Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, answer these questions:
- Which executable shows the error: AVG, a startup item, or another application?
- Did it begin after an AVG update, uninstall, quarantine event, disk cleanup, System Restore, or malware removal?
- Is AVG still listed under Settings > Apps > Installed apps?
- Does the file exist anywhere on the computer, and what is its full path?
- Is the affected AVG program 32-bit or 64-bit?
avgtmgr.dll is a legacy AVG component called AVG Test Manager User Interface. It belongs to AVG Anti-Virus System, originally developed by GRISOFT, s.r.o., and is not a Windows system DLL.
The safest solution is to identify the AVG installation that owns the file, then repair or reinstall that installation. If AVG has already been removed, clean up the stale reference instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What avgtmgr.dll is
Public file metadata identifies avgtmgr.dll with these historical details:
- Description: AVG Test Manager User Interface
- Internal name:
AvgTMgr - Product: AVG Anti-Virus System
- Historical developer name: GRISOFT, s.r.o.
- Architecture: 32-bit Win32 DLL
- Historical versions reported publicly:
7.0.0.141and7.5.0.494
The conflicting version records matter. There is no single archived avgtmgr.dll that should be assumed to work with every AVG installation.

The file appears associated with old AVG 7.x-era software. That does not establish that current AVG products still ship this exact component, nor does a matching filename prove that a copy found on disk is safe.
Is avgtmgr.dll part of Windows
No. avgtmgr.dll is a third-party AVG application file.
It should not normally be restored with Windows component repair, copied into C:WindowsSystem32, or copied into C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those directories contain Windows-managed components, and their names do not make them universal destinations for third-party DLLs.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 generally contains 64-bit Windows binaries while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows binaries. That naming convention does not tell you where an old AVG application DLL belongs.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because avgtmgr.dll was not found.”
- “The file avgtmgr.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading avgtmgr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because avgtmgr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “A required component is missing: avgtmgr.dll.”
- “Cannot register Avgtmgr.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. Windows may be reporting that:
- The DLL was deleted.
- AVG was only partially uninstalled.
- AVG quarantined the file.
- The DLL is damaged.
- A dependency of the DLL is missing.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component is being loaded.
- A stale startup entry still points to an old AVG installation.
If the error appears while starting a game or unrelated program, the filename alone does not prove that program owns the DLL. First identify the executable named in the error and check whether AVG was installed on that computer.
Fix 1: Repair AVG from Installed apps
This is the best first fix when AVG is still installed or AVG itself is failing to open, update, scan, or start.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Select the three-dot button beside AVG.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the uninstall request again.
- When the AVG Setup window opens, choose Repair.
- Allow the repair to complete.
- Restart Windows if AVG requests it.
After restarting, open AVG from the Start menu. Check whether its main window opens and whether the original application now starts without the DLL message.
Repair is preferable to copying a loose DLL because it can restore the application files and configuration as a matching set. A standalone file may satisfy a filename check but still fail because its exports, dependencies, or build do not match the rest of AVG.
If the Repair option is unavailable, the uninstall process fails, or the error returns immediately, continue with a clean removal and reinstall.

Fix 2: Reinstall AVG from its official installer
Use this path when AVG is listed but repair does not work, or when AVG files appear incomplete.
Recommended Free Tools
- Uninstall AVG from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download AVG only from AVG’s official website or its official installation files page.
- For AVG AntiVirus Free, the installer is identified as
avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe. - Run the installer.
- Approve the Windows permission prompt.
- Follow the setup screens.
- Restart Windows after installation if requested.
- Test AVG and then reproduce the original error.
Do not use a random DLL archive as a substitute for the official installer. A current AVG installer may not restore this exact legacy component, so if the message is produced by an old application, identify that old application before assuming that a current AVG installation is the correct owner.
If the error comes from a stale shortcut, scheduled task, service, or startup item rather than AVG itself, reinstalling current AVG may not remove the reference. Use the removal steps below instead.
Fix 3: Remove a leftover AVG reference
If AVG was already removed, avgtmgr.dll may be referenced by an obsolete startup entry or another remnant. In that situation, replacing the DLL only hides the broken reference and leaves the unwanted startup item in place.
Check Installed apps
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for
AVG. - Uninstall any remaining AVG components.
- Restart Windows.
If normal uninstall fails, use AVG’s official AVG Uninstall Tool. AVG’s removal procedure uses Safe Mode to remove remaining AVG components.
Check Startup
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an AVG entry or an entry pointing to an old AVG directory.
- Select the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry is a diagnostic step. If the error stops, identify the related AVG component and remove it properly rather than leaving a broken entry disabled indefinitely.
Check the triggering program
If the message names an executable, locate that program under Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Repair or uninstall that program if it is clearly the owner. If it is an old application no longer needed, removing the application is safer than placing a legacy AVG DLL beside it.
Do not delete random registry entries or scheduled tasks based only on a search result. If you cannot identify the owner, record the executable path and the full error message first.
Fix 4: Check AVG Quarantine before restoring anything
Check Quarantine when the error started immediately after AVG detected, cleaned, or updated something.
- Open AVG.
- Select Menu.
- Select Quarantine.
- Locate the entry associated with
avgtmgr.dll. - Open its details and note the original path.
- Check whether that path belongs to an actual AVG installation.
- If the file is clearly legitimate, use More options > Restore.
- Use Restore and add exception only after verifying the file and its location.
Restoring a quarantined file carries security risk. Do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar.
If the file was located in a temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile directory, or a randomly named folder, treat it as suspicious. Do not create an exception automatically. Submit the file to AVG Threat Labs for analysis and investigate the computer for malware.

If AVG repeatedly quarantines the file, stop restoring it. Repeated detection may indicate that the file is modified, damaged, unsigned, or not the original AVG component. Repair or remove the AVG installation and complete a malware investigation instead.
Fix 5: Verify the file’s path and publisher
If avgtmgr.dll exists, verify it before allowing an application to load it.

- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description and product information.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Record the complete path.
A plausible file should be inside the installation directory of the AVG product that references it. A copy in a system directory, temporary directory, download folder, or unrelated application directory needs further investigation.
The historical publisher information is not enough to prove that a specific copy is genuine. Exact signing status, hash, and original installation path must be checked on the individual computer.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption only when appropriate
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not normal methods for restoring a third-party AVG DLL.
Use them when other Windows components are also malfunctioning, Windows features fail, updates are damaged, or the problem began after broader system corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test AVG or the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without resolving the AVG error, return to AVG repair or removal rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.
When manually hunting through repair logs and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional. Reinstalling the AVG-owned program remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem appeared immediately after an AVG update, uninstall, disk cleanup, malware-removal operation, or another identifiable system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs when available.
- Review the changes.
- Complete the restore.
- Restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files.
After the restart, test the application that produced the message. If the error returns, do not repeatedly restore random points. Repair or remove the AVG installation and investigate the event that originally damaged it.
Fix 8: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it for self-registering OLE controls and ActiveX DLLs.

A normal application DLL may not contain the required DllRegisterServer entry point. Running a command such as this is therefore not an appropriate default repair:
regsvr32 avgtmgr.dll
It can produce another error without fixing the missing dependency or damaged AVG installation. Use registration only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering component.

Fix 9: Do not install unrelated runtimes or drivers without evidence
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, graphics drivers, and Windows Features do not normally restore a missing AVG application DLL.
Install or repair one of those components only if the full error also identifies a missing runtime DLL, a graphics component, or a Windows feature. Enabling Windows Features at random can add unnecessary components without addressing the AVG problem.
If Device Manager shows a separate warning, repair that device independently:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer when necessary.
When identifying drivers manually means checking many hardware vendors and guessing which package is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional. A driver update will not replace the AVG DLL, so repair or reinstall AVG when AVG is the actual owner.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download avgtmgr.dll from a random DLL download website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the application folder, or an AVG folder.
That approach can fail because:
- The copy may be malware or modified.
- The file may be unsigned.
- The version may belong to a different AVG release.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- Required dependencies may still be missing.
- The file may not match the rest of the AVG installation.
- Copying it may conceal a stale startup reference instead of removing the cause.
The safe sources are the AVG installation already associated with the computer, AVG’s official installer and uninstall tools, and a verified backup or restore point from that same installation. Do not assume that a current AVG installer includes this exact legacy file.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Historical metadata identifies avgtmgr.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit AVG program cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement.
The error can also appear when the DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing or the application is loading an incompatible build. That is why matching the filename is not enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not infer the correct location from Windows’ System32 and SysWOW64 folder names. Repair the owning application so its installer places the matching files in the correct application directory.

FAQ
Is avgtmgr.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a legacy third-party AVG component and is not supplied as a normal Microsoft Windows system DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is avgtmgr.dll safe?
A genuine copy from the correct AVG installation may be legitimate, but the filename alone proves nothing. Verify its path, file details, provenance, and quarantine history.
Which AVG versions used avgtmgr.dll?
Public metadata associates it with old AVG 7.x-era software. Historical records report different builds, including 7.0.0.141 and 7.5.0.494, so no single replacement should be treated as universal.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. It is a third-party application DLL, and there is no general reason to place it in either System32 or SysWOW64.
What if AVG was already uninstalled?
Remove remaining AVG components with AVG’s official uninstall tool, restart, and inspect the startup item or application producing the message. Do not install the DLL just to silence an obsolete reference.
Can SFC restore avgtmgr.dll?
No. SFC targets protected Windows files. Use it for broader Windows corruption, not as the normal repair for a missing AVG DLL.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged module. Repairing the owning AVG installation is safer than copying another version of the file.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the error began directly after a known AVG update, uninstall, cleanup, malware-removal action, or other system change, and a suitable restore point exists.
What is the correct fix in most cases?
Repair the installed AVG product. If repair fails, uninstall it with AVG’s official tool and reinstall the appropriate product, or remove the obsolete AVG reference if the old installation is no longer needed.
