avgcfg.dll Missing: Repair Legacy AVG Safely on Windows 11 and 10

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

avgcfg.dll is a legacy AVG Configuration Module, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to repair the AVG installation that originally supplied it, or remove obsolete AVG software and install a supported security product rather than downloading an isolated DLL.

What this file actually does

avgcfg.dll is a Dynamic Link Library associated with the old AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus System from GRISOFT, s.r.o. Historical records also place the file in AVG 7.5 installations.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It provided configuration functions for AVG components. An old AVG executable, tray component, updater, service, or startup entry may request the file when Windows starts or when AVG launches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical AVG paths included locations such as:

C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavgcfg.dll
C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG7avgcfg.dll

Those paths are useful clues, not instructions for manually copying the file. avgcfg.dll does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The error may appear as:

  • “avgcfg.dll was not found”
  • “avgcfg.dll is missing”
  • “avgcfg.dll could not be loaded”
  • “This application failed to start because avgcfg.dll was not found”
  • “avgcfg.dll is not designed to run on Windows”

The exact wording depends on the Windows loader and the program requesting the file.

Causes and symptoms

What you observe Most likely cause Correct response
The error appears when AVG starts Incomplete or damaged AVG installation Repair AVG, then reinstall if repair fails
It began after an AVG update The update left mixed or missing files Repair or reinstall the matching AVG release
It appeared after antivirus cleanup AVG or another security product quarantined the file Check quarantine, then reinstall if uncertain
It appears after uninstalling AVG A stale startup entry or service still points to AVG Remove the old startup reference
A very old computer shows the error Legacy AVG 7.x is incomplete or incompatible Restore compatible media or replace the obsolete product
The error appears in another application That program may be loading an abandoned AVG component Identify and repair or remove the calling program
Copying a DLL fixes one message but creates another Wrong version or architecture Undo the copy and reinstall the owning AVG product
Windows has other corruption symptoms General Windows component damage Run DISM, then SFC

Before changing anything

First determine whether AVG is still installed.

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Search for AVG.
  5. Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features if it is not listed in Settings.

If a current AVG product is installed, repair that installation first. If only an old AVG 7.x entry or an unknown startup item remains, do not try to rebuild it with a random DLL.

Check the reported file location as well. In Task Manager, a startup entry can sometimes be traced to its executable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Right-click an AVG-related item.
  4. Choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Note whether the path belongs to the installed AVG directory.

A genuine historical copy should be in an AVG installation folder, not a random temporary directory or a Windows system directory.

Fix 1: Repair the installed AVG product

This is the best first fix when AVG is still installed.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the product.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. When the AVG Setup window opens, select Repair.
  8. Follow the prompts.
  9. Restart Windows if requested.
  10. Test AVG again.

On some systems, the same option is available through:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the AVG product.
  4. Choose Change or Uninstall.
  5. Select Repair in AVG Setup.

How to tell whether repair worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • AVG opens without the avgcfg.dll message.
  • The AVG interface displays its normal status.
  • The error does not return after restarting Windows.
  • The AVG installation directory contains its expected files.
  • No AVG-related startup error appears in Event Viewer or during login.

Do not replace the repaired file manually. The installer must supply the correct file for that particular AVG generation and installation architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check AVG quarantine

A security product may have deleted or quarantined a file after detecting corruption, tampering, or suspicious behavior.

Open the installed AVG interface and look for Quarantine, Quarantine Vault, or History. The exact label depends on the product generation.

If avgcfg.dll is listed:

  1. Check the original path shown in the quarantine record.
  2. Confirm that the path belongs to the installed AVG directory.
  3. Confirm that the file was associated with the genuine AVG installation.
  4. Restore it only if the installation is otherwise intact and you trust the detection result.
  5. Restart Windows and test AVG.

Do not restore a copy from an unknown location merely because its filename matches.

  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

If the file is quarantined repeatedly, do not keep restoring it. Run a full security scan, inspect the installation for tampering, and reinstall AVG from its official installation files. Repeated quarantine can indicate a damaged installation, malware, or a file that no longer matches the product.

Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall AVG cleanly

Use this method when Repair is unavailable, fails, or the AVG installation is clearly incomplete.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the AVG product.
  3. Select its three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Complete the AVG removal wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. If normal removal failed, download AVG’s official removal tool, commonly identified as AVG Clear, from AVG Support.
  8. Run the removal tool as an administrator.
  9. Follow its prompts and restart again.
  10. Download the installer from AVG’s official installation-files page.
  11. Install the supported AVG product.
  12. Restart Windows if prompted.
  13. Run a full security scan.

AVG’s current free installer is identified in its instructions as avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe. Do not obtain an installer or replacement DLL from a file-collection site.

When an old AVG 7.x installation needs a different decision

Modern AVG may not restore the exact binaries used by AVG 7.0 or AVG 7.5. If the error belongs to an obsolete installation, you have two safer choices:

  • Restore the original compatible AVG installation media and use it only on a system where that legacy software is genuinely required.
  • Remove the abandoned AVG software and install a currently supported AVG product, or use Microsoft Defender on a supported Windows installation.

Do not mix avgcfg.dll files from different AVG generations. A file associated with AVG 7.0 is not automatically suitable for AVG 7.5, and neither should be assumed to work with a current AVG release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Remove a stale AVG startup entry

If AVG has already been removed but Windows still shows the error during startup, the missing file may not be needed by any current application. A leftover startup reference may simply be trying to launch deleted AVG software.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for AVG, Grisoft, or an unfamiliar entry whose path points to an old AVG folder.
  4. Right-click the entry.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Disabling a startup item does not delete the program. It only prevents that entry from launching automatically.

Check installed services

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for clearly identified AVG or Grisoft services.
  5. Open Properties and note the executable path.
  6. If the service belongs to software you intentionally removed, use the AVG removal process rather than deleting random registry values.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

Avoid registry-cleaner utilities and manual deletion of unfamiliar services. If the startup item is not clearly associated with AVG, investigate its executable path before changing it.

Fix 5: Check permissions, disk space, and installer interference

AVG repair can fail when Setup cannot overwrite files or registry entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these conditions:

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Confirm that the system drive has free space.
  3. Temporarily close other installers and security-management utilities.
  4. Right-click the AVG installer and choose Run as administrator.
  5. If the installer is on removable media, copy it to the local drive first.
  6. Restart Windows before trying the repair again.
  7. Run the installation from fresh official media.

If repair repeatedly fails, Windows Installer problems, damaged installation media, restrictive permissions, or interference from security software may be involved. In that situation, use the official AVG removal tool and perform a clean installation instead of repeatedly copying files.

Fix 6: Verify the file’s location and architecture

avgcfg.dll was historically listed as a 32-bit DLL. That does not mean every copy has the same version or that a 32-bit file belongs in a Windows system directory.

Use these rules:

  • Let the AVG installer choose the destination.
  • Do not copy a 32-bit AVG DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
  • Do not replace a 64-bit application file with a 32-bit file.
  • Do not mix AVG 7.0 and AVG 7.5 files.
  • Treat a copy found in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory as suspicious until verified.
  • Check the file’s Properties window for its description and publisher information where available.

The expected description is AVG Configuration Module, with the historical publisher shown as GRISOFT, s.r.o. Public records do not establish that every historical copy has a valid digital signature, so a signature alone is not a complete diagnosis.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM do not normally restore avgcfg.dll, because it is a third-party AVG file rather than a protected Windows component. Use these commands only when you also have broader symptoms, such as damaged Windows features, failed updates, or other missing system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry the AVG repair or reinstall.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again. If the avgcfg.dll error remains, repair the AVG installation because SFC is not expected to supply this file.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed rarely repairs an application-specific DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results, and its free scan shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling AVG remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to AVG.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

There is no verified evidence that avgcfg.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running commands such as these is therefore not an appropriate first repair:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 avgcfg.dll
regsvr32 C:PathToavgcfg.dll

A registration error does not restore the missing file and can distract from the real problem, which is usually an incomplete AVG installation or stale startup entry.

Fix 9: Do not install unrelated runtimes or drivers

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not justified fixes when the message specifically names avgcfg.dll. Install one of those components only when the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime or the owning application’s official requirements call for it.

Device Manager is also not a normal repair path for this file. It is useful only if the affected AVG installation is tied to a separate hardware or driver problem.

If a separate driver error is present:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of identifying which drivers are stale when several devices are involved; its free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling AVG when avgcfg.dll belongs to that application.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A standalone DLL download is not an official AVG repair method. It can fail because the file has:

  • The wrong AVG generation
  • The wrong architecture
  • A mismatched dependency set
  • A damaged or modified binary
  • An incorrect path
  • No relationship to the program currently requesting it

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can create version conflicts and security exposure. It may also hide a failed uninstall, malware infection, or corrupted installation.

Use the original AVG installation media, AVG’s official installation files, or a supported Windows security product instead.

Final decision tree

Use this order:

  1. AVG is currently installed: run AVG Setup’s Repair option.
  2. Repair fails: uninstall AVG, restart, use AVG’s official removal tool if needed, then reinstall.
  3. AVG was already removed: disable or remove the stale AVG startup entry after confirming its path.
  4. The file was quarantined: restore only when the path and installation are clearly genuine; otherwise reinstall.
  5. The system has wider corruption: run DISM, then SFC.
  6. The installation is AVG 7.x: use compatible original media or replace it with supported security software.
  7. The error returns after reinstalling: investigate quarantine, permissions, disk health, malware, and leftover startup references.

FAQ

Is avgcfg.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party AVG configuration DLL associated historically with AVG 7.0 and also seen in AVG 7.5 installations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. The correct location is determined by the AVG installer. Copying it to a Windows directory can cause conflicts and does not repair the owning installation.

Is AVG 7.0 compatible with Windows 11?

The available file records concern obsolete AVG releases. Do not assume that AVG 7.0 or its DLLs are supported on current Windows versions. Replace abandoned software with a supported security product unless a specific legacy environment requires the original program.

Can SFC restore avgcfg.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not ordinary third-party AVG files.

Should I register avgcfg.dll with regsvr32?

No. There is no verified evidence that this file exposes the registration entry point required by regsvr32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error appears after AVG was uninstalled?

Look for a stale startup item or service that still references the old AVG directory. Disable the confirmed obsolete entry, then restart Windows.

What if the error returns immediately after reinstalling AVG?

Check quarantine, run a full security scan, verify administrator permissions and disk space, and confirm that the installer completed successfully. A damaged disk or security-software interference can remove or block files again.
