AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not, by itself, send a stream to YouTube. MediaPackage is an origin-packaging service: an encoder sends it content, and downstream players or CDNs request packaged output from it. YouTube’s documented live workflow is different: an encoder sends video to YouTube’s Live server URL using a YouTube stream key. If YouTube is your only destination, configure a continuously running encoder to publish to YouTube. Add MediaPackage only if you also need its origin and packaging workflow for other delivery destinations.
Choose the right architecture first
There are two separate delivery paths to consider. YouTube’s encoder setup uses YouTube’s own ingest URL and stream key. MediaPackage receives an encoder’s input and provides packaged output for downstream players or CDNs. The AWS and YouTube setup documentation does not establish a MediaPackage playback endpoint as a valid YouTube Live ingest destination.

If you want one encoder to publish to both AWS and YouTube, check that encoder’s supported output configuration and the current AWS integration guidance. The documentation cited here does not verify a particular simultaneous-output setup.
Set up a continuous YouTube stream
1. Decide what you need to deliver
Confirm whether YouTube is the only destination or whether other players or CDNs need MediaPackage output. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, source, and whether you need a backup encoder. Also decide how you will record or archive a continuous broadcast.

2. Check YouTube channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test well before your planned launch.
3. Get YouTube’s ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the current YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, public configuration examples, or repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
The encoder must send to YouTube’s ingest details; a MediaPackage playback endpoint is not a substitute. Follow the current encoder and YouTube settings for the selected ingest protocol and quality. The sources cited for this guide do not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval that fits every stream, so do not copy a guessed one-size-fits-all profile.
4. Keep the encoder and contribution path running
A 24/7 broadcast depends on the source, encoder, and network connection remaining available. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the bitrate being sent. If a backup contribution is active, account for the primary and backup bitrates together when assessing available upload capacity. Test encoder and network recovery rather than assuming a restart will restore the broadcast correctly.

5. Test before leaving it live
- Start the stream early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview and confirm the watch page is accessible.
- Check audio and video continuously during a planned test window.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it.
- Test recovery after planned source, encoder, and network interruptions, and confirm that the stream returns to the expected content.
- Check copyright permissions for every video and audio element you use, and review YouTube’s current rules for reused content and live streaming before broadcasting.
6. Plan recordings and archives separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that a single event lasting longer than 12 hours will be preserved in full. If a complete archive matters for a continuous broadcast, define a separate recording and retention plan and test it.

Create the v2 resources in sequence
AWS’s MediaPackage v2 getting-started workflow creates a channel group, a channel, and an origin endpoint. The encoder sends content to the channel; players or CDNs request output from the endpoint. This is an AWS packaging and delivery leg, not the YouTube ingest handoff.
Select the input type before creating the channel
MediaPackage v2 supports HLS and CMAF input, and the input type cannot be changed after channel creation. AWS documents HLS input as TS streams sent with plain HTTP PUT requests. CMAF input uses the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol. Match the encoder’s output to the chosen input rather than choosing based on the protocol name alone. AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF ingest output group for new MediaLive workflows.

Check regional availability component by component
AWS’s General Reference lists a MediaPackage v1 live endpoint in Mumbai (ap-south-1). That listing does not prove that every MediaPackage v2 capability or companion service is available in Mumbai. Before building the workflow, check current MediaLive, MediaPackage v2, and delivery or CDN availability for each component in the region you intend to use.
Keep each leg explicit
If the design includes both services, plan the MediaPackage path for AWS packaging and distribution, and the YouTube path using YouTube’s own ingest URL and stream key. Verify that your chosen encoder can deliver the outputs your design requires; do not assume a dual-output configuration is supported.
Understand the limits and cost drivers
- YouTube archive behavior: YouTube’s stated automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours; plan separately for longer events.
- MediaPackage time-shift quotas: AWS lists a maximum time-shifted manifest length of 24 hours and maximum content age for time-shifted viewing of 336 hours (14 days). These are MediaPackage quotas, not YouTube event-duration rules.
- AWS bill: There is no defensible flat “India 24/7” figure without the actual design. Model encoder runtime, MediaPackage configuration, bitrate, region, audience and delivery path, recording or storage, and redundancy against current AWS pricing.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the encoder is using the current YouTube Live server URL and matching stream key, and that it is configured for the intended YouTube ingest workflow. Do not enter a MediaPackage playback URL as the YouTube destination. Check the encoder’s output status and the network path.

MediaPackage rejects or does not process encoder input
Confirm that the encoder output matches the channel’s selected input type and its documented requirements. For HLS input, AWS specifies TS streams and plain HTTP PUT requests; for CMAF, it specifies the DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol. If the channel was created with the wrong input type, remember that this setting is immutable; plan a correctly configured channel rather than expecting to switch the existing one.
The broadcast drops or returns incorrectly
Check source stability, encoder status, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the streaming bitrate, with primary and backup bitrates included when both contributions are in use. Exercise failover and recovery during a planned test, then verify the preview and watch page.
The complete long-running broadcast is not archived
Check the event duration. YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish full automatic archiving for longer continuous events. Use and test a separate recording plan if the full program must be retained.

A component is unavailable in the selected region
Verify availability for each service and delivery component in the intended region. The documented Mumbai endpoint reference is for MediaPackage v1 and should not be treated as proof of full MediaPackage v2 workflow availability there.
