical software that cannot run on current Windows, preserve the original environment in a controlled virtual machine rather than replacing DLLs in system folders. A vendor-supported updated application is preferable when available.
Frequently asked questions
Is autprx32.dll a Windows system file?
It is a genuine historical Microsoft component, but it is not a normal supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. It belongs to obsolete Microsoft Remote Automation.
Is it part of Visual Basic?
It is associated with legacy Visual Basic and Visual Studio-era Remote Automation installations, but the filename alone cannot identify the exact product that installed it.
Can Visual FoxPro require it?
Older Visual FoxPro applications that used Remote Automation may require it. Repair the specific Visual FoxPro application or its original deployment components rather than installing a random DLL.
Should I install Visual Basic 6 Service Pack 6?
The official VB6 SP6 update is relevant only when the application requires that update. It is not a guaranteed replacement for autprx32.dll.
Will SFC fix the error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. autprx32.dll is an unsupported application-era component, so repairing or reinstalling the parent application is more likely to work.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy does the error occur on 64-bit Windows?
The application and DLL are 32-bit. They may run through WOW64, but all required 32-bit components must be installed correctly. A 64-bit replacement DLL is not an appropriate solution.
Is a copy with the right filename safe?
No. A matching filename does not establish that the file came from Microsoft or the original application installer. Use trusted installation media and scan the complete installer.
When is a virtual machine appropriate?
Use one when the application is business-critical, has no supported replacement, and remains incompatible after a proper reinstall. Preserve the older Windows environment in a controlled, isolated configuration rather than repeatedly modifying current Windows system folders.
