The best Wizard build in Avowed depends on whether you want spells to do most of the work or want to weave them into regular weapon attacks. For a spell-forward character, keep a grimoire in your off hand and choose a weapon that suits your preferred range; for a hybrid, plan around how often you will attack with weapons and what equipment bonuses you give up. There is no single attribute spread or weapon pairing that is best for every character, especially once New Game+ changes how much you can invest.

What makes a Wizard build work in Avowed?

Avowed supports mixed combat rather than requiring a character to use spells exclusively: its official game page describes combining magic with weapons such as swords, guns, shields and bows. A Wizard build is therefore best understood as a combat approach centered on grimoire spells, not a restriction on other equipment.

The grimoire is the key loadout choice because it determines which spells are available. Choose your other weapon around how you intend to use those spells: stay at range and cast often, or use a weapon as a substantial part of your damage rotation. The recommendations below are practical archetypes derived from the game’s flexible combat, not formal class labels.

Which Wizard build should you choose?

Build direction Best fit Loadout priority Main trade-off
Spell-forward Players who want grimoire spells to dominate their combat loop. Keep a grimoire equipped and pair it with a wand or another one-handed weapon. Weapon choice should support your spell-focused range and play rather than displacing the grimoire.
Hybrid Players who want to mix frequent weapon attacks with casting. Keep the grimoire central, then choose a weapon whose range and use suit the attacks you plan to make. Weapon and grimoire choices affect equipment bonuses; some combinations cannot benefit from both items’ rank-up bonuses at once.

Game8’s guide labeled for the 2.0 update recommends wand-and-grimoire or one-handed-weapon-and-grimoire combinations for spellcasting. Treat that as a specific recipe, not proof that either pairing is universally optimal. The game’s official combat description supports choosing among different weapon types, while the equipment guide emphasizes the grimoire’s spell access and the bonuses affected by weapon swaps.

Which weapons and grimoire setup should you use?

Keep a grimoire if spell access is central

Because the grimoire determines your available spell list, it is the natural off-hand choice for a spell-forward Wizard. Select the accompanying weapon based on whether you prefer to keep distance or make regular weapon attacks. A wand-and-grimoire setup is one option in Game8’s 2.0 build outline; a one-handed weapon with a grimoire is another.

Weigh the bonuses before choosing a two-handed weapon

A two-handed weapon may suit a more weapon-forward hybrid, but it changes the equipment bonuses available to you. The equipment guide notes that a two-handed choice cannot combine a grimoire’s rank-up bonus with a quarterstaff’s rank-up bonus simultaneously. Make the choice based on the combat role you want and the bonuses you value, not on weapon type alone.

  • Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities.

Use gear slots to support the build

Game8’s 2.0 guide identifies gloves, rings, amulets and trinkets as slots that can support attributes, Essence or damage. That makes them useful places to tune a character after settling on a grimoire and weapon direction. The indexed guide information does not establish a complete item-by-item acquisition route, so specific gear names and locations are not necessary to choose the build.

How should you prioritize attributes?

Choose attributes according to what is limiting your character rather than copying an unexplained universal score line. If you are dying before you can make use of your spells, Game8’s 2.0 guide suggests investing in Constitution and using Arcane Veil as a defensive option. If survivability is not the problem, prioritize attributes and equipment that support the way you actually fight; the available guide information does not establish a single optimal spread for all Wizards.

Progression changes the decision. The current builds guide notes that New Game+ allows greater attribute investment. A fresh-playthrough setup and a New Game+ version should therefore not be treated as having identical investment limits.

Which abilities should a Wizard take?

Invest toward the abilities that fit your combat loop

Build around abilities that serve the role you chose: spell-forward characters should prioritize access to and use of their intended spells, while hybrids should consider how ability investment complements their weapon attacks. Avoid spending points on a late-tier ability without checking what the tree requires first.

Check prerequisites before committing points

Higher-tier skills require minimum prior investment in their relevant trees, according to the builds guide. Those prerequisite points have an opportunity cost: they are points not spent on another ability you may want sooner. Plan the route to a late-tier ability as well as the ability itself, and compare that cost against the defenses or combat tools you need now.

Use Arcane Veil when survival is the problem

Game8’s 2.0 Wizard outline specifically mentions Arcane Veil for players being killed quickly, alongside Constitution investment. This is a conditional recommendation, not a required ability for every Wizard; use a defensive investment when survivability is holding back your preferred combat loop.

How to adapt the build to your playthrough

  1. Decide how you want to fight. Choose spell-forward casting or a hybrid loop with frequent weapon attacks.
  2. Choose the grimoire and weapon combination. Preserve grimoire access for a spell-centered setup; compare the bonuses and weapon use before switching to a more weapon-forward option.
  3. Set attribute priorities around your bottleneck. Consider Constitution and Arcane Veil if you are dying quickly; otherwise shape investment around your combat plan.
  4. Map ability prerequisites. Check required investment in the relevant tree before pursuing higher-tier skills, and account for the points diverted from other abilities.
  5. Reassess for New Game+. Greater attribute investment is available there, so revisit priorities rather than assuming a fresh-playthrough allocation remains the ceiling.

What version does this guide cover?

Game8 labels its Wizard build guide as updated for 2.0, and the current build source reports verification for the Anniversary Update 2.0 and an update in September 2026. Obsidian’s official game page describes the Anniversary Update as adding New Game+, a new weapon type and other features. The official issue tracker lists both Anniversary Update Patch 2.0 and Patch 2.1, but the available patch information does not establish what 2.1 changed specifically for Wizard abilities, spell damage or balance. Treat 2.0-specific build recommendations as version-labeled guidance, not confirmed Patch 2.1 balance findings.
