If Windows reports “pmxprop.dll was not found,” “The application failed to start because pmxprop.dll was not found,” or “pmxprop.dll could not be loaded,” the missing file is usually part of an old PowerVR KYRO graphics-driver installation. pmxprop.dll is not a normal Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.
The safest repair is to identify whether the computer still uses a KYRO, KYRO II, or KYRO II SE graphics card, then reinstall the complete matching KYRO driver package. Do not begin by copying a standalone DLL into System32 or downloading it from a random DLL website.
What pmxprop.dll is
pmxprop.dll is associated with the PowerVR KYRO graphics-driver family from Imagination Technologies Ltd. Its reported description is KYRO property page shell extension.
A property-page shell extension adds manufacturer-specific pages to Windows property dialogs, such as graphics-card properties shown through Windows or Explorer. The file normally arrived as one part of a larger driver package alongside other KYRO components. It was not intended to function as an isolated Windows runtime.

This distinction matters:
- It is a third-party graphics-driver file.
- It is not supplied by Microsoft as part of Windows.
- It is not repaired by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET unless another part of the error specifically identifies one of those runtimes.
- A missing file may indicate an incomplete driver installation, a stale reference left behind after hardware removal, or an antivirus quarantine event.
- The known component is a legacy 32-bit DLL, so modern 64-bit Windows may expose compatibility problems even when the file itself is genuine.
Historical KYRO driver packages were made for older Windows releases, including Windows 9x/Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. A driver that worked on one of those systems should not automatically be considered compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What causes the error
The likely cause depends on what changed immediately before the message appeared.
| Situation | Likely cause | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| A KYRO card is still installed | Incomplete or damaged driver package | Reinstall the complete matching driver |
| The error began after security software acted | Quarantined or deleted driver file | Verify the quarantine item before restoring it |
| The computer no longer has KYRO hardware | Orphaned startup or shell-extension reference | Remove the obsolete software and reference |
| The error appeared after a Windows or driver change | Legacy driver incompatibility | Use the original supported environment or remove the old component |
| Other Windows files are also failing | Broader component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A downloaded replacement fails immediately | Wrong build, dependency, architecture, or malware | Remove it and restore the complete package |
The error does not identify a particular modern application that requires pmxprop.dll. It only shows that Windows or an installed program attempted to load a component with that name.
Fix 1: Confirm whether KYRO hardware is still installed
Start with hardware identification. Restoring an obsolete driver is unnecessary if the card was removed years ago.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Look for an entry containing PowerVR, KYRO, KYRO II, or KYRO II SE.
- Also expand Other devices and look for an unknown display or multimedia device.
- Double-click any relevant entry and open the General tab.
- Read the Device status box.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, version, and driver file details.
If a KYRO card is present, continue with the driver repair below. If the system uses a modern AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA adapter instead, the pmxprop.dll message is more likely caused by an obsolete KYRO installation that was not fully removed.
Do not use the presence of a file in C:WindowsSystem32 as proof that the hardware is installed. A leftover file can remain after a card or driver has been removed.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete KYRO driver package
This is the most likely fix when the computer still contains KYRO hardware.
Remove the damaged installation
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for entries containing PowerVR, KYRO, or the card manufacturer’s name.
- Select the relevant entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
If no KYRO entry appears:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the KYRO device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only if you are deliberately removing the old package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
After removal, Windows may use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. That is expected temporarily. The display may use a lower resolution until a compatible driver is installed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install the matching package
Use the original graphics-card manufacturer’s driver media or a trustworthy archive of the complete historical KYRO package. Match the package to:
- The exact KYRO card model.
- The Windows release for which the package was designed.
- The system architecture and installer requirements.
- Any manufacturer-specific version of the card.
Do not extract only pmxprop.dll. A complete installation may also contain display-driver files, supporting libraries, configuration data, and registration information that the shell extension expects.
To run an installer:
- Copy the complete installer to a local folder.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the Digital Signatures tab, review any available signer.
- Select General and choose Unblock if that option is present and the file came from a source you trust.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click the installer again.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again and confirm whether the KYRO adapter is identified without a warning icon.
Test the original program or reproduce the action that generated the error. If the message is gone and Device Manager shows the expected adapter, the repair worked.

If the installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not force individual DLL files into system folders. The original driver may depend on older display-driver infrastructure that current Windows no longer supports. In that case, use the card only in a supported legacy Windows environment or virtual machine, or remove the obsolete software if the card is no longer needed.
Manually hunting through old packages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming, especially when several devices are listed in Device Manager. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. For this specific file, however, reinstalling the complete KYRO package remains the definitive repair when the hardware is still present.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software or cleanup utilities may remove a legitimate old driver because legacy components can look unusual. A quarantined copy is not automatically safe, though. Malware can use a legitimate filename.
Check the quarantine history as follows:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
pmxprop.dll, the KYRO driver, or its installation folder. - Open the event and review the detected path, detection name, and action.
- Do not choose Allow on device merely because the filename matches.
- Compare the path with the expected KYRO installation and verify the file’s publisher or digital signature where available.
- If the file was installed by the complete driver package and the security product reports no malware, restore it only through the security product’s controls.
- Update the security definitions.
- Run a full scan.
If the file was located in a temporary download folder, an unusual user profile folder, or a directory unrelated to the KYRO installation, leave it quarantined and remove it. A matching filename does not establish authenticity.
After a verified restoration, restart Windows and test the affected program. If the error returns, reinstall the complete driver instead of repeatedly restoring the same isolated file.
Fix 4: Remove an orphaned KYRO reference if the card is gone
If the computer no longer has KYRO hardware, restoring pmxprop.dll may recreate an obsolete driver problem rather than solve one. A startup or shell-extension reference can continue trying to load the file after the graphics card and software have been removed.
First uninstall the old program:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for PowerVR, KYRO, and the original card manufacturer.
- Uninstall matching entries.
- Restart Windows.
Then check Device Manager:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Select View and enable Show hidden devices.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click greyed-out KYRO entries and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart.
Check startup programs:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly identified as an obsolete KYRO or PowerVR component.
- Restart and check whether the message returns.
Do not delete random registry values or unknown startup entries based only on a filename. If the message continues, use the exact path shown in the error or in Event Viewer to identify which remaining program is requesting the DLL. If the request comes from an obsolete shell extension, removing that software or registration is safer than downloading a replacement.
Fix 5: Test whether Windows has broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not recreate a third-party KYRO driver file that was never part of the Windows component store. Use them when other Windows features or system files are also malfunctioning, not as the primary repair for pmxprop.dll.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully and SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem is probably not a damaged Windows component.
If SFC cannot repair some files, restart and run the commands again. Persistent Windows corruption may require Windows repair or recovery procedures, but those steps still will not supply a missing KYRO driver.
Repeating system scans without knowing whether the affected file belongs to Windows can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the KYRO package when that package is the actual source of pmxprop.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore when the timing fits
System Restore is relevant when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, or hardware change and an appropriate restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back drivers and software changes. It does not guarantee that a third-party DLL will be restored, and it should not be used to recover a file that antivirus identified as malware. If the error appeared after a failed driver installation, reinstalling the complete driver is usually more precise.

Should you copy pmxprop.dll to System32 or SysWOW64?
No, not as a first-line repair.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is the 64-bit system directory.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system components.
Those names are confusing, but neither directory is a general-purpose storage location for third-party DLLs. The correct historical location for pmxprop.dll may have been inside the KYRO driver directory or another graphics-driver directory. The application folder may also be wrong.
Copying a DLL can cause:
- A version mismatch with the other KYRO files.
- Missing dependencies.
- Incorrect permissions.
- An invalid or missing registration entry.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch.
- Malware exposure.
If a complete, verified installer places the file in a particular directory, let that installer do the work. Do not overwrite an existing file unless the package documentation or installer requires it.
Should you run regsvr32 pmxprop.dll?
Not routinely.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points. A file described as a shell extension may have been registered by its original installer, but that does not prove that every pmxprop.dll build exports DllRegisterServer.
If the original KYRO installer documentation specifically requires registration, use the command from that documentation and match the command’s architecture to the DLL. Otherwise, do not treat registration as a generic repair step.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For example, if an administrator has verified that registration is appropriate and the DLL is in the current directory, the command would be:
regsvr32 pmxprop.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration tool is located at:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe
The 64-bit tool is located at:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe
Using the wrong tool can produce architecture errors. If Windows reports “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found,” manual registration does not apply to that copy. Reinstall the complete driver or remove the obsolete reference instead.

If pmxprop.dll exists and you need to determine whether it belongs to the KYRO installation:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description, company, and original filename.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Open the General tab and record the full path.
A file claiming to be pmxprop.dll but located in a temporary folder, browser download directory, or unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny. A valid-looking filename is not proof of safety.
You can also calculate a hash for comparison with a trusted copy:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
certutil -hashfile "C:fullpathpmxprop.dll" SHA256
- Compare the result only with a hash supplied by the original hardware vendor or a trusted archival source.
Do not assume that every KYRO driver revision has the same file version, size, or hash.

Why random DLL downloads are a poor fix
Standalone DLL download sites are risky because the file may be:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Modified or infected.
- From a different KYRO driver revision.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing required companion files.
- Unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher.
- Unable to repair the missing registry or driver configuration.
Even a genuine copy may fail because the underlying problem is a damaged driver package, a missing dependency, an incompatible operating system, or an obsolete startup reference.
The safe source is the original graphics-card manufacturer’s complete driver package or a reputable archive that preserves the full historical installer. Current PowerVR software pages do not necessarily provide a Windows KYRO installer for modern systems, so verify the package carefully before installing it.
If the driver will not install on Windows 10 or 11
Do not keep trying random compatibility settings or isolated DLL replacements.
- Confirm the exact card model in Device Manager.
- Check whether the installer was designed for Windows XP, Windows 2000, or another older release.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Review the available compatibility options.
- If you test compatibility mode, use the Windows version documented for that installer.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Apply the settings and run the installer.
- Restart and check Device Manager.
Compatibility mode cannot provide obsolete kernel drivers or guarantee that a legacy display stack will work. If the card remains unsupported, use the original environment in which the driver was designed to run, or replace the hardware. If the card has already been replaced, remove the old KYRO software and its orphaned references instead.

FAQ
Is pmxprop.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the third-party PowerVR KYRO graphics-driver family and is not expected on a clean modern Windows installation.
Is pmxprop.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the file’s location, publisher, signature, package origin, and security-product result. Do not restore a quarantined copy solely because its name is familiar.
Does the file belong to KYRO II or KYRO II SE?
It belongs to the broader PowerVR KYRO driver family. The exact package and file build depend on the card and driver revision, so install the package matched to the hardware rather than assuming that one copy fits every KYRO model.
Will installing Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
Usually not. pmxprop.dll is a graphics-driver shell-extension component, not an identified Microsoft runtime. Repair those runtimes only when the surrounding error names them separately.
Can I place it in SysWOW64?
Do not use that as a general repair. The file is a legacy 32-bit third-party component, but its correct location and registration belong to the complete KYRO installer.
Why does the error appear during startup when I no longer have a KYRO card?
A stale startup, shell-extension, or driver reference may remain after the hardware was removed. Uninstall the old software, remove hidden KYRO devices, and disable only clearly identified obsolete startup entries.
What if SFC says it cannot find or repair pmxprop.dll?
That is expected if the file is not part of Windows. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not third-party KYRO driver files. Reinstall the complete driver or remove the orphaned reference.
What is the correct final decision?
If KYRO hardware is installed, repair the complete matching driver package. If the hardware is gone, remove the obsolete software and reference. If the old driver cannot work on Windows 10 or Windows 11, use a supported legacy environment or retire the component rather than forcing a standalone DLL into Windows.
