The 60-second answer

avgcore.dll is an old third-party application file named AVG Scanning Engine. It belonged to the historical AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus System, published by GRISOFT, s.r.o. It is not a Windows file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, driver, or normal system DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download a random copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. The safest fix is to identify the old AVG installation that is requesting the file, repair or reinstall that application, or remove the obsolete installation completely. If AVG is still required, install a current supported AVG product from AVG’s official installation files page.

If the message appears after AVG was uninstalled, the file may not be the real problem. A leftover startup entry or service may still be trying to launch an old AVG component.

What is avgcore.dll?

avgcore.dll is associated with the scanning engine used by AVG 7.0, an old Grisoft-era antivirus release. Historical installations commonly kept AVG files in a folder similar to:

C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG7

The exact location could vary according to the AVG edition, Windows version, language, or installation choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction matters because Windows repair tools cannot normally recreate application files. avgcore.dll is not protected as a Windows system component, so copying it into a Windows folder does not make it a legitimate Windows file and may cause version or architecture conflicts.

The error can mean several different things:

  • The AVG installation is damaged or incomplete.
  • An AVG update or uninstall left behind a startup reference.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • Another DLL required by avgcore.dll is missing.
  • A stale backup or cleanup utility removed part of the program.
  • The application is too old for the current Windows installation.
  • A program unrelated to AVG is incorrectly requesting the file.

First identify the program showing the error

Before replacing anything, find out which executable is requesting avgcore.dll.

Read the title bar and message carefully. Windows may identify the application in the error window. Also check whether the message appears:

  • Immediately after signing in to Windows
  • When opening an old AVG control panel
  • When starting another legacy program
  • When launching a game or utility
  • During an uninstall or update

Then check whether AVG or an old Grisoft folder remains installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check installed applications

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for AVG.
  5. Also look for older entries that mention Grisoft or AVG 7.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Search for AVG or Grisoft.

You can also check the traditional list:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for AVG or Grisoft software.

If the error identifies a current AVG installation, repair or reinstall that application. If it points to an obsolete AVG installation, complete removal is usually safer than trying to revive AVG 7 on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning AVG application

This is the most likely solution when AVG is still installed and the error appears while opening AVG.

Try the Windows repair option

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the AVG entry.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Restart Windows and test AVG again.

Not every AVG edition exposes a Windows Repair button. If there is no Repair option, open Control Panel:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the AVG installation.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent maintenance option.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart the computer.

If the repair completes but the same message returns, reinstall the complete owning application rather than replacing only avgcore.dll. A complete installer restores the files that belong together and is more likely to repair missing dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For current AVG software, use AVG’s official installation files page. Do not assume that a current AVG installer will restore the historical avgcore.dll; current official documentation does not establish that this legacy file remains part of modern AVG.

How to confirm the repair

The repair worked if:

  • AVG opens without the missing-file message.
  • The same executable no longer produces the error.
  • The AVG service starts normally.
  • Windows no longer displays the error during sign-in.

If the error appears before AVG opens, or the installer itself fails, use AVG’s removal tool instead.

Fix 2: Remove old AVG completely with AVG Clear

If AVG is damaged, partially uninstalled, or too old to run correctly, use AVG’s official removal process. AVG provides a removal utility called avg_av_clear.exe. Its documented workflow runs in Safe Mode and can remove the old installation before reinstalling a supported product.

Use AVG’s official removal tool

  1. Open AVG’s official support page for uninstalling AVG software.
  2. Download avg_av_clear.exe from that page.
  3. Save the file somewhere easy to find, such as the Desktop.
  4. Right-click the downloaded file.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  7. When prompted, allow the tool to restart Windows in Safe Mode.
  8. After the tool opens, select Remove to uninstall AVG completely.
  9. If you intend to continue using AVG, select the Remove & Reinstall workflow when offered.
  10. Restart Windows normally when the tool finishes.

The exact screens can vary between AVG products, but the important points are to use AVG’s own removal tool, allow its Safe Mode workflow, and reboot afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the tool cannot remove the installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run avg_av_clear.exe again as administrator.
  3. Follow the Safe Mode prompt.
  4. Remove any remaining AVG entry from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  5. Restart again.

Do not delete random folders or registry entries simply because their names contain avgcore.dll. Manual deletion can leave more broken startup references behind.

Install a supported antivirus product

Once the legacy installation is removed, scan the computer with Windows Security or install a current antivirus package from the vendor’s official website. If you want AVG, use its current official installation page rather than trying to rebuild AVG 7 from individual files.

A modern Windows installation should not remain dependent on an obsolete AVG 7 installation. If the old program is no longer needed, removing it and rebooting is the cleanest resolution.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed avgcore.dll because it was damaged, suspicious, or identified during malware cleanup. Do not immediately disable protection or restore a file from an unverified source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Windows Security quarantine

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an entry referring to AVG, avgcore.dll, or the executable that produced the error.

If another antivirus product is installed, open that product and inspect its quarantine area instead.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

  • The file clearly belongs to the original AVG installation.
  • The detection is confirmed to be a false positive.
  • The original AVG program is still required.
  • You can repair or reinstall the complete application immediately afterward.

If the detection relates to malware or the file’s origin is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official installer. Never restore an unverified DLL merely to make an error disappear.

Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is missing

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that avgcore.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found avgcore.dll but failed to load another DLL that it needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This often happens after a partial uninstall, incorrect manual copying, or mixing files from different AVG installations.

The safe response is to reinstall the complete owning program. Avoid trying to identify and download individual dependency files from DLL catalogues. A matching application installer supplies the expected files together.

Also check the location of the executable:

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Check the Target field.
  5. Select Open File Location, if available.
  6. Look for an AVG or Grisoft application directory.

If the shortcut points to a deleted folder, remove the shortcut. If it points to a real application, repair or uninstall that application.

Fix 5: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

Historical AVG 7 files were made for the older AVG application environment. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files and dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not attempt to solve this by copying the file between these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Despite their confusing names, these folders are Windows component locations, not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. A DLL belonging to AVG should remain in the AVG program directory and should be installed by the AVG package that owns it.

If an old AVG program is 32-bit and Windows is 64-bit:

  1. Remove the damaged AVG installation.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install a supported current antivirus package.
  4. Use the package intended for your Windows installation.

If the error comes from a very old third-party application, install the correct version of that application instead. Do not mix a DLL from one release with executable files from another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical file catalogues describe avgcore.dll as an old AVG 7 file, but those archives do not provide a vendor-signed verification chain. Treat any version, size, or architecture information from them as archival metadata, not as an installation recommendation.

Fix 6: Remove a stale AVG startup reference

If the error appears every time Windows starts, but AVG has already been removed, Windows is probably trying to launch an obsolete AVG service, scheduled task, or startup entry.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for entries mentioning AVG or Grisoft.
  4. Right-click an obviously obsolete AVG entry.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Disabling a startup item stops it from launching, but it does not remove the underlying program. Complete the AVG removal process as well.

Check Windows Services

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for clearly identified AVG or Grisoft services.
  5. Double-click the service.
  6. Confirm its Path to executable points to an old or missing AVG directory.
  7. If it is clearly obsolete, set Startup type to Disabled.
  8. Select Stop, then Apply and OK.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not disable an unfamiliar service based only on a similar name. If the service belongs to a current security product, leave it alone and use that product’s official uninstall procedure.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type taskschd.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Look for clearly labelled old AVG or Grisoft tasks.
  6. Open the task’s Actions tab and inspect the executable path.
  7. Disable or delete it only if you have confirmed it belongs to the removed AVG installation.

Avoid registry cleaners and avoid deleting registry values just because they contain avgcore.dll. They often remove clues without repairing the underlying installation.

Fix 7: Run Windows component repair only for Windows corruption

Because avgcore.dll is an AVG application file, Windows component repair is not the primary fix. It is still reasonable when other Windows programs also fail, system files are damaged, or the problem began after a failed Windows update.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program again.

These commands repair protected Windows components. They should not be expected to recreate an AVG-owned DLL that was removed from an application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files, test the original program. If the AVG error remains unchanged, return to the AVG repair or removal steps.

Repeatedly running SFC without identifying what changed rarely fixes a broken third-party installation. Outbyte PC Repair can show what the free scan identifies, while repair features require the full version; reinstalling the AVG application remains the definitive fix when its own file is missing.

Fix 8: Do not install unrelated runtimes or drivers

Installing Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver is not a targeted way to restore avgcore.dll. Those packages do not normally supply this AVG-specific file.

Use Windows Features only when the error identifies a Windows feature or the affected application explicitly requires one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the enabled features.
  5. Do not enable random features to solve an AVG DLL error.
  6. Select Cancel unless the owning application’s documentation identifies a required feature.

Drivers are relevant only if the error is accompanied by graphics, audio, network, or device failures. They do not normally restore an AVG scanning-engine DLL.

If you have a separate device problem:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan finds outdated, while installing drivers requires the full version; a driver update will not replace avgcore.dll when the owning AVG installation is the problem.

When System Restore is appropriate

System Restore may help when the error began immediately after an AVG update, cleanup operation, or software removal and a restore point predates that change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Show more restore points, if available.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the change.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the results.
  8. Select Next, then Finish if the restore point is suitable.

System Restore is not guaranteed to restore a complete AVG installation. If it succeeds, repair or remove the old AVG software afterward. If no suitable restore point exists, use AVG Clear instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Avoid these common fixes:

  • Downloading avgcore.dll from a random DLL archive
  • Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64
  • Replacing a 32-bit file with a copy from a different AVG release
  • Running regsvr32 avgcore.dll as a generic repair
  • Disabling antivirus protection to restore an unverified file
  • Deleting registry entries based only on the DLL name
  • Installing DirectX or Visual C++ without evidence of a related dependency problem

A standalone DLL may be the wrong build, modified, unsigned, or paired with incompatible AVG files. Even if it removes the first message, it can leave the installation unstable or conceal a malware problem.

Does regsvr32 fix avgcore.dll?

Normally, no.

Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a tool for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that avgcore.dll is a COM or ActiveX registration DLL.

Running this command:

regsvr32 avgcore.dll

does not install the file or repair AVG. It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL and confirms that the DLL supports registration. For avgcore.dll, repair or reinstall the owning AVG application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a game or unrelated program reports avgcore.dll

A game or unrelated application normally should not need an AVG scanning-engine DLL.

  1. Check the executable path shown by the shortcut.
  2. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
  3. Use Open File Location.
  4. Confirm whether the file is inside an AVG, Grisoft, or expected application directory.
  5. Scan the computer with Windows Security.
  6. Uninstall and reinstall the unrelated application from its official source if its files are damaged.
  7. Do not copy avgcore.dll into the game’s folder unless the game’s verified original installer explicitly contains it.

An unexpected request for an old antivirus DLL can indicate a damaged installer, an obsolete bundled component, or unwanted software. Treat it as a reason to investigate, not as proof that the game needs a downloaded DLL.

FAQ

Is avgcore.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an AVG application DLL associated with the historical AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus System. Windows does not normally need it to start.

Does Windows 11 or Windows 10 support AVG 7?

The available evidence does not establish that AVG 7 is supported on current Windows releases. If an old AVG installation is failing on Windows 10 or Windows 11, remove it and install a currently supported antivirus product instead.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy avgcore.dll into System32?

No. Keep application DLLs with their owning application. Copying this file into a Windows system directory can create path, architecture, and version problems without repairing AVG.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually not for this specific error. Those packages do not supply an AVG-specific scanning-engine DLL. Reinstall the complete AVG application first.

What if the message says “module could not be found”?

That message may indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing avgcore.dll. Reinstall the entire owning application instead of downloading several individual DLLs.

Can I restore avgcore.dll from quarantine?

Only if the file is confirmed to belong to the original AVG installation and the detection is a false positive. Otherwise leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if AVG was already uninstalled?

Use AVG Clear to complete the removal, restart Windows, and disable only clearly identified stale AVG startup entries. This usually resolves startup messages caused by leftover references.

What is the safest final solution?

For an obsolete AVG 7 installation, remove it completely, restart Windows, scan the computer, and install a supported antivirus product if protection is still required.
