A continuously running YouTube stream can use far more data than a small DigitalOcean Droplet’s included outbound transfer allowance. At 10 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 3,018 GiB of video payload before protocol overhead and other traffic. Whether DigitalOcean bills overage depends on the combined allowances and usage of all Droplets in your team—not just the streaming Droplet. Monthly transfer allowances are also separate from a Droplet’s maximum network throughput.
How DigitalOcean Droplet bandwidth limits work
DigitalOcean does not have one monthly transfer limit that applies to every Droplet. Each plan contributes an outbound transfer allowance to a pool shared by the Droplets on the customer’s team. DigitalOcean’s current pricing page lists allowances starting at 500 GiB per month; for example, its listed 1 GiB Basic plan includes 1,000 GiB per month. Check the current Droplet pricing for the plan you intend to use, since offerings can change.
- Outbound transfer allowance: The plan’s contribution to the team’s shared monthly pool.
- Team pool: Allowances and usage are combined across the team’s Droplets. One Droplet can use more than its own allowance if the team’s overall pool has room. Unused transfer does not roll over to another month or transfer between teams.
- Overage: DigitalOcean documents a charge of $0.01 per GiB for Droplet outbound transfer above the team pool.
- What counts: Data sent through a Droplet’s public network interface counts toward the pool, including IPv6 traffic. Traffic between Droplets over the VPC private interface does not use that public-interface transfer allowance. Inbound transfer to Droplets is free.
Use the team’s billing view to check measured usage and projections; DigitalOcean says the view updates daily. The billing rules are described in its bandwidth billing documentation.
Monthly transfer is not network throughput
A monthly transfer allowance measures cumulative data over a billing period. Throughput is the rate at which a Droplet can send or receive data at a moment in time. DigitalOcean’s limits documentation lists maximum network rates of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets, 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets, and 10 Gbps over public connections for GPU Droplets (25 Gbps over VPC). Traffic above applicable throughput limits may be rate limited. These ceilings are not monthly quotas; see DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits for current details.

Estimate the outbound transfer for a continuous stream
Estimate video payload with this formula, using decimal megabits per second and binary gibibytes:
outbound GiB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,073,741,824

At continuous operation for 30 days, 1 Mbps works out to about 302 GiB and 10 Mbps to about 3,018 GiB. These are arithmetic estimates, not DigitalOcean usage guarantees. Actual metered transfer can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, stream configuration, backup encoders, and other outbound work from the Droplet or team.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for a realistic bitrate
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For network capacity, YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” That headroom is an upload-capacity recommendation, not an extra DigitalOcean monthly allowance. If primary and backup streams are sent simultaneously, include both streams’ bitrates when estimating transfer and checking available outbound capacity. Consult YouTube’s streaming tips.
Worked example: a 10 Mbps stream for 30 days
A single 10 Mbps H.264 stream sent continuously for 30 days represents approximately 3,018 GiB of video payload. This exceeds a 500 GiB allowance considered by itself, but it does not establish the actual bill: the streaming Droplet’s usage is combined with every Droplet’s allowance and usage in the team pool.

For illustration only, if the entire team pool were exactly 500 GiB and the only counted transfer were this stream, the estimated excess would be 2,518 GiB. At DigitalOcean’s documented $0.01 per GiB overage rate, that arithmetic produces $25.18. It is not a quoted bill or a prediction for a team with other Droplets, traffic, or metered-transfer differences.
Check these factors before running the stream
- Droplet plan: Record the plan’s current monthly transfer contribution, not just its compute specifications.
- Encoder settings: Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your estimate.
- Hours per billing period: A stream that runs part-time uses less payload transfer than the same bitrate running continuously.
- Other public egress: Include traffic from the streaming Droplet and all other team Droplets.
- Simultaneous backup: Count a backup encoder if it sends data at the same time as the primary stream.
- Pool balance and projection: Check the team-level billing view rather than treating the streaming Droplet’s nominal allowance as an isolated quota.
- Throughput and headroom: Confirm the Droplet’s applicable throughput ceiling and leave capacity beyond the combined stream bitrate as YouTube recommends.
Does DigitalOcean have enough bandwidth for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
It can, but the answer depends on the stream’s bitrate and duration, the plan contributions and usage of all Droplets in the team, other public-interface traffic, simultaneous backups, and the Droplet’s throughput limit. The transfer estimate tells you how much data the stream may send; it does not alone determine whether DigitalOcean will charge overage or whether the encoder can sustain the connection.

DigitalOcean’s outbound-transfer billing concerns the stream sent from the Droplet to YouTube. In the ordinary encoder-to-YouTube workflow, YouTube handles delivery to viewers; this is distinct from the Droplet sending a separate copy to each viewer. Verify the architecture if you use an unusual relay or distribution setup.
Check YouTube live eligibility separately
Having enough Droplet transfer and throughput does not guarantee YouTube will accept a live stream. YouTube says live-streaming setup requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Copyright permission and YouTube’s other content policies also remain relevant to the video being streamed. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before configuring an always-on channel.
