Avowed’s official gameplay footage shows a vivid fantasy world and flexible first-person combat, but the phrase “new gameplay” can refer to two older milestones: the first gameplay trailer, released June 11, 2023, and an extended breakdown published January 22, 2024. Neither date makes the footage newly released today, and a few community posts are not evidence of broad fan consensus. What the footage does establish is a role-playing game built around mixing weapons, spells, companions and player choice.
Which Avowed gameplay footage is the conversation about?
There are two major official gameplay showcases to distinguish. Xbox Wire’s June 11, 2023 first gameplay trailer introduced the Living Lands and the game’s first-person combat. An extended gameplay breakdown published January 22, 2024 went further into combat flexibility, companions, exploration and role-playing choices.
Without a specific clip or post to identify, “new Avowed gameplay” cannot be pinned to a later release. The available community phrasing—including a Reddit thread titled “New Gameplay Footage Convinced Me”—is anecdotal. It supports saying that particular commenters responded positively, not that fans as a whole agree the game looks spectacular.
What makes the combat footage stand out?
Avowed’s central combat pitch is that players can combine different kinds of attacks in first person rather than commit to a single weapon style. The 2023 trailer showed swords, shields, pistols, spells and dual wielding. The 2024 breakdown emphasized flexible loadouts, skill combinations and the option to respec, giving players room to change their approach.

The extended footage also demonstrated how abilities can work together: freezing an enemy and then shattering it with a charged sword attack, or using a fire ability to pull an enemy into an area-of-effect attack. Those examples help explain why the combat may look spectacular to viewers drawn to visible spell effects and fast shifts between magical and physical attacks. They show the intended range of options, not an independent assessment of how satisfying combat is throughout the game.
What world does Avowed show?
Avowed takes place in the Living Lands, an island in Eora, the setting also associated with Pillars of Eternity. Obsidian’s first trailer described a wild region afflicted by a plague, with distinct ecosystems, unusual plant life and threats including dangerous creatures, undead and Xaurips. The footage’s saturated colors and strange environments are part of that setting; the danger is not limited to its combat encounters.

The January 2024 breakdown called the structure “open-zone.” The comparison offered was to the larger zones in The Outer Worlds, rather than an unqualified promise of one seamless open world. The developers also described multiple ways to approach combat encounters, so exploration and combat are presented as connected choices within those areas.
How do companions and choices fit in?
Companions are presented as more than extra fighters: they have personal motivations and ties to regions, offer context, and assist in battle. In the 2024 footage, Kai was described in a tank role, while Giatta provided healing. Their presence gives players another consideration in a fight alongside weapons and abilities.

Obsidian also framed role-playing around decisions in both major quest outcomes and smaller dialogue interactions. Game director Carrie Patel described the goal as giving players opportunities “to define who they are in this world, how they want to behave – what fantasy, what challenges they want to undertake.” That is the developers’ stated design intention; the footage does not by itself establish how consistently those choices affect the full game.

No. Xbox announced Avowed’s availability on February 18, 2025. Obsidian later announced a PlayStation 5 release for February 17, 2026; the current official Avowed site lists the PS5 release along with New Game Plus, Photo Mode, a new weapon type and other update features. That current listing is distinct from Obsidian’s December 2, 2025 roadmap note, which said an update originally expected in fall would instead arrive around the game’s February release anniversary and named New Game Plus, Photo Mode and a new weapon type among the planned features. The roadmap described plans at that time; the live site now presents those features in its current game information.
Why might viewers disagree about the gameplay?
The footage offers several different things to respond to: brisk combat and loadout flexibility, visible elemental effects, companion abilities, dialogue and consequence systems, and the scale and structure of exploration. Someone drawn to spell-and-weapon combinations may find the showcases exciting, while a viewer looking for a different exploration structure or wanting evidence of deeper consequences may be less persuaded. Those are ways to interpret the material, not measured findings about audience reception or a substitute for a review.
