awiml32.dll Won’t Load: Find the Right Authorware Runtime

Windows may show “The program can’t start because awiml32.dll is missing from your computer” or “This application failed to start because awiml32.dll was not found.” Another common message says, “Error loading awiml32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

The 60-second answer

awiml32.dll is an application file associated with Macromedia Authorware. It is not a Windows system component.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest and most likely fix is to identify the Authorware-based program that is failing, then repair or reinstall that complete application from its original licensed installer or organization-managed deployment. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL, copying it into System32, or running regsvr32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is reported as a 32-bit Win32 component. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Authorware application through WOW64, but replacing it with a 64-bit file is not appropriate.

What installed awiml32.dll

The filename, reported internal description IML, and available installation evidence associate awiml32.dll with Macromedia Authorware and its runtime components.

It may belong to:

  • Authorware authoring software
  • A packaged Authorware course or standalone projector
  • An application that embeds an Authorware runtime
  • An older Authorware Web Player installation or profile/cache

The filename alone cannot identify the exact parent program. Start with the executable shown in the error and the folder from which that executable runs.

Authorware was discontinued, and obtaining a complete legitimate installer can be difficult. If your organization still owns the courseware or application, contact the original publisher, software administrator, or licensing department before searching for replacement files.

Why the error appeared

The most common causes are:

Cause What usually fixes it
Authorware application is damaged Repair or reinstall the complete application
Course projector was copied by itself Restore the entire course folder
Runtime files were removed Restore the original package or reinstall it
Antivirus quarantined the file Check Protection history, then reinstall from trusted media
A dependency of the DLL is missing Repair the parent application and its bundled dependencies
32-bit and 64-bit files were mixed Restore the matching 32-bit runtime
The program is incompatible with modern Windows Use a controlled legacy environment or virtual machine
No one needs the old program Uninstall the orphaned application or startup entry

The problem may also begin after disk cleanup, moving the application, uninstalling Authorware, or copying only an .exe from removable media. These are plausible triggers, but the correct repair still starts with the parent application.

Fix 1: Identify the failing Authorware application

Before changing files, record what Windows is actually trying to launch.

If the error appears in a dialog

  1. Read the title bar of the error window.
  2. Note the application name and the complete message.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  5. Select the Details tab.
  6. Look for the program that appears briefly when you reproduce the error.
  7. Right-click it, if it remains visible, and select Open file location.

If the program closes too quickly, use Windows search for the course name, application name, or executable mentioned in the shortcut.

Check the shortcut target

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
  4. Write down the executable name and folder.
  5. Do not move the executable or rename files yet.

The folder beside the executable is important. Windows normally searches an application’s own directory before system directories, so an application-local copy is more plausible than a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order documentation.

Check whether the file is already present

In File Explorer, search the identified application folder for awiml32.dll.

If it exists:

  • Do not replace it immediately.
  • Note its full path.
  • Check the file’s Properties for available version and signature information.
  • Compare the path with the executable that reports the error.

A file that exists does not prove it is usable. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found awiml32.dll but could not load one of its dependencies.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the definitive fix for a missing or damaged Authorware runtime.

Use the Windows repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Authorware, Authorware Web Player, the course publisher, or the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If there is no Repair option, open Control Panel:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the relevant program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

A successful repair normally restores the runtime beside the program and allows the same shortcut or course to launch without the DLL message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from trusted original media

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Back up saved course data and configuration files, if applicable.
  2. Uninstall only the damaged parent application.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run the original licensed installer as an administrator.
  5. Allow the installer to restore its complete folder structure.
  6. Recreate the shortcut only after installation finishes.
  7. Launch the program from its installed location.

Do not download awiml32.dll separately. A random DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible release, or a modified file. It also leaves the underlying installation incomplete.

If the installer came from an employer, school, or course publisher, request the full deployment package rather than a single DLL. A standalone course may require several files in the same directory.

If the original installer is unavailable

Do not treat a third-party DLL repository as an official source. Ask the original publisher or administrator for:

  • The complete Authorware course distribution
  • The licensed runtime installer
  • The application’s supported operating environment
  • Any required compatibility instructions

Because Authorware is legacy software, a current official installer may no longer be available. If the content is still essential, preserve the original media and test the complete installation in a supported, isolated legacy environment approved by your organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Restore a complete standalone course

Some Authorware content is distributed as a projector or standalone executable. Copying only the .exe to another computer can produce a missing-DLL error.

  1. Locate the original CD, network share, backup, or publisher package.
  2. Copy the entire distribution folder to a local drive.
  3. Preserve all subfolders and filenames.
  4. Do not copy only awiml32.dll.
  5. Run the course from the restored folder.
  6. If the course uses a shortcut, update the shortcut target to the restored executable.

If the complete folder works but a copied executable does not, the original distribution contains supporting runtime files that the executable needs.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove a legacy runtime file, even when the original application was legitimate. Confirm the source before restoring anything.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent quarantined items.
  5. Look for an entry associated with the Authorware installation.
  6. Verify the original file path and the application that used it.
  7. If you are confident it is a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action according to your organization’s security policy.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is awiml32.dll. Reinstalling the parent application from trusted original media is preferable. If security software repeatedly removes the file, contact the security administrator or software publisher rather than disabling protection broadly.

Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency

A DLL error does not always mean the named file itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by awiml32.dll is unavailable.

First, determine whether the file exists in the application folder. If it does, reinstall or repair the parent application instead of copying another version over it.

Also check whether the message includes:

  • “The specified module could not be found”
  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • A separate DLL filename
  • A runtime or side-by-side configuration error

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically. The presence of files such as msvcrt.dll in an old Authorware installation does not establish that a modern Microsoft redistributable is the correct repair. Restore dependencies through the complete application installer unless a documented error identifies a specific required package.

Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for wider corruption

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Macromedia Authorware DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them when you are also seeing Windows instability, damaged built-in applications, update failures, or other system-file problems.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run SFC

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the Authorware application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official procedure is described in Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.

Repeating these commands will not produce awiml32.dll if the Authorware installation is incomplete.

When manually hunting through Windows component repair results is taking longer than the original diagnosis, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its repair action requires the full version. Reinstalling the Authorware application remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Fix 7: Check 32-bit compatibility

awiml32.dll is reported as a 32-bit Win32 file. That is normal for an old Authorware application.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • A 32-bit Authorware executable can run through WOW64.
  • Its supporting DLLs should remain with the 32-bit application.
  • A 64-bit replacement is not a valid substitute.
  • Files from another Authorware or Director release may be incompatible.

Do not move the file to System32 or SysWOW64. System-folder copying can create version conflicts, satisfy one program while breaking another, and increase DLL-loading risk. Microsoft explains these risks in its DLL security guidance.

If you see error 0xc000007b, mixed 32-bit and 64-bit components are one possibility, but that connection is not confirmed specifically for this file. Restore the complete matching application package instead of mixing files manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics or device-driver update is not the normal fix for a missing Authorware DLL. Consider it only if the application launches after the DLL issue is resolved but then crashes with display, audio, or hardware errors.

Check drivers through Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the device category named in the error.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Use the removal option only if your administrator or hardware vendor directs you to do so.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.

Finding the correct legacy driver manually can mean identifying the exact device, Windows build, and hardware revision. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale, while the driver installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for restoring the Authorware runtime when awiml32.dll itself is missing.

Fix 9: Run the application in a controlled legacy environment

If the complete original runtime is restored but the application still will not run, the remaining problem may be compatibility with current Windows or browser technology.

Do not broadly disable Windows security features or use an obsolete browser as a general solution. Instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the content is still needed.
  2. Preserve the original installer and course files.
  3. Ask the publisher or administrator which legacy Windows environment was supported.
  4. Test the application in an isolated virtual machine if your organization permits it.
  5. Keep the environment off sensitive networks unless it is securely managed.
  6. Use the virtual machine only for the required legacy content.

If the content is no longer needed, uninstall the old application instead. An orphaned startup entry or file association can keep producing the error even though nobody uses Authorware anymore.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong

Do not run:

regsvr32 awiml32.dll

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for every DLL. There is no evidence that awiml32.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation describes the command’s registration purpose. If the DLL does not support the required entry point, registration will fail or be irrelevant.

Avoid system-folder and random-download fixes

A matching filename is not enough. Different Authorware installations may contain different builds, and a file copied from another computer may have the wrong dependencies or architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid:

  • DLL download sites websites
  • Copying the file into System32
  • Copying the file into SysWOW64
  • Replacing several DLLs at random
  • Mixing files from different Authorware releases
  • Disabling antivirus protection to make a download work
  • Running registry cleaners
  • Registering the DLL without vendor instructions

The safe sources are the original licensed Authorware installer, the complete course distribution, an organization-managed software package, or the original publisher. If none is available, document the missing source rather than installing an unverified binary.

If the fix fails

Collect these details before escalating the problem:

  1. The complete error text.
  2. The name of the executable shown in the error.
  3. The executable’s full installation path.
  4. Whether awiml32.dll exists in that folder.
  5. Whether the file was quarantined.
  6. The Windows version and system architecture.
  7. Whether the problem began after an uninstall, cleanup, move, or security event.
  8. Whether the complete original application folder is available.
  9. Whether other applications are also failing.

If the file exists, investigate dependencies and compatibility. If it is absent, restore the complete parent application. If nobody needs the program, remove the orphaned application or startup reference instead of rebuilding an obsolete runtime.

FAQ

Is awiml32.dll a Windows file?

No. Available evidence associates it with Macromedia Authorware, not with Windows. Windows repair tools are therefore not the normal source for this DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is awiml32.dll 32-bit?

Reported metadata identifies it as Win32/x86. Keep it with the matching 32-bit Authorware executable. A 64-bit Windows system can still run that application through WOW64.

Should I download awiml32.dll by itself?

No. An isolated download may be malicious, incomplete, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the application. Restore the complete Authorware application or course package instead.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Authorware runtime files are more plausibly loaded from the application’s own directory. System-folder copying can cause conflicts and security problems.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Not automatically. The error may concern the Authorware DLL itself or one of its dependencies. Use the original application installer unless a complete diagnostic identifies a specific runtime requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the module could not be found when the file exists?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible component. Repair the complete application and check the full error details rather than replacing the visible file.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering components, and there is no established evidence that awiml32.dll requires registration.

What if the program is no longer needed?

Uninstall the parent application through Settings → Apps → Installed apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features. Also review the shortcut, startup entry, or file association that continues launching it.
