avgscan.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded. The file is a historical AVG component, not a Windows system DLL, so the safest fix is to repair the AVG installation or the older application that originally supplied it.

You may see messages such as:

  • “avgscan.dll is missing”
  • “avgscan.dll was not found”
  • “Error loading avgscan.dll”
  • “The specified module could not be found”
  • “This application failed to start because avgscan.dll was not found”
  • “The file avgscan.dll is missing or corrupted”
  • “The program can’t start because avgscan.dll is missing from your computer”

Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of the DLL. First identify which executable is requesting it.

Which fix applies to you

Use this decision list before changing anything:

  1. AVG is still installed and the error appears when Windows starts or AVG opens
Repair AVG, then reinstall it from AVG’s official installer if repair fails.

  2. AVG reports that it quarantined the file
Check AVG Quarantine. Restore the file only after verifying its path, publisher, signature, and security status.

  3. Another old program reports the error
Repair or reinstall that program. The DLL may belong in the program’s private folder rather than in a Windows folder.

  4. AVG was removed long ago but the message appears during startup
Remove the obsolete startup entry or broken integration. Reinstalling old AVG may be unnecessary.

  5. The error began after an update, cleanup utility, or security detection
Check the affected application’s files, antivirus history, and installer logs before attempting manual replacement.

  6. The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows
Suspect a corrupted, incompatible, or wrong-architecture file. Replace the complete owning application rather than registering the DLL.

  7. The error names a different missing file or runtime
Repair that dependency separately. avgscan.dll alone does not prove that Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver is missing.

What is avgscan.dll

avgscan.dll is identified as AVG Scanning Module, a component associated with the historical AVG Anti-Virus System from GRISOFT, s.r.o. It is an application DLL, not part of Windows, Microsoft’s runtime libraries, DirectX, or the normal Windows system-file set.

The name does not establish that every copy is safe or that every copy belongs to AVG. A legitimate file should be assessed by its full path, digital signature, publisher information, file properties, and antivirus scan result.

Current AVG documentation uses newer installation packages and executables. Do not assume that a modern AVG installation should contain this historical filename. If a current installation requests it, the installation may be damaged, an old component may remain, or another program may be invoking a stale dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application also needs a compatible 32-bit dependency, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not substitute a file merely because its name matches.

Fix 1: Repair the AVG installation

Repair is the best first step when AVG remains installed.

From Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 versions.
  4. Search for AVG.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the AVG product.
  6. Choose Advanced options if it is available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Allow Windows to complete the operation.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Launch AVG again and repeat the action that produced the error.

The exact Repair option depends on the AVG edition and Windows version. Some traditional desktop installers expose repair through their own maintenance wizard instead.

If Repair is unavailable

Download the current AVG installer directly from AVG’s official website. The documented free installer is named avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then:

  1. Save the installer locally.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Follow the installation wizard.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted.
  5. Test AVG again.

If the old error came from another application, start that application after the AVG repair and confirm whether the message has disappeared. If the application still fails, proceed to the owning-application repair below.

If normal uninstall or reinstall fails

Use AVG’s official removal utility, avg_av_clear.exe, when the normal installation is broken.

  1. Download the removal tool from AVG’s official support site.
  2. Save your work and close running applications.
  3. Right-click the tool and select Run as administrator.
  4. Accept the prompt to reboot into Safe Mode.
  5. In the tool, choose Remove & Reinstall.
  6. Allow AVG to be removed.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Install AVG again using the official installer.

Use the removal tool for a damaged AVG installation, not simply because a stale startup entry mentions AVG. If AVG has already been removed and no working program depends on it, removing the leftover reference may be the cleaner solution.

Fix 2: Check AVG Quarantine before restoring anything

AVG may have removed or isolated the file. A missing-file message after a security detection does not prove that the detection was incorrect.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

To inspect Quarantine:

  1. Open AVG.
  2. Select Menu.
  3. Choose Quarantine.
  4. Find the entry associated with avgscan.dll.
  5. Review its original location and detection details.
  6. Check whether the file has a valid publisher signature and whether the original path belongs to AVG or another known application.
  7. Scan the item or submit it to AVG for analysis when appropriate.

Only restore the file if you have verified that it is legitimate and belongs to the application you are repairing. In AVG, the restore path is generally More options followed by Restore. Restore and add exception should be used only when the file is known to be safe. Adding an exception weakens protection if the file is actually malicious or has been tampered with.

If the file was deleted rather than quarantined, reinstall the owning application. Do not obtain a replacement from a random DLL website.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error

The program displaying the message is not necessarily AVG. An old installer, utility, game, or third-party integration may be requesting avgscan.dll.

First identify the program:

  1. Note the title-bar text and the full error message.
  2. Check whether the message appears when launching AVG, another application, or Windows startup.
  3. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  4. Select Startup apps.
  5. Look for an AVG entry or an old application associated with the error.
  6. Right-click the entry and choose Open file location when available.
  7. Record the folder containing the executable.

If the executable belongs to a known application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Select the application.
  5. Choose Advanced options, Modify, Repair, or Change, depending on the installer.
  6. Complete the repair.
  7. Restart the application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original vendor or organization-approved installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify integrity, Verify files, or equivalent command before reinstalling the entire game.

Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s own directory before broader system locations. That means the correct copy of a private application DLL usually belongs beside the executable that loads it. Do not copy avgscan.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely to make the message disappear.

If the application is obsolete and no longer needed, uninstall it instead. Removing the program and its stale startup entry is safer than rebuilding an unsupported legacy dependency.

Fix 4: Remove a stale AVG startup entry

A removed AVG installation can leave a startup command, scheduled task, shortcut, or application integration that still requests the old DLL.

Disable a startup application

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Find the AVG or unknown entry associated with the error.
  4. Right-click it.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Disabling a startup item prevents it from launching automatically, but it does not remove the underlying program. If the entry belongs to an application you still use, repair or reinstall that application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Startup folders

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for an obsolete AVG shortcut.
  5. Confirm its target in Properties.
  6. Remove the shortcut only if the AVG installation has already been removed and the entry is clearly stale.

Repeat with:

shell:common startup

For more complicated remnants, use the application’s official uninstaller or AVG’s removal tool. Avoid deleting unidentified registry entries simply because their names contain avgscan.dll.

Fix 5: Check the file’s path, signature, and architecture

If you find a copy of avgscan.dll, inspect it before allowing an application to load it.

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the General tab for its full location and size.
  4. Open Details and check the description, product name, and publisher fields.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Select a signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
  8. Scan the file with your installed security software.

A path under an old AVG installation directory may be consistent with its historical association. A copy in a download folder, temporary folder, user profile, or Windows system directory deserves additional scrutiny.

A valid filename is not enough. Malware can use an expected filename, and a legitimate DLL can be altered after installation. If the signature is missing or invalid, reinstall the owning program from a trusted vendor source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrong architecture can also cause failure. A 32-bit application cannot reliably use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and a matching filename does not guarantee matching exports, dependencies, or application version.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair damaged application files, restore dependencies, or make an incompatible DLL work.

For an ordinary scanning module, registration is normally irrelevant. Running commands such as these can create misleading errors:

regsvr32 avgscan.dll

If Windows reports that the module could not be loaded, that may simply confirm that the file or one of its dependencies is missing. If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, the DLL is not designed for that registration process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the owning application’s repair or reinstall procedure instead.

Fix 7: Install runtimes only when the error identifies one

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because avgscan.dll ends in .dll. DLL is a file format, not a diagnosis.

Install a Microsoft runtime only when:

  • The error names a specific Microsoft runtime DLL.
  • The application’s vendor documentation requires it.
  • Installer logs identify a missing runtime dependency.
  • The application’s repair process requests it.

Microsoft provides current Visual C++ Redistributable packages for x86, x64, and ARM64. Choose the architecture required by the actual application, not by the architecture of Windows alone.

Similarly, use Windows Features only when the application explicitly requires a Windows component:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Enable only the feature required by the application.
  3. Select OK.
  4. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable legacy components as a guess. They will not recreate a missing AVG application DLL.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for Windows corruption

avgscan.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are still useful when other Windows files are also damaged, Windows features fail, or the problem began with broader operating-system corruption.

Open an administrator Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If both commands report that they repaired files, test Windows features and the application. If they report no integrity violations, return to repairing AVG or the application that owns the DLL.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not replace a third-party AVG file. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork by showing what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected AVG or application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is missing.

Fix 9: Check drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is not a normal fix for avgscan.dll. Use Device Manager only if the error occurs alongside a hardware problem, a driver-specific event, or a separate message identifying a driver.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the Driver tab and Events tab.
  7. Use Update driver only when a newer driver is required.
  8. If the issue began immediately after an update, consider Roll Back Driver.
  9. Restart Windows and retest.

Do not replace a graphics, storage, network, or chipset driver to solve an AVG DLL error without evidence connecting the two. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are stale through its free scan, while the full version performs driver installation; for this specific file, repairing the owning AVG or application remains the primary fix.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading avgscan.dll from an unknown DLL site can introduce:

  • Malware using a familiar filename.
  • A file from the wrong AVG release.
  • A 32-bit or 64-bit architecture mismatch.
  • Missing dependent libraries.
  • An unsigned or modified binary.
  • A file that fixes one message but leaves the installation damaged.

It can also create DLL search-order problems if an attacker-controlled directory is searched before the legitimate application directory. Microsoft documents both DLL search behavior and the security risks of unsafe search paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe recovery sources are:

  • AVG’s official installer and removal utility.
  • The affected application’s original vendor installer.
  • A verified organizational software package.
  • AVG Quarantine, but only after legitimacy checks.
  • A known-good backup made from the same application installation.

If you manually recover a file from a verified backup, place it only in the owning application’s directory, match the application architecture and release, and scan it before use. A complete reinstall is usually safer than copying one file.

When “the specified module could not be found” persists

That message can mean either that avgscan.dll is absent or that the DLL exists but one of its dependent libraries is missing.

Work through these checks:

  1. Record the exact executable named in the error.
  2. Record the full path of that executable.
  3. Check whether avgscan.dll exists beside it.
  4. Inspect the DLL signature and properties.
  5. Check AVG’s Quarantine and detection history.
  6. Repair or reinstall the owning application.
  7. Check the application’s installer logs.
  8. Review Event Viewer:
  9. Right-click Start.
  10. Select Event Viewer.
  11. Open Windows Logs.
  12. Check Application around the failure time.
  13. Run a complete malware scan.
  14. Test with a clean reinstall rather than a manually copied DLL.

If the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows, stop trying registration commands. Replace the complete application installation and verify that the replacement matches the program’s architecture.

System Restore can be reasonable if the failure began immediately after a known software change. It should not replace malware investigation or a clean vendor reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention

After the repair succeeds:

  • Keep AVG and the affected application updated through their official installers.
  • Do not use registry cleaners that remove unknown application references.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before deleting detections permanently.
  • Keep backups of installers for business-critical legacy applications.
  • Remove obsolete AVG startup entries after uninstalling old AVG versions.
  • Avoid copying shared DLLs into Windows system folders.
  • Document whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Record the application path and installer version before making changes.
  • If a legacy application is no longer supported, plan its replacement rather than maintaining loose DLL files.

FAQ

Is avgscan.dll a Windows file?

No evidence supports that. It is associated with the historical AVG Anti-Virus System and should not be treated as a Windows component.

Is avgscan.dll safe?

The filename alone is insufficient. Check the path, digital signature, publisher, and antivirus scan result. A copy in an unexpected directory may be malicious or unrelated to AVG.

Does current AVG use avgscan.dll?

Do not assume it does. Current AVG installation documentation refers to modern packages and executables, while this filename is associated with legacy AVG software.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can cause conflicts and does not repair the owning application. Restore the complete application or place a verified private DLL only beside its matching executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Visual C++ fix the error?

Only if a separate diagnostic proves that the affected application requires a missing Visual C++ runtime. avgscan.dll itself is not evidence of that requirement.

Should I run regsvr32 avgscan.dll?

Normally no. Registration is not a general DLL repair method, and a scanning module may not expose the registration entry point that regsvr32 requires.

What if AVG has already been uninstalled?

If only a startup entry or old integration remains, remove that stale reference and uninstall the obsolete application that invokes it. Use AVG’s removal tool if remnants prevent a clean uninstall.

What if the file is quarantined?

Inspect its original path, signature, and detection details. Restore it only after confirming that it is legitimate. If uncertain, reinstall the owning application instead of creating an antivirus exception.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear when I open another program?

That program may have been built with an old AVG integration or may contain a private dependency on the file. Repair or reinstall the program named in the error, not automatically Windows or AVG.
