It is not a Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET assembly.
If Windows says that tmarina.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Timbuktu installation that originally supplied it. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL or copying one into System32.
What tmarina.dll belongs to
tmarina.dll is associated with Timbuktu Pro 2000, originally developed by Netopia, Inc. Its recorded description is “Marina (application kernel) Functions.” Archival file records identify it as a Win32, 32-bit DLL, but those historical file details are not backed by a current official vendor installer.
The file normally belongs in the Timbuktu program directory. There is no known reason for it to exist in:

A 32-bit application must load a compatible 32-bit copy of the DLL. Putting a file in either Windows system directory does not convert it into a 64-bit DLL and may create conflicts with other software.
The error may appear after:
- Timbuktu was incompletely uninstalled or reinstalled
- an old program folder was copied to another computer
- a system image restored only part of the application
- antivirus software quarantined the file
- disk cleanup removed a legacy program file
- the Timbuktu directory was moved or renamed
- Windows was upgraded
- a newer or different Timbuktu release was installed over an older one
The application name shown in the error is the most useful clue. If the message appears while launching an old remote-access tool, shortcut, service, or startup item, identify that program before changing Windows files.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Timbuktu
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus time to locate the installer
This is the most likely and safest fix because tmarina.dll is an application file. A complete reinstall restores the matching DLLs, configuration, services, and any required registration data.

Check for an installed Timbuktu entry
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Timbuktu.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
If you see Advanced options, open it and select Repair if available. Microsoft notes that not every desktop application exposes Repair or Reset.
After the repair completes, restart Windows and launch Timbuktu again.
If the program appears in Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Timbuktu.
- Choose Repair, Change, or a similarly named installer option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the computer.
Do not select Reset casually. Reset can remove application data or configuration. Preserve licensing information, connection profiles, and any required settings before uninstalling.
Reinstall from trusted media
If Repair is unavailable or does not restore the file:
- Save Timbuktu settings and licensing information if the program still opens.
- Obtain the original installer from installation media, a verified organizational software archive, or the administrator who deployed it.
- Disconnect from the network temporarily if the old application is not required to communicate during setup.
- Uninstall Timbuktu from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same product generation that the application expects.
- Start Timbuktu from its new installation rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Test the operation that previously produced the error.
Do not mix files from Timbuktu Pro 2000 with later Timbuktu releases. A similarly named DLL from another release may have different exports, dependencies, or configuration requirements.
A successful repair means the original application starts without the tmarina.dll message and its normal features work. If a new DLL error appears, reinstall the complete application again rather than adding individual files. A second missing file often indicates that the installation is incomplete or incompatible.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may remove an old application file, particularly when the program is obsolete or has network-access features.

- the file came from trusted original media or a verified organizational archive;
- the quarantine event is consistent with a false positive;
- you have confirmed that the application is still needed.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Do not choose Allow on device merely because the filename is familiar.
The safer approach is usually to reinstall Timbuktu from trusted media and submit a suspected false positive to the security vendor. After reinstalling, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If the file is located outside the expected Timbuktu directory, is digitally signed differently from the original software, or is detected by multiple security products, quarantine it and investigate before attempting restoration.
Fix 3: Confirm that the old program is compatible
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing-file message can conceal an architecture or compatibility problem. Historical records identify tmarina.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. It must be loaded by a compatible 32-bit Timbuktu executable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTimbuktu documentation targeted very old Windows releases, and later documentation warned about incomplete support on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that Timbuktu Pro 2000 is officially supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
First check the installed executable:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Timbuktu installation folder.
- Right-click the main Timbuktu executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the product information.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
If the program is known to be a legacy 32-bit application, you can test compatibility settings:
- Right-click the executable.
- Select Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if it matches the software’s documented requirements.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing DLL. It also cannot solve unsupported drivers, services, licensing systems, or network components. If the program installs a background service or network driver, running the main executable in compatibility mode may have no effect.
If the software is business-critical, the more reliable approach is to run the complete legacy installation inside an appropriately supported Windows virtual machine, isolated from unnecessary network access. Obtain approval from the organization’s security and licensing administrators before doing this.

Fix 4: Check the installation directory, not Windows system folders
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If Timbuktu is still installed, the file may exist but be in the wrong location.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate Timbuktu.
- If available, open its advanced options or installation details.
- Otherwise, right-click the Timbuktu shortcut and select Open file location.
- Check whether
tmarina.dllis in the same application directory as the Timbuktu executable.
If the file exists in the correct directory but will not load, do not copy it elsewhere. The problem may be:

- a damaged DLL;
- a mismatched Timbuktu build;
- another missing DLL;
- a missing service or configuration entry;
- an incorrect application path;
- an architecture mismatch.
Reinstall the full application from matching media. A dependency-analysis utility can sometimes identify the next missing component, but use it only on a controlled copy and do not download every dependency it reports.
Fix 5: Check for broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
tmarina.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so Windows repair commands normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are useful only when other Windows components are also damaged or Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
Before running them, save open work and connect the computer to reliable power.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test Timbuktu.
SFC may report that it found and repaired protected Windows files. That does not mean it repaired tmarina.dll. If the Timbuktu error remains, return to the application repair or reinstall path.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it identifies, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling Timbuktu remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.

Fix 6: Check Windows updates and device compatibility
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Windows updates do not provide tmarina.dll, but an operating system upgrade can expose compatibility problems in old remote-access software.
Check Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test Timbuktu again.
Do not use Device Manager to search for tmarina.dll. Device Manager manages hardware drivers, while this file belongs to an application. It is relevant only if the Timbuktu installation depends on a legacy network adapter or other device that is also malfunctioning.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and any category related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message before changing the driver.
Do not replace a working modern driver merely because Timbuktu reports a DLL error. If a confirmed driver problem is part of the wider failure, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the Timbuktu DLL or repair the legacy application itself.
Fix 7: Do not install unrelated runtimes
Time needed: 5 minutes
There is no evidence that tmarina.dll is supplied by:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable;
- DirectX;
- .NET;
- Windows Features;
- a graphics driver.
Do not install these packages simply because a generic DLL website recommends them.
You can inspect optional Windows components, but enabling them is not a repair for this file:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Select Cancel unless you have a separate, documented reason to change one.
If the Timbuktu installer specifically requires an old Windows feature, use the installer’s documentation and obtain approval before enabling it. Do not enable legacy components as a trial-and-error response to tmarina.dll.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
There is no evidence that tmarina.dll is an ActiveX control, COM server, or self-registering DLL. Running this command is therefore inappropriate:
regsvr32 tmarina.dll
If the file is missing, registration cannot restore it. If it exists but depends on other files, registration will not repair those dependencies. If it is the wrong architecture, registration will not convert it.
A message such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” would be expected for a DLL that was never designed for this use.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid standalone DLL download repositories and unofficial file mirrors. An isolated replacement may be:

A file that merely has the name tmarina.dll is not proven authentic. No current official public download for the original Timbuktu Pro 2000 DLL is established here.
Use, in order of preference:

- a verified company software archive;
- a known-good system image containing the complete installation;
- the organization or administrator that originally deployed the software.

- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for remaining Timbuktu entries.
- Review Services for leftover Timbuktu services.

FAQ
Is tmarina.dll part of Windows?
No known evidence supports that. It is associated with Timbuktu Pro 2000, not Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Is tmarina.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. A legitimate archival association does not prove that every copy is safe. Consider its location, provenance, security detections, and whether it came from the original Timbuktu installation.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The file belongs with the Timbuktu application, and copying it into a Windows system directory does not resolve version, dependency, or architecture problems.
Is this a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Archival records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. The old Timbuktu executable must be compatible with that architecture.
Will SFC restore tmarina.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore third-party Timbuktu files.
Recommended Free Tools
Will installing Visual C++ or .NET fix the error?
There is no evidence connecting this file to those packages. Repair the Timbuktu installation first.
Why does the error remain after I copied the DLL?
The file may be the wrong build, another dependency may be missing, or the application may require configuration, services, or registry data. Reinstall the complete matching program.
Should I use compatibility mode?
It can help some old user-mode applications, but it cannot replace a missing DLL or guarantee that legacy services, drivers, licensing, and network features will work on current Windows.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Repair or reinstall the specific Timbuktu product from original or verified organizational media. If it is obsolete and no longer required, uninstall it instead of rebuilding the installation.
