What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The program can’t start because avk.dll is missing from your computer.” The avk.dll error usually points to a damaged or incomplete G DATA installation, not a missing Windows component.
You may also see:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because avk.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting avk.dll.”
- “Error loading avk.dll.”
- “Cannot register avk.dll.”
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appears when G DATA starts: update, repair, or reinstall the affected G DATA product.
- G DATA recently updated, failed to uninstall, or was removed: perform a clean uninstall and reinstall.
- Your antivirus reported or quarantined
avk.dll: inspect quarantine before restoring anything. - Another application shows the error after G DATA was removed: remove the stale startup or application reference, then reinstall or remove G DATA cleanly.
- Several unrelated applications also fail: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The file exists but still will not load: suspect a mismatched architecture, damaged dependency, or mixed-version installation.
- The issue began after a driver or hardware change: check Device Manager, but treat this as a lower-probability cause.
Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL.
What avk.dll belongs to
Public file records associate avk.dll with the G DATA ANTIVIRUS UI and G DATA Software AG. It is used by G DATA Antivirus, Internet Security, Total Security, and related product editions.

It is not a normal Windows system file. A legitimate copy would normally be inside a G DATA program directory, often under a path resembling:
C:Program FilesG DATAInternetSecurityAVK
The exact folder varies by product edition, installation type, and system architecture. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory should not automatically be trusted.

Fix 1: Update or reinstall G DATA first
This is the most likely fix when the error appears while G DATA is starting.
Try a G DATA program update
- Open G DATA from the Start menu.
- Open Settings or SecurityCenter settings.
- Find the Updates section.
- Choose the option to check for a program update.
- Allow the update to finish.
- Restart Windows.
If G DATA opens normally afterward, launch the affected G DATA component again and confirm that the error is gone.
If the update fails, repeatedly rolls back, or G DATA cannot open its interface, reinstall the complete product instead of replacing avk.dll manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDownload the complete installer
Use the official G DATA software-download page or your My G DATA account. Select the product edition already licensed for the computer, such as Antivirus, Internet Security, or Total Security.
Then:
- Close other applications.
- Run the G DATA installer.
- Approve the Windows permission prompt.
- Choose the standard installation or repair option if offered.
- Sign in with your G DATA credentials or enter your registration number.
- Let setup replace all program files and dependencies.
- Restart Windows.
- Update the product after the first launch.
A complete installation restores the matching files around avk.dll, which is safer than copying one file from another computer. If the error remains after this repair, continue with the clean removal procedure.
Fix 2: Check whether G DATA quarantined the file
A security product may quarantine or remove a file after a detection. That does not prove the detection was wrong, and the filename alone does not prove that a remaining copy is safe.

- PERSONAL DATA SCANS – Take your info off the market. We’ll find your personal information on sites selling it, then guide you on how to remove it.
- SOCIAL PRIVACY MANAGER – Decide what you share. McAfee finds the privacy settings buried in your social accounts and fixes them.
Inspect quarantine
- Open G DATA.
- Open Virus protection, Security, or the product’s detection area.
- Open Quarantine.
- Search for
avk.dllor the detection associated with the startup failure. - Record the detection name and location.
- Update G DATA’s virus signatures and program.
- Run a full scan.
Restore the file only if the detection has been confirmed as a false positive. G DATA warns that restoring a detected file can reintroduce malware. If you are unsure, leave it quarantined and reinstall G DATA from its official installer.

Fix 3: Cleanly remove and reinstall G DATA
Use this when a normal update does not repair the installation, or when an uninstall was interrupted.
Standard uninstall
- Press Win+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the installed G DATA product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- When asked about personal settings or quarantine files, keep only what you genuinely need.
- Finish the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and install the current product from G DATA.
If the product does not appear in Programs and Features, or the uninstall fails, use G DATA’s official Product Cleaner. Follow its instructions carefully because cleaning can remove stored settings and quarantine data.
After using Product Cleaner:
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct G DATA edition.
- Activate it with your existing account or registration number.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Run a product update and a security scan.
Check the architecture
Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit installation, or the reverse. Public file catalogues contain different builds from different G DATA product generations, so a version or file size found online is not a universal target.

Fix 4: Check for a stale reference after removal
If G DATA was intentionally uninstalled but Windows still displays the error, another startup item, shortcut, scheduled task, or service may still be trying to load it.
First restart Windows and check whether the message returns. If it does:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old G DATA entry only if you are certain it belongs to the removed installation.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and remove any remaining G DATA component.
- Restart Windows.
Do not use registry-cleaner software or delete random registry entries. If the stale reference remains, reinstall G DATA and remove it through the official uninstaller, or contact G DATA support with the exact popup and product history.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other programs fail too
avk.dll is a third-party G DATA file, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated applications show missing-file errors, Windows features are malfunctioning, or system corruption is suspected.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try G DATA again.
Microsoft documents these commands for protected Windows components. They do not guarantee restoration of a missing third-party G DATA DLL. You can review Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM guidance if either command reports an error.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair actions are performed by the full version; reinstalling G DATA remains the definitive fix when avk.dll belongs to that product.
If DISM or SFC reports unrepaired corruption, install pending Windows updates and restart. If Windows itself remains unstable, investigate disk health or use Microsoft recovery options.

Fix 6: Check drivers only for broader system symptoms
A driver update is not a verified primary fix for a G DATA-specific avk.dll error. Consider it only if the problem began with crashes, device failures, blue screens, or several applications failing after hardware changes.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing recently changed hardware.
- Right-click a device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove security, storage, chipset, or network drivers at random. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the G DATA product that owns avk.dll.
What not to do
Do not download avk.dll from a DLL website
An isolated download can contain the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or malicious code. It also leaves the rest of the G DATA installation damaged.
Do not copy it into Windows system folders
Placing the file in System32 or SysWOW64 does not repair G DATA and can create a misleading system-wide reference.
Do not run regsvr32 avk.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this G DATA application DLL is a self-registering ActiveX or COM component. Running the command commonly creates another error rather than restoring the installation.
Do not install unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, generic driver updates, and Windows Update are not established primary fixes for this G DATA-specific file. Repair the program that installed the file first.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep G DATA’s program and virus signatures updated.
- Restart Windows when a G DATA update requests it.
- Keep the official installer or My G DATA access available.
- Review quarantine before restoring any detected file.
- Do not mix files from different G DATA editions or computers.
- Keep Windows updated and maintain current backups.
- If you remove G DATA, remove its remaining components through the official uninstall process.
FAQ
Is avk.dll a Windows file?
No. Public records associate it with G DATA security software. It should not normally be treated as a Microsoft system DLL.

- The program detects not only Mac viruses but also malware for Windows to avoid accidentally forwarding infected files
Which program installs avk.dll?
It is associated with G DATA Antivirus, Internet Security, Total Security, and related G DATA products. The exact product edition depends on what was installed on the computer.
Should I restore avk.dll from quarantine?
Only after confirming that the detection is a false positive. Update G DATA, scan the system, and preserve the detection details if you are uncertain.
Why does the file exist but still fail to load?
The file may be corrupt, mismatched with the installed G DATA release, built for the wrong architecture, or missing a related program file. A complete G DATA reinstall is safer than replacing only avk.dll.
What if G DATA has already been removed?
Remove stale G DATA startup entries or remaining components through the official uninstall process. If the error continues, reinstalling G DATA and then removing it cleanly can rebuild the missing registration and services.
When should I contact G DATA support?
Contact support when Product Cleaner or reinstall fails, quarantine repeatedly removes the file, activation fails, or the error returns immediately after a clean installation. Include the exact error, G DATA edition, Windows version, installation log, detection name, and whether avk.dll exists in the product folder.
