Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. The film’s most consequential turns are not limited to the final battle. A five-year collapse, a desperate mission through earlier timelines, two irreversible deaths and Steve Rogers’ choice about his future all redefine what victory means for the Avengers.
Film context before the spoilers
Avengers: Endgame is the conclusion to Marvel Studios’ first 22-film sequence. D23 lists its U.S. release as April 26, 2019, with a 181-minute runtime. Disney’s official movie listing gives the same release date, a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 3 hours 1 minute. D23 also reported that the film became the first in history to surpass $1 billion in its opening weekend.

The five revelations below are ordered by consequence to the story and its characters, not by an official ranking. Together they answer the questions viewers usually have after hearing the title: what happens after the snap, whether the Avengers can reverse it, which heroes die and what becomes of Captain America.
1. The world stays broken for five years after Thanos’s snap
The story does not jump straight to a solution
Thanos’s snap removes half of all life. Rather than treating that event as a short-lived cliffhanger, Endgame advances the story five years. The surviving Avengers remain focused on the people who vanished, but the world has continued aging and changing during their absence. The gap is therefore part of the film’s reality, not a brief pause before the next action sequence.
#1 Best Overall
This time jump changes the emotional starting point. The survivors are not simply waiting in a clean status quo for a rematch. Their lives and relationships have been shaped by years without the missing half of the population. Any plan to reverse the snap must confront the fact that time has passed for everyone who remained.
Why the five-year gap matters
The missing people are eventually brought back, but the return does not erase the interval in which they were gone. The film’s central problem is consequently twofold: recover those removed by the snap and deal with the consequences of a world that had to continue without them. That is why the opening premise carries more weight than a conventional “heroes lose, then win” setup.
For the Avengers, the five-year aftermath also establishes the scale of the stakes in the later mission. They are not trying to prevent an abstract catastrophe. They are trying to undo a loss that has already governed half a decade of human history.
2. The Avengers use time travel to retrieve the Infinity Stones
The plan reaches into earlier moments
The surviving team develops a way to travel to earlier points in history and collect the Infinity Stones. The objective is not merely to attack Thanos again; it is to assemble the Stones so their power can reverse the snap. This turns the plot into a recovery mission through moments the audience has already seen, with the Avengers attempting to change the present by retrieving tools from the past.
Each Stone is needed for the reversal, so the plan depends on bringing the collection together rather than finding a single replacement weapon. The mission’s structure also creates a strict responsibility: once the Stones have been used, they must be returned to the timelines from which they were taken. That obligation becomes important to Steve Rogers’ ending.
Hulk reverses the snap
After the Stones are recovered, Hulk uses them to bring back the people who disappeared. The return confirms that Thanos’s act can be undone, but it does not restore every loss caused by the attempt to do so. The reversal repairs the central disappearance while leaving the film’s permanent sacrifices in place.
Thanos follows the plan into the future
The Avengers’ time-heist strategy is exposed to Thanos. He follows the plan into the future and attacks the team’s headquarters, transforming a carefully staged retrieval into an immediate battle for survival. The headquarters assault is the point at which the mission’s danger becomes unavoidable: the Avengers must defend the restored population while facing the force responsible for the original snap.
This is why the time travel is more than a plot device for revisiting earlier scenes. It gives the Avengers a path to reverse the snap, but it also gives Thanos a route to their present. The same plan that creates a chance of restoration brings the final confrontation to the heroes’ own base.
3. Natasha Romanoff dies to obtain the Soul Stone
The Vormir choice has only one acceptable cost
On Vormir, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton learn that the Soul Stone requires the sacrifice of someone loved. The mission therefore cannot be completed by simply locating the Stone or defeating a guard. One of the two Avengers must give up their life so the other can claim it.
Natasha and Clint struggle over who will make that sacrifice. Their conflict is not a disagreement about tactics; both understand that the Stone’s price is permanent and that the other person is trying to pay it. The scene turns a technical requirement of the heist into a direct test of their loyalty and history.
Natasha makes the sacrifice
Natasha falls to her death, allowing Clint to secure the Soul Stone. Her death is therefore directly tied to the Avengers’ chance of reversing the snap. Without the sacrifice, the Stone cannot be obtained and the larger plan cannot proceed.
The later use of the Stones does not restore Natasha. The people removed by Thanos return after the five-year gap, but her death remains one of the film’s permanent losses. That distinction is essential: reversing the snap is not the same as reversing every death that occurs during the effort to undo it.

Why this spoiler changes the mission
Natasha’s death gives the time-heist a cost that cannot be hidden behind a triumphant outcome. The Avengers succeed in gathering the Stones, yet the success is inseparable from losing one of their own. Her sacrifice also prevents the ending from becoming a total reset in which every consequence disappears once the Stones are activated.
4. The returned heroes defeat Thanos, and Tony Stark dies using the Stones
The snap’s victims return before the decisive battle
Once Hulk uses the Infinity Stones, the heroes and other people removed by Thanos return. Their restoration changes the balance of the conflict just as Thanos and his forces attack the Avengers’ headquarters. The battle that follows brings the surviving team together with those who have reappeared, creating the film’s largest confrontation.
The restoration does not make the fight easy. Thanos has followed the Avengers’ plan into the future, and his army reaches the heroes before they can treat the reversal as a finished victory. The returned characters therefore come back into an active war rather than a peaceful aftermath.

During the battle, Tony Stark uses the Infinity Stones against Thanos and his army. The act defeats Thanos and the invading forces, but the power kills Tony. His death is the final price of ending the threat: the Avengers win the battle, yet the hero whose actions deliver that victory cannot survive the use of the Stones.
This answers the direct question, “Does Iron Man die in Endgame?” Yes. Tony’s death is permanent within the film’s ending, not a temporary disappearance waiting for the next snap. The Avengers’ victory depends on his final use of the Stones, making his sacrifice part of the mechanism that saves the universe.
The funeral closes the immediate farewell
Tony’s funeral follows the battle and serves as the film’s immediate farewell to him. It gives the surviving characters a moment to acknowledge what the victory cost instead of ending on the defeat of Thanos alone. The ceremony also places Tony’s death alongside Natasha’s as a reminder that restoring the vanished population does not restore every Avenger lost during the mission.
The emotional shape of the ending comes from that imbalance. The universe is saved and the snap is reversed, but the people who paid the price for that outcome remain gone. The film’s resolution is therefore both a triumph over Thanos and a permanent change to the original team.

Steve’s final mission is to return the Stones
After the battle, Steve Rogers takes responsibility for returning the Infinity Stones to the timelines from which the Avengers removed them. This is a practical requirement of the time-heist plan, but it becomes the doorway to his personal ending. Instead of simply returning to the present and resuming his old role, Steve chooses a different future.
He stays in the past with Peggy Carter
Steve remains in the past to live with Peggy Carter. His decision means he does not continue as the same permanently active Captain America who fought through the film’s earlier conflicts. He has completed the mission that brought him back through time and then chooses a private life with Peggy.
This answers another common question: “Does Captain America go back in time?” He does, first to return the Stones, and then he stays in the past rather than coming back to lead the Avengers in the old way. The choice is quiet compared with the battle, but it is one of the film’s most consequential character resolutions.
The shield passes to Sam Wilson
Steve later gives his shield and the Captain America duties to Sam Wilson. The transfer makes clear that Steve is not merely taking a vacation from the role. He is handing the responsibility to another hero and accepting that the future of Captain America belongs to Sam.

Steve’s ending therefore resolves his story through succession rather than another fight. The original Captain America’s future is a life with Peggy, while the symbol and duties he carried continue with Sam. The Avengers’ victory changes not only the world they save but also who represents them afterward.
How the five spoilers fit together
Endgame links its major revelations in a precise chain. The snap creates a five-year aftermath; that aftermath motivates the attempt to retrieve the Stones; the retrieval requires Natasha’s sacrifice; the restored population makes the final battle possible; Tony’s use of the Stones ends Thanos’s attack at the cost of his life; and Steve’s return of the Stones leads to his decision to leave the role and pass the shield to Sam.
That chain explains why the film’s ending cannot be reduced to “the Avengers win.” The vanished return, but Natasha and Tony do not. The enemy is defeated, but the original team does not remain unchanged. Steve preserves the future of Captain America by stepping away from it, while Sam takes on the responsibility. The result is a victory that repairs the snap without erasing the sacrifices and choices made to achieve it.
