The AVADirect X79 Gaming PC reviewed by HotHardware on June 7, 2012 was a boutique showcase desktop, not a mass-market model. Its $5,096.50 configuration combined an overclocked six-core Intel Core i7-3960X, 16GB of DDR3, three EVGA GeForce GTX 680 cards in SLI, RAID storage and a SilverStone Fortress FT02 case. It produced extraordinary frame rates for its era, but the review also recorded a replacement CPU and RAID problems. In 2026, it is best understood as a historical enthusiast PC or restoration project—not a sensible modern gaming purchase unless the price and intended use are unusually favorable.
What the AVADirect X79 system was
AVADirect sold this as a configurable custom PC rather than a permanently fixed retail model. HotHardware’s tested machine carried model identifier DGS-I7-X793SLICFX and represented an unusually expensive, heavily customized 2012 build. AVADirect’s value proposition was letting buyers select enthusiast components, cooling, storage and graphics hardware through a boutique builder rather than choosing from a narrow OEM specification.
The original review and specification page are available from HotHardware. The following figures describe that particular review configuration, not every system sold under a similar name.

The review material contains conflicting references to the power supply: one configuration listing names a LEPA 1000W unit, while another passage discusses a Seasonic Platinum 1000W supply. Treat the exact PSU as unresolved until the machine itself, an original invoice or an archived configuration record confirms it.

Why it was high-end in 2012
Intel’s flagship enthusiast platform
The Core i7-3960X was Intel’s flagship Sandy Bridge-E desktop processor. X79 supplied the platform’s large PCI Express budget and quad-channel DDR3 memory architecture, making it a natural foundation for several graphics cards and high-end storage. This was enthusiast hardware aimed at buyers willing to pay for the top configuration, not a typical gaming tower.
Three GTX 680 cards
NVIDIA’s Kepler-based GTX 680 was a high-performance 2012 GPU. Three cards could target very high resolutions and demanding DirectX 11 workloads, but SLI performance depended on a game profile, driver behavior, resolution and frame-pacing characteristics. Aggregate shader and memory resources never guaranteed three times the speed of one card.
Fortress FT02 design, airflow and usability
The SilverStone Fortress FT02 was central to the build. Its motherboard was rotated so expansion cards stood vertically, while three large fans at the bottom pushed air upward through the enclosure. Fan controllers offered high and low settings, and both side panels used sound-dampening material. The tall, heavy case provided room for three graphics cards, multiple drives and orderly cable routing.

HotHardware found the machine relatively quiet for a tri-SLI desktop and praised its clean construction and cable management. That judgment was relative to a very powerful 2012 system; it does not predict the noise of a fourteen-year-old example whose fans may be worn or clogged. Case layout, front-panel wiring, drive mounts and fan condition should all be checked before reuse. The design and construction discussion appears on the case page and the cooling and acoustics page.

What tri-SLI did—and did not—deliver
The three-card array was spectacular in titles with mature SLI profiles. Dirt 3 demonstrated substantial gains, and several synthetic tests rewarded the additional GPUs. Other games scaled less effectively or offered no worthwhile benefit. Driver profiles, API behavior, CPU overhead and frame pacing could matter more than the theoretical total GPU count.
That explains why the AVADirect generally led contemporary graphics charts while showing smaller or workload-dependent advantages in broader system tests. HotHardware also compared it with the Maingear X79 SHIFT Super Stock, systems using three Radeon HD 7970 cards in CrossFire, and other premium desktops. The AVADirect’s lead came from this specific combination of overclocked Sandy Bridge-E hardware, three GTX 680s, SSD storage and software able to exploit multiple GPUs; it was not a universal performance guarantee.

The review unit was not trouble-free. A faulty CPU caused stability problems and AVADirect replaced it. RAID issues also occurred, and the reviewer suggested that at least some instability could have been related to the aggressive overclock. Those incidents do not prove every AVADirect X79 machine was unreliable, but they show how an overclocked processor, RAID controller and three-GPU configuration increased troubleshooting complexity.

More than 14 years later, every major subsystem is legacy hardware: the X79 board, i7-3960X, GTX 680 cards, OCZ SSDs, Seagate hard drives, power supply and case fans. The machine can still be interesting, but its value depends on condition and purpose rather than the original price.
Storage and data safety
The two-SSD RAID 0 boot array has no redundancy: failure of either 120GB drive can make the operating-system volume inaccessible. RAID 1 on the two hard drives can tolerate a single-drive failure, but it is not a backup. For ordinary use, preserve any data, document the controller’s RAID mode and replace the old boot array with a modern single SSD. Do not reinstall blindly before checking whether the RAID volume contains recoverable files.

Graphics, power and heat
GTX 680 cards are historically significant but inefficient by modern standards and lack the capabilities of current GPUs. Modern games cannot be expected to scale across three of them, and a single contemporary GPU usually offers better performance, support and power efficiency. Three aging high-end cards also add heat, fan noise and failure points. Verify that every card remains stable under load, inspect connectors and check the actual PSU model, age and condition.
CPU, software and displays
The six-core i7-3960X can handle period games and general desktop work, but modern CPU-heavy games and newer graphics cards may expose its age. The original Windows 7 installation should not be treated as a secure current environment. Check operating-system support, drivers, display outputs and adapters for the exact GTX 680 models instead of assuming compatibility with a modern monitor.
Inspection and restoration checklist
- Record the hardware. Photograph labels, expansion cards, storage wiring, RAID controller settings and the PSU before changing anything.
- Reset the overclock. Test at stock CPU and memory settings first. Resetting firmware can alter RAID boot settings, so document the existing configuration.
- Check storage health. Image or copy important data before stress testing. Treat RAID 0 as disposable until both SSDs pass diagnostics.
- Test each GPU separately. Confirm video output, temperatures and stability, then test SLI only after one-card operation is sound.
- Inspect cooling. Remove dust, verify all three bottom fans and check for failing bearings, blocked filters or damaged mounts.
- Verify power delivery. Identify the PSU from its label, inspect PCIe cables and replace it if age, damage or uncertain provenance makes its safety questionable.
- Choose the goal. A period-correct Windows 7/DirectX 11 installation, a benchmark project and a modern daily-use PC require different restoration choices.
Who should buy, restore or skip it?
| Reader’s goal | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Historical PC collecting | Potentially worthwhile if originality, condition and documentation matter more than current speed. |
| 2012-era gaming or legacy benchmarking | Suitable after stock-clock testing, storage checks and GPU validation. |
| Reusing the Fortress FT02 | Possible, provided modern-board fit, front-panel wiring, GPU clearance, airflow and power connections are verified. |
| Cost-effective modern gaming | Skip the tri-SLI configuration; budget for a modern single GPU and possibly a replacement platform. |
| Data recovery | Do not experiment on the RAID arrays first; make preservation and professional recovery the priority. |
Do not assume the three-year warranty from the 2012 review still applies, and do not assign a 2026 resale price without checking current, listing-specific evidence. The available historical sources establish the original $5,096.50 price, not today’s market value. AVADirect remains an active custom-PC builder at its official site, but its current catalog uses substantially newer components; a modern system would be a successor, not an upgrade of this X79 machine. The original archived entry is also preserved at AVADirect’s review archive.
