This walkthrough covers the Avowed main quest Shadows of the Past: how to reach Naku Kubel in Shatterscarp, work through its three trials, finish the quest, and understand the reward tied to your choices.
How to reach Naku Kubel
Naku Kubel is in Shatterscarp. The route described by Game8’s walkthrough starts from the Shark’s Teeth area: head northwest toward the plaza, then follow the trail to the ruin. Yatzli helps clear the magical barrier at the entrance.
Complete the three trials
Inside Naku Kubel, speak with the figures associated with the trials and follow the quest objectives in order. The quest proceeds from the Trial of Strength to the Trial of Wisdom, then to the third and final trial.
Trial of Strength
Expect successive enemy encounters across multiple areas. Clear each encounter and continue along the quest-marked route through the ruin.

Trial of Wisdom
Follow the objective markers through the trial’s encounters and interactions. The walkthrough does not establish a separate puzzle solution that should override the quest’s on-screen directions.
Final trial
Fight the Ekidan spirits, then interact with the blue device to open the route onward. Continue to the Adra stone and interact with it to reach Sapadal.

Finish the quest and choose an outcome
After escaping Naku Kubel, speak with Ryngrim and Lodwyn, then select what to do with the site: destroy the ruins or sever the Adra. The stated ability reward also depends on whether you accepted Sapadal’s offer earlier in the game.

These reward outcomes are reported by Game8; check the choice text and result in your game version before committing, as the available information does not establish that every version behaves identically. The two decisions lead to distinct narrative outcomes, and neither ability is objectively best for every build.

- Stuck during the Tebaru Sanakis trials: Game8 reported resolving one case by loading a save from before entering Naku Kubel; later saves did not fix that case. Preserve your current save before trying an older one, and treat this as a reported workaround rather than a guaranteed fix. Game8’s bug report
- Stuck around the gatehouse or Thirdborn: An individual reply on the Obsidian forum suggested speaking to the gatehouse guard and then Temertri in Thirdborn. This is a community suggestion, not a confirmed general solution.
- Stuck after speaking with Sapadal: A player described this issue on the Obsidian forum; the report does not establish a fix.
Make sure this is the Avowed quest
Shadows of the Past is also used in unrelated game titles and search results. This guide is specifically for Avowed’s main quest at Naku Kubel, not Rendezvous: Shadows of the Past or Horizon Forbidden West’s differently titled “Shadow from the Past.”
