avntdll.dll is a legacy application DLL associated with the old AntiVir antivirus software from H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH. If Windows reports that avntdll.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or unable to load, repair or remove the old AntiVir installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is not identified as a Windows component. It should normally remain in the folder belonging to the application that loads it, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
avntdll.dll identification
| Property | Reported information |
|---|---|
| File | avntdll.dll |
| Internal name | AVNTDLL DLL |
| Product | AVNTDLL Dynamic Link Library |
| Historical publisher | H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH |
| Associated software | Legacy AntiVir/XP antivirus software |
| Reported architecture | 32-bit x86 |
| Reported version | 6.16.0.0 |
| Reported size | 44 KB, or 45,056 bytes |
| Reported copyright | 1996–2002 |
The version, size, architecture, and copyright details come from historical third-party file metadata rather than a current vendor manifest. Treat them as identification clues, not as a reason to obtain the file from a file-download site.
Historical AntiVir installations used directories such as avpersonal and included files with names such as AVGNT.EXE, AVGUARD.EXE, and AVWUPSRV.EXE. The exact application that is requesting the DLL is more important than the filename alone.

Which errors does avntdll.dll cause?
You may see messages including:
- “This application failed to start because avntdll.dll was not found.”
- “The file avntdll.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: avntdll.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading avntdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because avntdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that avntdll.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
First, identify the program that calls the DLL
Do this before copying files, reinstalling runtimes, or changing Windows folders.
Read the executable name
Look at the complete error dialog. It may name the program that failed, such as an old AntiVir executable or a leftover startup component.
If the message appears immediately after signing in, the caller may be a stale startup entry, service, or scheduled task left behind after AntiVir was removed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check installed applications
- Press
Windowskey +R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for AntiVir, AntiVir Personal Edition, AntiVir XP, H+BEDV, or another old antivirus entry.
- Note whether the entry is still installed before choosing repair or removal.
On Windows 11, you can also open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and search for AntiVir or Avira.
Do not assume that a current Avira installation contains the old AntiVir module. Current Avira software is a separate product path and is not verified restoration media for this legacy DLL.
Locate the DLL
If a copy of the file exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the drive containing Windows for
avntdll.dll. - Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs if present.
A copy beside the old AntiVir executable is consistent with the historical software association. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-download folder, a random game directory, or an unrelated system folder needs additional scrutiny.
Windows normally searches the application directory during DLL loading. That is why the correct repair is usually to restore the owning application’s files through its installer, not to place a DLL in a global Windows directory. Microsoft documents the DLL search behavior in its dynamic-link library search order documentation.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the old AntiVir application
This is the most likely fix when the caller is an old AntiVir program and the software is still needed.
If you have the original installer
Use the original installer or installation media for the same AntiVir product and architecture.
- Disconnect from anything that requires the broken application, if practical.
- Locate the original installer from a trusted backup or official vendor source.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if that option is available.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the damaged installation first.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer again.
- Restart once more if the installer requests it.
- Launch the original application and confirm that the error no longer appears.
Use a matching installer rather than extracting only avntdll.dll. The DLL may depend on other AntiVir files, services, configuration data, or a particular version of the application.

- Select the AntiVir or H+BEDV entry.
- Select Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the startup error has disappeared.
For a current Avira product, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Avira Security, choose the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall. The exact product name may differ.
If Windows still displays the error after removal, continue to the startup and service cleanup steps below. Do not delete random DLLs from Windows folders to hide the message.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair or removal worked when:
- The original AntiVir application opens without the DLL message.
- Windows no longer displays the error during startup.
- Task Manager no longer shows a failed AntiVir process.
- The old application’s service or scheduled task no longer attempts to launch a missing executable.
If the error names a different executable after reinstalling, record that name. It may identify a separate stale component.

Windows Security may have quarantined a file that belonged to the old application. Do not restore it automatically because the filename looks familiar.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review entries matching the time the error began.
- Expand a relevant entry and inspect the detected path.
- Compare that path with the AntiVir installation directory.
- Check the publisher, detection name, and available file details.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the expected AntiVir installation directory.
- The associated application is genuinely installed and needed.
- The installer and publisher are trusted.
- The file can be authenticated against your original installation media or a known-good backup.
- You understand why the detection occurred.
Microsoft notes that restoring a threat can cause Windows Defender to detect it again. Do not disable protection merely to force avntdll.dll back into a folder. If the file is not clearly trusted, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete application from legitimate media.
For a suspicious copy outside the old AntiVir directory, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the location or behavior remains suspicious, use an offline scan rather than adding an exclusion.
Fix 3: Remove a stale startup entry, service, or task
This applies when AntiVir was uninstalled but Windows still tries to start one of its components.
Check startup applications
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for AntiVir, H+BEDV,
AVGNT, or an entry with a missing file path. - Right-click the entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry stops it from launching but does not remove the underlying software.

Check services
- Press
Windowskey +R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for services clearly associated with AntiVir or H+BEDV.
- Open a suspected service and inspect its Path to executable.
- If the path points to a removed installation, note the service name.
- Use the application’s official uninstaller first, if available.
Do not stop or delete an unfamiliar service merely because its name looks unusual. A stale service should be removed only after you have confirmed its executable path and software association.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press
Windowskey +R. - Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks whose Actions point to a deleted AntiVir folder.
- Disable a confirmed stale task.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
If the old product cannot be removed cleanly, reinstalling it from original media and then uninstalling it is often safer than manually deleting its service and registry entries.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file integrity
Available historical metadata describes avntdll.dll as a 32-bit x86 file. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit application, but it still needs the matching 32-bit application files.
Do not copy a DLL from another program simply because both programs are 32-bit. A file with the same name can be a different build, and an arbitrary replacement can introduce dependency errors or DLL search-order risks.
If the message says:
- “not designed to run on Windows,”
- “bad image,”
- “entry point not found,” or
- “the application was unable to start correctly,”
suspect corruption, a mismatched version, or the wrong architecture. Obtain the file through the matching AntiVir installer instead of registering or relocating it.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and compare its location and metadata with the original application. An unexpected copy should be scanned before it is opened or trusted.
Fix 5: Update Windows and repair Windows components
Windows Update will not normally recreate avntdll.dll because this is a third-party application file. Updating Windows is still appropriate when the operating system itself is unstable or the error began after broader system corruption.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If Windows reports other missing or damaged system components, run the Microsoft repair tools in the recommended order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to restore a third-party AntiVir DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows reported system problems before its full version performs repairs, but it is not required and reinstalling the specific AntiVir application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent software change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after installing, removing, or updating software.

- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review which applications and drivers will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish to confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not guarantee that an old AntiVir installer will be recovered. If the error remains, use the restore results to identify the software change that triggered it, then repair or uninstall that application.
Fix 7: Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes automatically
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not established providers of avntdll.dll. Reinstall one of these only when the error names that runtime or the owning application documents it as a dependency.
The Microsoft Visual C++ packages are distributed as architecture-specific installers, including vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe. Installing both packages is not a direct solution for this filename.
Likewise, reinstalling a graphics driver or enabling a Windows feature will not normally restore an AntiVir DLL. Use those steps only when the calling application identifies a driver, runtime, or Windows feature problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Driver update and reinstall checks
A driver is not a known source of avntdll.dll, but a broader startup failure can sometimes expose multiple unrelated errors.
If Device Manager shows a separate driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Uninstall Device only when the hardware problem is confirmed.
- Restart Windows if you uninstall a device.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Manually matching drivers across many devices can involve hunting versions and guessing which entry is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the old AntiVir program when that program owns avntdll.dll.

What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Third-party DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file with altered metadata. Even a clean copy may not fix the missing dependencies, services, and configuration that the original application requires.
Use original installation media, a trusted backup, or the software vendor’s official support and download channel. Do not use a random DLL as a replacement source.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Application DLLs are normally private to their owning application. Copying avntdll.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or both can create version conflicts and increase the risk that another program loads an unintended file.
The application directory is normally the correct location for a private DLL.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that avntdll.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:

regsvr32 avntdll.dll
If the DLL does not export the required registration entry point, regsvr32 will fail and the underlying missing-file or version problem will remain. Microsoft explains this limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
Do not whitelist an unexpected copy
A familiar filename does not prove that a file is safe. A copy planted in an unusual directory can be part of a DLL hijacking attempt or an unrelated malicious program. Microsoft discusses these risks in its DLL security guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrequently asked questions
Is avntdll.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with legacy AntiVir software from H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH.
Which program is requesting avntdll.dll?
The executable named in the error dialog is the best clue. If no executable is shown, inspect installed applications, startup entries, services, scheduled tasks, and the DLL’s folder.
Is avntdll.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Available historical metadata reports an x86, 32-bit file. No verified 64-bit build was identified.
Was Windows Security responsible for removing it?
Possibly, but do not assume so. Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and verify the path and application before restoring anything.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Install a runtime only if the error specifically identifies it or the owning application documents that dependency.
Should I use the current Avira installer?
Do not assume it will restore this exact legacy module. Current Avira products are not verified replacements for the old AntiVir component. Use original AntiVir media when repair is required, or uninstall the obsolete software.
What if the error started after AntiVir was uninstalled?
Check for a stale startup entry, service, or scheduled task. If the old application is still partially present, reinstalling it from legitimate media and then uninstalling it cleanly may remove the remaining references.
What if the error says “specified module could not be found”?
The missing item may be a dependency rather than avntdll.dll itself. Repair the complete owning application instead of copying an isolated DLL.
What information should I keep if nothing works?
Record the exact error text, calling executable, executable path, DLL path, file properties, timestamp, Windows Security quarantine record, and the software change that preceded the problem. That evidence is more useful to application-specific support than repeated DLL downloads.
